Practice Observations: Staying Hot
October 22nd, 2009 . 2:01 pm . By: Buzz Carrick
It’s actually cold today in Frisco, or at least cold to a Texan as the temps are in the 50s. Hyndman cuts short training cause of the chill. He says he’s been coaching so long he’s learned to trust his instincts about weather. Good call I think, training a this time of year isn’t about fitness. So cutting it short is a good idea, it’s not worth the risk of injury. It’s been over a month since the last practice report. A succession of mid week games and work/personal business conspired to keep me from making it to PHP. It’s not worth the time to come up here if they are just going to job and do recovery work. The two Bobbys, Rhine and Hammond, got one of the facilities guys to unlock the little press box on the Dr Pink field. They tried to claim I didn’t have the treehouse password, but I reminded them it was a press box and not a staff box. It was much nicer inside the box than outside on the cold, hard, and wet bleachers. The most shocking part of the day… it’s two days before the biggest game of the year, basically a “win and you’re in situation,” and I’m the only “reporter” here. No TV, no papers, and no internet. News, Notes and Observations- Lee Nguyen is back and training with FCD. SH says Lee is out of contract and is interested in MLS. Bring a local he’s here training with FCD. Hyndman previously said Lee was one they would be keeping an eye on for the future. - Alfonso Montagalvan is still here. If you recall he’s a UCSB grad looking to catch on with a MLS team. I don’t see enough frankly, but it’s good that he is here as FCD needs a couple guys like this to be around. Guys who are close to the level, work hard, push people, and help even up the numbers from time to time. Your Mario Torres types if you will. Your Freddy Garcia Juniors. - Steve Purdy is training, I finally got a chance to catch up with Hyndman and ask about the knee problem I heard about. Turns out after Purdy was re-signed they had a couple different docs look at him and tendonitis is the verdict. It’s just painful and something he’ll have to play through for now. But it’s limited his mobility, and clearly his confidence, all year. - Anthony Wallace is back rehabbing, today he was doing some ball striking and finishing with the trainers. Which I suppose means he’s getting close to return. - Dax McCarty does the early drills up through possession but sits out the full field session. Hyndman says they are being very careful with Dax this week due to the weather, but they fully expect him to play. SH also says the groin problem is no the same area as McCarty’s previous hernia problems. - Daniel Torres also sits out the full session. Not sure what’s wrong with him. - Attitude is great today in the team, almost every single player stays out and does a little extra something. That’s fantastic at this stage of the season. Catching Up with Schellas HyndmanSome of the answers I just put the into the above news and notes. How’s Wallace doing in his recovery, I’m sure he was shattered to miss the Cup?
Buzz’s Coach Speak Translator: Youth has a short memory. Cunningham has been on such a hot streak and streaks do end. Any worry with the misses this last game or is he still the hot guy?
Buzz’s Coach Speak Translator: You can’t stop Jeff Cunningham, you can only hope to contain him. TrainingDrills again start with another kind of long passing drill where the players chase their pass to the next station. One version of this or another is a favorite of the current staff. After that was a 40×40 possession game. McCarty was the neutral player. Green: John, Torres, Chavez, Jair, Ferreira, Harris, Pearce, Cunningham, van den Bergh, Hernandez. After that was a full field walk through, about 70% speed. It’s more of a shape and tactics kind of thing. At this point of the season it’s just system repetition and not really learning anything new. Lineup PredictionIf you can’t predict the lineup by now you haven’t been watching FCD the last two months. If McCarty can’t go, Marvin Chavez is the most likely option even if it’s not his best spot. They are looking to get Chavez on the field more anyway. André Rocha could also factor in that spot.
