Steve Purdy Cut by FC Dallas
March 22nd, 2010 . 11:13 am . By: Buzz CarrickAccording to 3rd Degree sources, Steve Purdy has been cut by FC Dallas. Purdy was signed from 1860 Munich last season and won the job of starting center back in the spring. Injured for most of last year and now healthy again Purdy was listed as a trialist by FC Dallas this spring as he competed for one of the last roster spots. Purdy has apparently lost that roster battle and will now be seeking a new club. As a “trialist” there won’t be an official waiver announcement from the club. Why I Think Purdy is Getting a Bit of a Raw DealIn my opinion Purdy is getting kind of a bum deal here. He was FCD’s best defender last year in the spring and won his job outright as a starter. Purdy was injured early last year and then mis-diagnosed which resulted in a in-effective treatment program. After finally getting a second opinion and a new course of treatment late in the season, Purdy recovered and is now fully healthy. Once again this spring Purdy, to my eye, was looking quite strong in training. Purdy’s most direct competition for the last defender spot is Edson Edward. There is no question watching training that Purdy is a far better player than Edward. Based on what I have seen, and admittedly I have seen very few games this spring, Purdy clearly is the better player. So why is he being cut? I think at this point it becomes a question of faith from the coach. Schellas Hyndman loves to talk about trust in players. Last season’s injury riddled season led to some bad performances by Purdy. I think it safe to say the coach’s trust in the player was rattled. That happens in sports, and a coach is certainly entitled to keeping guys he has faith in. I’ve got no problem with that part. But if the coach had lost faith why string Purdy along? Why not just get rid of him at the end of last season so the player could seek work elsewhere? Why invite Purdy to come back and prove himself when it seems there was no hope of reconciliation? Purdy had some interest from teams in MLS but that’s probably dried up now as rosters are close to be set for the season. Purdy will most likely now return to some lower level of Europe to play. Cutting the clearly stronger player to me says the problem with Purdy and Hyndman’s relationship was unreparable. Purdy in a way is now in the same camp as Dave van den Bergh, a player unwanted by the club but not free to look elsewhere. Perhaps the first sign should have come last season when FCD waived Purdy to add Heath Pearce, only to re-sign Purdy when Anthony Wallace was placed on IR with a torn meniscus. 28 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

no biggie.
probably not, but I still think he got hosed.
If I remember correctly, last year, after only a short time with the club, Hyndman said something like he felt he was misled about Purdy’s ability. That’s hard to get over. Pearce is a better back. I don’t know this Edson guy but I’m sorry for Purdy and the FC’s. It would be nice if we could remain as close to 100% American as possible.
I don’t know Buzz, You saw more practices and games than I did, but everything I’ve heard and read from SH is that he really likes Edward better than Purdy. Seems to me that Purdy had a shot to win the spot and Edward simply beat him out.
I can see how you feel that way, but I’d think he’ll be in someone’s camp shortly.
Speaking of those currently not getting minutes, what the hell happened to Kenny Cooper? Doesn’t seem like he can buy minutes right now.
another possible reason for FCD to keep him until now, perhaps they wanted to keep him on the roster IF MLS expanded the size of the roster by a spot or two..
Or, maybe the salary cap increase was bigger than expected, and they want to bring another player in? Edwards is yet another right back, and on the roster we have Loyd, Pierce, Ugo and Wallace who have all shown they can play that spot. The athletic upside for Edwards is there, but I just don’t see how you can add yet another right back to the mix. And Edwards really struggled in the middle of the field.
I would look for Dallas to make two moves – one to pick up a central defender, and another to pick up an attacking player.
Defenders cut in MLS so far, with experience: Vaughn, Talley, Pitch, Troy Roberts. I wouldn’t be surprised to see one of them brought in. Talley and Pitch give the flexibility of backing up Hernandez and central defense, while Vaughn would potentially allow Pierce to move up into the midfield.
I don’t see Pitch coming back. Alexander seems to have clearly won the D-Mid backup role so I don’t think we need to bring in someone with that skillset.
1) I’ve been hosed worse in my career but I don’t have a website to stick up for me. I just moved on.
2) Early last year when Purdy was starting in MLS games, he looked like a stiff to me. So, I was hoping that FCD would be able to replace him. Whether they did that with a better player or not will be determined.
3) It’s a two way street, if Purdy had other options he should have pursued them. After FCD waived him he should have figured out where he stood. Then he came back. He’s not blameless for the situation he ended up in.
