SUPERDRAFT GETS DEFENSIVE AS STANDOUTS CHRIS GBANDI & LEE MORRISON COMMIT TO MLS. Nation’s Top Defenders to Challenge MLS Attackers in 2002; Pair of First Team All-Americans Will Supplement A Draft Pool Loaded With Offensive Talent. Major League Soccer gained commitments from two of the best collegiate defenders in the nation today, as Chris Gbandi and Lee Morrison became the latest college standouts to sign with the League. The announcement, made by the League’s Senior Vice President of Player Personnel Todd Durbin, adds two first team All-Americans to the player pool for Sunday’s MLS SuperDraft in Orlando, Florida. Gbandi (BON-dee), the 2000 Hermann Trophy winner and three-time first team All-American, is a likely first round selection coveted for his physical combination of defensive and offensive skills. As a junior, the Houston, Texas native scored the game-winning goal for Connecticut in the 2000 College Cup Final and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Defender. During his senior season, Gbandi was a candidate for the Hermann Trophy and Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Player of the Year awards. |

Keller stuns Burn with retirement. Dallas Burn midfielder Josh Keller has decided to hang up his boots and retire from professional soccer. Keller, 25, was acquired by the Burn with the fifth pick in the 1st round of the dispersal draft following the contraction of the Tampa Bay Mutiny and the Miami Fusion. He has only been training with Dallas for one week. Keller’s decision to retire is based on personal reasons, as he plans on returning to live in Tampa, Fl. Strangely enough, former Burn defender Eric Dade cited similar “personal reasons” when he announced his decision to retire last Wednesday, rather than play for the Kansas City Wizards. Sources within the organization claim that Jeffries was none too happy with Keller’s decision. Midfielder Justin Evans was released two weeks ago, largely due to the fact that Evans and Keller have similar playing styles, leaving Evans as surplus to requirements. Keller was a strong candidate for the starting defensive midfield position, but his retirement now leaves Jeffries shuffling to reorganize his lineup and roster. from TeamTalk |
