Blake Wagner to Vancouver

Hyndman has indicated that given the similarities between Wagner and Anthony Wallace, FCD has chosen to stick with Wallace and allowed Wagner to persue other opportunities. Wager has agreed to a one year deal with an option for a second. That’s a smart move on his part given the Whitecaps pending MLS jump. 6 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

Buzz,
Could you explain loan deals, particularly in reference to MLS. Why didn’t FCD loan him to a USL/NASL team rather than give him up for nothing?
Even if he wasn’t in their long-term plans, they could have retained his rights so that they could leave him unprotected in next year’s expansion draft.
Thanks!
I’m pretty sure that when an MLS club loans a player out, they still count against the roster limit of 24 players. Not sure if they count against the salary cap, too. With the limited roster size, can’t blame FCD for giving up on a 23-year old “prospect” that hasn’t shown much in 40 caps since 06.
Unless he made huge leaps forward, no one would pick him in next year’s expansion draft either.
Steve is correct, if you loan a player out he still counts on your cap and/or roster.
They do retain his MLS rights, if Vancouver moves to MLS they will have to give FCD something for him.
“They do retain his MLS rights, if Vancouver moves to MLS they will have to give FCD something for him.”
…which is stupid.
thanks Steve & Buzz – the fact that he would count against their roster is something that needs to be changed.
Good point ms02. Each team should have a few roster spots available to loan players out. That would be ideal for young players.
