Line Up Shuffle

May 27th, 2010 . 11:55 am . By: Buzz Carrick

We know from one or two reports out of camp this week, and I confirmed it’s under consideration by coach Hyndman, that Jeff Cunningham might be at right mid with Atiba Harris up top this week against Chicago.

Interestingly enough, something similar happened with in Game 2 of the Brimstone Cup last year, which also happened to take place in May.  May 31st to be specific.

Here’s what I wrote about that game on the Brimestone Cup site

Coming off a Thursday game, undefeated Chicago rests some players. Worst record in the league FCD surprises most observers and comes out in a 4-5-1 formation. Cunningham scores off a corner, McCarty’s free kick ends in a Brown own goal, and Cooper scores a pretty free kick goal late in the game. Soumare receives second yellow and is sent off.

So almost exactly one year ago, Hyndman unveiled the 4-5-1 and since Kenny Cooper was still in town he played striker and Jeff Cunningham played right mid. It happened to work. FCD won and went 3-1-2 over their next six to start their turnaround.

Could it happen again?   FCD is a better team now than they were then, the record is certainly better.  Sure, they could use a spark.

It makes me think though, how much has the team really progressed in the last year if the same trick is going to be attempted again?  If this move got the team where it is now, has the team really progressed since then?

Or is this move more about Cunningham than anything else?

Schellas has to do something to get this guy back on track. We need finishing, JC is a bit of a headcase, and help at that position is at least 50 days out.

I’m willing to wait on Cunningham to shoot himself out his slump. Harris, however, spares me to friggin’ death. Every time Avi pulls on the game jersey, I rejoice… until he goes on for JC instead of Harris. The man with his fifteen-foot stride won’t leg out long balls to the by-line, and he does precious little with the ball when is served well.

I’m with you, John. The ball seems to thud off Harris’s feet when he gets a nice pass and bounces right back to the opposition.

I’d actually like to see Avila at left mid, Cunny on the right, and Brek up top with Atiba in a 4-4-2. Then FCD’s numerous crosses could actually result in headers. Dax or Daniel would have to be benched, but I think it’s at least worth a shot if things don’t improve.

Bench Dax. He’s been a turnover machine this season.

Does anybody recall Cunny’s defensive play while playing on the wing? Atrocious. terrible. awful. I hope we have a strong experienced right defender that won’t be tempted to make runs up the field. Oh wait, the right defender is Zach Lloyd who I am happy with so far, but he is not experienced enough to play that spot without cover from his mid. The other option is Heath Pearce who is coming off getting cut by Bradley and has a big tendency to play happy wingback up and down the field.

I think PhilaDallas has a good point. A winger needs to have defensive skills to support the wing back. Harris has that skill, JC…not so much.

I would rather we allow him to shoot his way past the slump. I do like the idea of starting Avila, although he also suffers from not playing the D-side of the ball as well as SH likes, which is why he comes off the bench to lend offensive spark.

At this point, we need Avi’s creativity.

i’m looking forward to seeing Hyndman get sent off again this year! hold his hands with a “3-0″ and get booed off the field. I loved that moment, and made me like the guy!

1 goal from John- header off corner
and 1 goal from Cunny in run of play.

You bench Cunningham for a game, let him get his head back and bring him on in the last 15-20 minutes as a spark.

I think Shea is perfectly capable of playing up top as well as Atiba, they both work hard and have enough pace to get behind, that said I also like them on the wings for the same reasons.

Cunningham should get a break, playing Atiba up top with Shea and Avila on the wings.

I’m also not against giving a another player a start at forward, out of Marosevic, Wiedeman, and Yeisley, one of them has to be training well enough. Start someone else and see if they can finish their chances, the worst is they’ll continue the status quo.

Be Bold! But, shuffle the line-up not the formation:

    Hartman
    Loyd–John–Ugo I.–Pearce
    Hernandez
    Avila–Leyva–David F.–Shea
    Harris

did Kyle Martino hit it right on the head tonight when discussing Jeff C. he said that Cunny needs to get touches and get involved early in the game or else he will mentally “check out” and thats exactly what we’ve seen this season. good analysis that’ll surely be overlooked by most, but hopefully not by Buzz or Jay

the result of the lineup shuffle…big fat FAIL.
ATIBA = fail (unbelievably inconsistent/ poor decision making)
JC = fail (MIA for the past…how many games have we played?)

    other things to consider:
    1. is it just me or did we pass up chances to shoot from the top of the box on several occasions? it seemed like they made the (wrong) decision to make an extra pass instead of firing a shot.
    2. how is it during the closing moments of the game that we were afraid to shoot the ball. instead…we kept passing laterally like we were trying to run out the clock.
    3. i’m down for jason yiesley to start a couple of games ahead of JC for the meantime if you really want to shuffle the lineup
    4. how many times this season have we been screwed out of goals or wins?

I agree 100% with Twotone…and also, the reason JC doesn’t play solid defense on the wing is the exact same thing. He wants to play the striker, and wants nothing of defense. Just watch him when he’s up top. He plays quickly and with skill when he has the ball. When he doesn’t have the ball, he’s just walking around….hardly even a jog.

I love him when he’s on…but I can’t stand laziness…and JC is just plain lazy.
