Having watched the European Championships over the past week and a half or so I’ve come to the conclusion that there is indeed a God, he has a sense of humor and he isn’t Greek. Four years ago these Gods of anti football had their days in the sun and, against all odds, managed to win the second most important football tournament on the planet. Of course they then started to believe their own hype, actually thought they were a “great” team, got murdered in the confederations cup and failed to make the 2006 world cup.

What's with all the subs?
As a young lad growing up in Europe way back in the day I was a member of my school “soccer” team. I would check the school notice board on the way out on a Friday afternoon checking the line-up for the next morning’s game.

With the Morrow getting the ax, who shouldn't replace him.
Steve Morrow got the ax yesterday and already the vultures are circling, some to pick over the bones of an apparently failed regime and many others to throw their own hat into the ring, the very large ring, of potential successors.

You call that good TV coverage?
Being somewhat familiar with the behind the scenes goings on during a soccer telecast (several years ago, in my home country, I was involved with the televising of soccer games on a regular basis) I have been appalled by the quality, or lack of, of the production of recent FC Dallas games as well as some of the other MLS games.

The death of the target striker.
It is often said that the mark of a good team is to get results when not playing particularly well. For long stretches of all four early season games FC Dallas has been outplayed, that they are now the only unbeaten team left in MLS hopefully adds credence to the old adage about getting points when not at the top of your game.

Decisions.
A world cup winning captain once said that 95% of genius in a truly great soccer player consisted of doing the simple things well. Soccer is the simplest of games made complicated by players and coaches, in fact soccer could well be the simplest game of all, it is certainly a game for players rather than coaches.

One of the strangest thing I have ever seen in soccer happened at PHP.
I have witnessed, over many years, some strange happenings at soccer stadiums around the world and last night’s attack on the referee ranked right up there. So exactly who’s fault is it that referees seem to be more and more abused both verbally, and at last nights game, physically, by players and coaches?

David Beckham, live and in person.
Watching this game in person confirmed what I’ve long believed to be true: Soccer is a game best watched live and a 0-0 game is not necessarily without drama, incident and excellent play. |
