Stream of Consciousness: Seattle Sounders at FC Dallas

My ‘not making the trip to Dallas’ streak continues tonight, unfortunately, so I’m watching courtesy of the good folks at ESPN2 (or as I like to call it, “The Dos”). The crowd is so sparse and quiet that I could swear I’m overhearing a private conversation in the stands.

Stream of Consciousness: FC Dallas at New York

10 million people in the New York Metropolitan area, and this brand-spanking new, state-of-the art Red Bull stadium is half full. This makes me want to say bad words. At least the supporters group behind the goal (where a supporters group should be, in my view) is really loud and well-organized. Of course that just reminds me of how much I really miss standing with the Inferno on a regular basis. Standing and singing for 90 minutes is really the only way to watch live soccer.

Stream of Consciousness: Columbus Crew vs FC Dallas

It’s the Sons of Lamar playing tonight. You never know what’s going to happen when FCD and the Crew get together. Last time, it snowed. In Dallas. In the Spring. That was so unlikely it rates just below alien invasion on the ‘Likely to Happen’ scale. It made for some great photos, however. As would an alien invasion, to be fair.

Steam of Consciousness: Houston vs FC Dallas

I wish I was more excited about opening day. It used to be I’d actually be nervous before the home opener; today I took a nap. I didn’t even start writing this until the 23rd minute, because nothing happened to take note of. Except the Inferno are stuck in the corner, like an impertinent child (back when you could stick a kid in the corner without risking arrest and civil action), and there’s a strange row of people with yellow cards next to them, for a reason I can’t really fathom.

Strike One: Artificial Turf
Strike Two: I hate both these teams (soccer hate – not real life, evil, wish-you-would-die hate.)
Strike Three: Dema Kovalenko.

Stream of Consciousness: FC Dallas at Seattle

It’s been such a weird season. For me, too many distractions caused by my old nemesis, “Real Life” to write many columns, or for that matter, to even watch many matches. Of course I kept up with what was going on, but I felt disconnected to the team somehow. We didn’t make it to even one game at Pizza Hut Park this year. Not one.

Steam of Consciousness: Toronto FC vs FC Dallas

Marvell Wynne (Matt Visinsky, 3rd Degree)

Again with the sparse crowd at Pizza Hut Park. It’s so quiet you can hear the hand dryers in the restrooms (this is know as hyperbole, for you literal-minded folks out there). Twenty minutes in to this game and the preceding sentence is the most interesting thing that has occurred to me. The Lovely Cid observes that Marvell Wynne has, in her words, “presence” on the field.

Stream of Consciousness: FC Dallas at Toronto FC

I like the CBC play-by-play man, though I didn’t catch his name. He has that calm, authoritative voice that only the English can pull off just right. If he was calling the live report of the Apocalypse, you’d come away thinking “Eh, it’ll be okay”. Think of him as the Anti-Vitale, and you’ll have it about right. Though to be fair to Dick Vitale, I can’t possibly imagine this guy calling the Duke-Carolina game at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Stream of Consciousness: FC Dallas at NE Revolution

Wow. Five years I’ve been doing this. At first it was just on my own blog called “Footballs Are Round”, which I billed as the “The Finest Soccer Blog in America” (among soccer blogs written at my house).

Stream of Consciousness: Chivas USA vs FC Dallas

El Matador (Maggie Hutchinson, 3rd Degree)

Thank goodness for The Inferno, La Raza, and El Matador, because otherwise that stadium would be deader than fried chicken. Very sparse crowd, which is disappointing considering opening night was a respectable 15,000. It’s so quiet on the East side you can hear Jonathon Bornstein giving the Official a hard time about an offside call. But I can hear the Supporter’s Groups loud and clear.
