Lee Nguyen Interview

November 17th, 2009 . 5:04 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

On This is American Soccer.

He says MLS is a high priority with specific mention of FC Dallas as his first choice.

So you’re in Dallas, the season in Vietnam just ended. What are you doing there and what’s the next step?

I’m supposed to be back in Vietnam in January, but I’m looking at some other options right now. I’m training here with FC Dallas, feeling that out, and we’ll see what happens.

and later…

If it’s your choice, where’s the next destination?

Right now, my choice. Coming back to MLS is not out of the question.

Would Dallas be your first choice?

Of course. It’s home. I know the players and the coach. There’s nothing like coming back home. There’s options in Europe, but at the same time, right now, playing here would be a higher priority for me. Otherwise, I still have the contract to go back to Vietnam, so we’ll see. I had my year and I had my fun, but we’ll see. It works out because MLS draft and rosters doesn’t finish until before my season would start in Vietnam, and the European transfer window falls into that time as well, so all of it will work out before I have to decide what to do. I’ll know before I would have to return to Vietnam, because I wouldn’t have to go back until the end of January. I’m just trying to see what the options are and we’re go from there.

I think Lee Nguyen would be a nice signing.  Does Dallas need him specifically?  Probably not.  Yet Nguyen can play either wide midfield spot, the linking midfield spot of McCarty, or even the high second striker position.  He’s also a fringe National teamer and a young talent with potential.

There is no such thing as to much talent on a roster.

Can play wide, middle, up top. Can take corners.

Some nice highlights from his first CAP:

Sounds great! If he wants to play here, does that help us get around some MLS hurdles, or do we have to make a deal?

Player desire can help yes. So can the Hunts if they play the home market player card. (not a real rule, just for the good of the league owner politics.)

In this case the big hurdle will be the allocation ranking in which FCD is probably 5th or 6th. But that can be overcome.

$100 says Dallas overpays to acquire this kid, and he does nothing but sit on the bench and fill space. He isn’t built to play in MLS.

Hmm… Can he play RM and if so, would he be more effective than Atiba Harris?

You’ve never seen him play Dave. I don’t want your $100, but if Lee signs with FCD or any MLS team he will see plenty of playing time.

Lee is a player that Schellas really wanted coming from HS and really recruited, right? Something tells me that SH will find a way to use him in the team

we’d probably have to trade one of our higher level guys to acquire the slot. you know how it is…gotta give something to get something.

I would like to see Lee play. FCD has a lot of young players and if they figure out how to get them some meaningful playtime (reserve league?) they would be setting the club up for some interesting options in 4-5 yrs. Consider Bruno,Wally,Lambo,Shea,Avila,Davies, etc… will be peaking in 4-5yrs and could form the core of the team.

Dave – how about you donate that money to charity if any of your predictions is wrong. If Dallas doesn’t sign him, you owe $100. If they sign him, you can even define “overpay”, and if they pay less than that number, you pay half to charity. If he appears in, let’s say, half the games he’s available for the first year, you pay the rest.

I wouldn’t mind dumping Marvin Chavez for this guy. That’s probably not a trade.. but I don’t think we’re getting much out of Chavez and this guy would probably be a step up.

Since he is still under contract in Vietnam, could a loan deal be worked out?

    Buzz,

I know this is probably not the best place to post this (can we get a Q&A thread like Ives?) but do you have any details related to why 3 Sr. FCD ticket sales reps have quit over the past three weeks? Doesn’t seem like a good trend and I don’t like getting random calls from people I don’t know saying they are my new contact…guess I was spoiled with consistency.

  14. Comment by Chris on November 18, 2009 12:36 PM

    camel,

still not the best place to discuss this, but…

My ticket rep split near the beginning of last season, and I still haven’t gotten a new one. She was my third in three years.

  15. Comment by Buzz Carrick on November 18, 2009 12:57 PM

Camel, MLS ticket sales has a massive turnover rate. My guess would be end of season performance evaluations.

    But I will ask.

And good idea on a Q&A.

  16. Comment by camel on November 18, 2009 1:13 PM

Thanks for the Q&A…I will think of a few more questions and post them there.

I realize sales is a high turnover industry but according to my very limited understanding two of the three departing sales reps were with the team for over 3 years and I believe these two were the top two sales reps…which means it was probably not based on performance…I was sad to hear about my rep leaving because he had a true passion for the game

  17. Comment by brunomarmos7 on November 19, 2009 11:56 AM

I would easily replace Chavez for Nguyen, easily….

  18. Comment by tyson on November 25, 2009 1:37 PM

Be great he play for FCD, we have fan club to cheer him every game.

  19. Comment by Jeff on November 29, 2009 4:58 PM

I saw Lee play against my old high school once and he definitely stood out then. It’s always good to have hometown players, I hope we get a shot at him.
