FCD Play-In for US Open Cup

March 4th, 2010 . 11:19 am . By: Buzz Carrick

Is at DC United sometime in April.  FCD lost a who will host coin flip apparently.

TEMPLATE:
Game A (8 v 9/Expansion): New York Red Bulls v Philadelphia Union
Game B (1 v 8): Game A Winner v New England Revolutions
Game C (2 v 7): San Jose Earthquakes v Real Salt Lake
Game D (3 v 6): Kansas City Wizards v Colorado Rapids
Game E (4 v 5): D.C. United v FC Dallas
** Play-in games A–E will be completed by the end of April. Teams will announce the date and times of games in the near future.

Game F: Game B winner v Game D winner
Game G: Game C winner v Game E winner

Winner of Games F and G qualify as the final 2 teams in the 2010 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
**Play-in games F & G by will be completed by the end of May. Teams will announce the date and times of games in the near future.

Side note: Why do some soccer people in the US insist on listing the home team first in domestic matches.  This is not Europe.  In Europe or in European matches screened here, sure go ahea, list those matches home team first.  But here in the US we have this little thing called the “AP Standard” and it says the home team is listed second (or on the bottom if stacked).

Every sport, in every US league, in every news outlet, for eons. Yes, that means MLS and the US Open Cup.

Quit trying to be a Euro poser.   It just confuses people.

i’m just glad those that list the home team first also don’t try to drive on the left side of the road.

That home team first thing is really confusing given the way the present the bracket. It looks like SJ is the 2 seed and RSL is the 7 seed.

Agree 1000%. Don’t even get me started on those jackasses.

    Boo the AP standard!

What does the AP standard say about Tennis and their wacky use of the word “love” instead of zero? AP standard does not apply. The richness of the language of the sport supercedes any old standard set by the AP.

In Soccer, the home team is listed first all around the world. It is part of the culture of the sport, and as such it also should supercede the AP standard.

  5. Comment by Buzz Carrick on March 4, 2010 12:19 PM

Ap standard for zero in tennis is love. That is part of the rules in tennis. Which team is listed firstb is not part of game rules, it is a news standard.

  6. Comment by Chamo Jones on March 4, 2010 12:24 PM

So the solution is clear, the outdated AP standard needs to be updated.

    “New England Revolutions”

    WTF?

“Quit trying to be a Euro poser.”
    Great line.

    This IS America!

  9. Comment by giggshasscored on March 4, 2010 1:19 PM

an alternate solution is Chamo can move to Europe

“It is part of the culture of the sport,”

For a moment I thought you were talking about messing around with your teammates spouse…

  11. Comment by Chamo on March 4, 2010 3:53 PM

Hey Ragnar, Giggs, how do you know that I don’t live there already? ;)

In reality, I pay much more attention to the game played in South America than I do to the Euro game. I will give you three guesses what they do down there.

When is FCD signing that forward? It is sad that a comment the AP way of doing things gets more reaction than anything that the team is doing.

  12. Comment by JPB4 on March 4, 2010 4:21 PM

Agree on the standard, this is the U.S., don’t give non-soccer fans yet another reason to not like the sport or think it’s too confusing. Some screwball might see a USOC schedule and see DCU vs. FC Dallas and show up at PHP and wonder where everyone is!!

Hoping for a good USOC run but this is not the way to start.

FCD needs to have a good season to be in a better qualifying position at the end of the season (for USOC, CCL if possible, etc.).

    Go Toros!

  13. Comment by Chamo on March 4, 2010 4:50 PM

Why cater to somebody that isn’t going to even notice that you are catering to them?

The day a non-soccer fan shows up to a US Open cup game will be the first day it ever happened. Hell, the day more than a thousand soccer fans show up to a Open Cup game at PHP would be a more impressive first.

  14. Comment by Casey on March 4, 2010 5:20 PM

We had more than a thousand at the final awhile back. Not usual, I know, but it’s true! And we lost. =(

  15. Comment by Rich on March 4, 2010 5:36 PM

I agree with Chamo. 100+ years of worldwide soccer tradition > American snobbery. Be consistent with the rest of the soccer world; list home team first.