About Zach Lloyd being “ready”….you might want to wait a bit, because the jury is still out.
On the plus side, he is aggressive, which bodes well in MLS.
On the negative side, he was often physical to the point of being reckless in the Columbus game, and that worried me a bit, because his inexperience showed.
That being said, he certainly seems to have the tools to be a solid starter, and made one nice recovery slide tackle. The instincts are there, he just needs experience at the professional level. At right back where he played against the Crew, he would be facing guys like Zakawani, and I am not sure he is used to that degree of speed and finesse.
As far as Purdy was concerned, I was nervous for him when he did not play on Saturday, in favor of Edson. That was a tip off for me. For whatever it is worth, Edson looked pretty good.
Buzz,
Have you heard any word about the roster deadline now that the CBA is worked out?
Thanks!
I think it boils down to while he played well in training, by most accounts he struggled in games this spring. He certainly struggled in games last year. So perhaps the coach wanted to give him a chance to prove he could elevate his game skill to match his training skill, and when he didn’t, he was let go. Consider it the bizarro Bobby Rhine.
I wouldn’t say Purdy struggled in any of the preseason games here in Dallas.
As an additional alternative, here is another possibility: It could be that Alexander has shown well enough that Hernandez gets used as our number 4 center back. In which case another central defender is not necessary, and the extra roster spot can be used on an attacking player. I still say that there is no room for Edwards, just oo many players who can handle right back already.
I wish Purdy well and hope things work out for him. Most of us didn’t get to see him play while healthy. A player has a short time to be play, so hopefully he’ll land someplace quickly…
One thing to consider is the competition he faced prior to last season when he “won” a job, FCD did not have Pearce, Davies, Benitez, Ihemelu, and did not know the quality of John as he was a rookie. Now, you can argue Moore/Ihemulu is an even trade, even giving that FCD has added 4 defenders (Pearce, Davies, Benitez, John) since inviting him to be a trialist. Yes Benitez is purely an outside back but that has impact across the back line as Moore was used both outside and inside last year.
I don’t look at it as a raw deal for him at all. He is fit and healthy, he has to compete with the other defenders in camp to make the roster. If he is not good enough to make the roster, he gets cut, what happended last season has nothing to do with it, unfortunately.
[...] [3rd Degree] Not as surprisingly, Steve Purdy was released by Dallas. [...]
we could make list of former players that could win mls cup so purdy is in good company! fcd can’t evaluate talent….
Enough of this “who we let go crap”…when are we going to sign a damn striker (with some size)???
Is it possible that he is a victim of the new “guaranteed contracts” rule? FCD wanting to get rid of a player they might have to pay up for, no matter what, but not sure will stay healthy or play a lot?
Jeesh guys, he is simply a “victim” of not being able to beat out the players in front of him for a roster spot. Plain and simple.
If Cooper isn’t getting any minutes, any chance of getting him back at FCD? I know he doesn’t fit into the speedy attacking players image that SH favors but he’d be the perfect plan B to change things up when needed. I’m very concerned that we’re putting all of our eggs in the Cunningham basket with litereally no back-up high striker (Harris is not a decent option in my opinion). One hamstring pull or loss of form from JC and we’re in trouble. We should use some of the ample allocation money we must have from the draft trade, cap increase and the DVB and Purdy waives to bring in a big hitter quickly

A story on espn soccernet, at the end it discuss the van der berg situation, the author really rags on FCD for the way they have handle VDB
He’s purdy much gone for good I reccon
Bone, It’s wed 5 PM.
Pretty lame article mongoose
“All were scared off by FC Dallas’ outlandish demands.”
Does the author even have any idea what FCD’s demands were? No one else seems to know, so if he does why not enlighten us?
“(MLS claims that van den Bergh was twice offered — once by Dallas and once by Los Angeles — a contract at a reduced wage but that he refused to entertain the offers.)”
So despite FCD’s “outlandish demands” LA still offered VDB a contract? They must have agreed to whatever those demands were.
“Until the players can seek employment without restrictions, they haven’t achieved their goals.”
So why isn’t VDB looking outside MLS – nothing to stop him there..?
Thanks Buzz!
Agree jonesing. It doesn’t seem the author lput any effort into tracking down the facts. Perhaps FCD had outlandish demands, but maybe not. We would need to know what they are to make that determination.
He landed with the Portland Timbers…
