Zip It: FC Dallas at New England

Some matches are simply defined by frustration. Epic frustration. Frustration of monumental proportions. FC Dallas’ 1-1 tie with the New England Revolution Saturday night at Gillette Stadium will soon be considered for the Webster’s Dictionary definition of “frustration.” Atiba Harris and Zack Schilawski scored the goals.

Zip It: USOC, FC Dallas at DC United

FC Dallas fell to DC United 4-2 Wednesday night at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC. It was the second time in as many years that FC Dallas has lost a play-in game for the U.S. Open Cup to DC United. DC United scored twice in the first half to take the 2-0 lead into the half on goals from Christian Castillo and Adam Cristman, who would end up hitting the back of the net twice for DC United on the night.

Zip It: Seattle Sounders at FC Dallas

There is no justice in football, so they say. Surely, that’s what Seattle Sounders’ supporters will be yelling to the Soccer Gods and anyone who will listen. And they are probably right, at least for one night. FC Dallas rookie forward Jason Yeisley went down in the box in the 93’ to win a penalty shot that Jeff Cunningham sunk to split the points with Seattle 2-2 Thursday night at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas.

Bouna Coundoul, the Red Bulls goalkeeper, was the butt of jokes across the league after his screamer a week earlier to give up an own goal. But Coundoul was absolutely amazing in the second-half of this match to keep things close for his club. Coundoul’s point-blank save on David Ferreira’s shot near the start of the first half apparently made Coundoul into Superman. Time after time, Coundoul turned back goals. Give the man credit, he was simply great.

Super-sub Eric Avila avoided an obvious handball and added a wonder-strike in extra time to snatch a share of points with Columbus Crew, 2-2, Saturday night at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas.  Avila’s strike provided solace- and perhaps even some justice- for an FC Dallas side that played a nearly perfect first half.

Sports have a way of capturing the minds of people like almost nothing else. We fans experience a season with our beloved favorite team in a way that can best be described as devotion. Our experience is directly tied to the performance of the club. Each year we begin with optimism and end the year worrying about how the next will go. We experience highs and lows, but through it all we live to love our team.

The first match of the year is never going to tell you much about how an entire season will pan out, but there are always hints. Of course, finding the indicators is always easier a number of matches down the road. For instance, last season’s opening night loss to the Chicago Fire displayed glimpses of the poor defense that would haunt Dallas for much of 2009.

Zip It: Schedule Crazy

Pre-season always drives me crazy, but this one has been even tougher than usual for me. This team showed enough the last two months of last season to set up high expectations for 2010. But disappointment and FC Dallas soccer have been virtually synonymous in seasons past, so any positivity seems wisely taken in measured doses, right?

Zip It: It’s a LA Galaxy World

Winters are often dark and lonely places for fans of Major League Soccer. While England is celebrating a full slate of traditional Boxing Day fixtures, most MLS fans are wondering what possible surprises- good and bad- our beloved American clubs will have in store for us in the off-season.

Zip It: FC Dallas at Seattle Sounders

Sometimes miracles don’t happen. The late surge by FC Dallas to secure an incredibly unlikely post-season berth came up short at packed Qwest Field in chilly Seattle as Dallas fell 2-1 to Seattle Sounders FC. Despite a furious late-season push, Dallas entered the match needing a win to secure a place in the post-season. Seattle, already having secured their place, still had final positioning in mind.