  16. Comment by Saban on March 4, 2010 9:13 PM

    Rich,

So, you want to use the metric system too?

How about European Socialism & Healthcare? Why don’t you move to Greece, they’re having lots of fun there now. But, at least they list the home team of a match first, so you should be happy – right?

You sound like a sheep not a lion.

Lacrosse and basketball fans are amused by the irony.

  18. Comment by viennacoup on March 4, 2010 11:05 PM

We list the home team second in the US because of baseball…the home team bats last. In soccer, the home team is listed first in virtually every country. Is it too tough to adopt home team first for soccer in the US? I dont think the rest of the world is going to change to accomodate us as far as soccer goes.

  19. Comment by Casey on March 4, 2010 11:05 PM

Hahaha Saban, that was a sad use of logic there.

Use worldwide standards for which team is listed first=

    Wait for it…

    European Socialism & Healthcare.

    Yeouch.
    (Finland rocks btw.)

  20. Comment by Jay Brownlee on March 4, 2010 11:28 PM

When is the last time DC United played an away match in the USOC?

  21. Comment by Saban on March 5, 2010 12:01 AM

    Casey,

You grabbed the part you wanted from my statement and put out a strawman – instead of using correct logic yourself.

The logic of my statement is responding to Rich attacking America as Snobs. Is that so hard to understand?

Let me explain, it works like this:

Rich poses that America is snobs for not following European Soccer tadition. This implies that Rich thinks more highly of Europe than America (at least on this issue). But if you call Americans snobs, you probably think Europe is better than America in other ways as well. Thus, I put out some examples where Europe is hapless, thus indicating that America is true & good.

Was that easy enough for you to follow?

  22. Comment by TheGribbler on March 5, 2010 6:47 AM

Casey you set up your own strawman there.

  23. Comment by JPB4 on March 5, 2010 6:14 PM

Home team is listed second in EVERY U.S. sport, INCLUDING MLS. It is not snobbery, it is adapting how the game is presented in this country.

During the MLS reg. season a game between Houston Dynamo and FC Dallas in Frisco is listed as Houston AT Dallas, not Houston vs. Dallas, the latter being interpreted across the pond the game would be in Houston.

Should MLS start listing games as FC Dallas vs. Houston Dynamo for the 3/27 opener at PHP?!?

  24. Comment by Casey on March 5, 2010 7:53 PM

Haha, you put me in my place! Actually Saban, the quote was “American snobbery”, not all Americans were snobs. You can call this however you like.

“So, you want to use the metric system too?

How about European Socialism & Healthcare? Why don’t you move to Greece, they’re having lots of fun there now. But, at least they list the home team of a match first, so you should be happy – right?

You sound like a sheep not a lion.”

All of that from one comment of “American snobbery”.

What Rich implies is that he likes the method of using the home team first. That’s it. You take from that differently than I take from it, that’s fine.
I can grab the first part of your statement, or the whole thing, and still use the exact same logic I used before.

We can bicker all we want, we don’t need to though. I love America just as much as you do, but we’re not 100% right on everything, and we don’t agree on everything, heh. Kinda why we rock.

    Anywho, agree to disagree.

  25. Comment by Publius Scipio on March 7, 2010 10:53 PM

This explains why, after never missing a game for most of the franchise’s history, I have not attended a game in three years. It is not that a once proud team is now a joke, nor because I no longer feel welcome.

I could not figure out the schedule.

  26. Comment by Rich on March 8, 2010 10:29 AM

Saban – you extrapolated well beyond the boundaries of my comments. This is a soccer forum; please do not complicate it by mixing in political or social comparisons.

There are a great many things at which the USA is better than the rest of the world. Soccer is not one of those…. yet. Like it or not, we are newbies on the soccer stage – especially at the club/league level.

In this case, it is my opinion we should adjust to the world model for soccer and display home team first.

You also mysteriously singled out Europe. I never mentioned one continent over another.

So please, let’s keep this on topic.

  27. Comment by scaryice on March 8, 2010 9:59 PM

Home teams should always be listed first because it simply makes sense. It’s only due to baseball that things are different here. Why should soccer try to copy baseball?