Thought of the DayThis weekend is the biggest test yet for Hyndman’s new team. As Hyndman said today, “we’ve been trying to develop a culture of winning, but to do that you have to be winning.” Now is when we find out a great deal about the mentality, toughness, and heart of this new side. Is this the side, as he loves to talk about, Hyndman can put his trust in? FCD has been winning of late with four straight victories (and five of six). With crazy scenarios FCD can get in with a tie this weekend, but a 5th straight win makes it much more likely. The last time FCD won five straight was last century, in 1999 FCD won five in a row to close out the regular season (and nine of last eleven in fact). FCD proceeded to make their best playoff run ever. First the Burn knocked off Chicago in the dramatic game three come back before taking LA Galaxy to game three in the West Finals. Hot is hot, if FCD gets in they will scare the pants off someone. Maybe they are hot enough to make a great playoff run. Maybe. Saturday will tell us a lot more. 22 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

Great job as always, Buzz. A real shame that you are the only reporter on the eve of the biggest game of the season. I guess that’s just the way it is in this town.
antisipating the game on saturday more than anything!
hey Buzz – what are the playoff possibilities – are they too numerous to mention? Does TFC really hold the tiebreaker with FCD?
I aske Daniel this weekend why he wasn’t out on the bench this weekend and he said he’s been dragging an injury around for about four months. Didn’t act like he would be headed to the Seattle game either.. Hope all the guys can fully recover. Would really hate to see Dax sit this one out. He’s the midfield glue..
Jim;
TFC holds the tiebreaker in the current 4-way tie, but FCD holds the tiebreaker if it’s just FCD and TFC that are tied. I’ve been wrong before, but I’m fairly sure that’s how it looks.
Jim,
Here’s a lin to a good (buthuge) article for tiebreaker possibilities:
http://www.goal.com/en-us/news...ild-card-tiebreaking-scenarios
However, I’m not sure this article is accurate in head-to-head tiebreakers, as they think it is determined by overall goal diff if head-to-head points are equal, but my interpretation is they go to head-to-head goal diff first. (you can check out the official tiebreaker wording on the MLS playoff stands page)
Under my interpretation:
2-way ties FCD wins:
Chicago-Dallas
Colorado-FC Dallas
FC Dallas-Toronto FC
3-way ties FCD would win:
Chicago-FC Dallas-New England
FC Dallas-D.C. United-Toronto FC
FC Dallas-New England-Toronto FC
4-way ties FCD would win:
Colorado, Real Salt Lake, Dallas, Toronto (Occurs if RSL beat Colorado; Dallas and Toronto draw; and DC and NE lose.)
If there are 2 playoff spots in the balance and mutliple teams are tied, first they determine #7 seed, then they reset and run the tiebreaker considering only the remaining tied clubs for the #8 seed. A Chicago loss tonight would help a lot!
Jim,
Yes they are too numerous to mention (6,561 of them counting tonight’s game), but in a nutshell, win and we have about a 80-90% chance of things going our way, tie and it drops to 20-30%. DC loses and we win, and it’s certain. Toronto winning actually helps us if we land in a 3-way tie with them and DC as we hold the tie-breaker. Same for the Revs, Toronto, and us. GO Toronto!
Not much attention from the media because: 1) This team is off the radar for most major media outlets, 2) The season was so bad in the beginning that any interest was lost from media types, 3) The public speaks to the media thru not showing up to games, and FCD’s attendance has been poor, and 4) it’s just too damn far to drive, just like for the fans.
I would rank tonight’s CUSA-CHI game as “very important” for us. If Chivas USA wins, I could imagine Seattle deciding not to start all their top players, as the Western Division championship will be out of reach.
Jim, as mentioned by others, the possibles are endless.
Great stuff as usual.
Just craziness that Dallas is still in the conversation at this point, let alone the fact they actually have a decent chance.
I’m still not buying Hyndman…but I’ll be much more of a believer if they can pull it out in Seattle.
It’s time to start believing, folks.
It is somewhat surprising that the media hasn’t paid more attention to this incredible FCD turnaround. Right now its the most interesting sports story in the Metroplex. I know that soccer isn’t top of mind for most people….but a good story is a good story. Rangers crashed out, Cowboys are a bit of a mess, Mavs ain’t playing…no reason not to spend some ink or screen time on the Hoops.
Now that CHI has clinched, there are 2 simple scenarios for Dallas to go through.
Dallas wins and:
1 – DC does not win.
2 – COL and NE both fail to win.
But Buzz is correct that there are other complicated scenarios by which Dallas could still make it.
unfortunately if they dont make the playoffs it’s a lot like the Rangers making a meaningless late season run.
In the case of FCD, if they don’t make the playoffs, it is hardly a meaningless run. It is something to build on for next season. This team has come together and is looking to be a strong team next year.
I don’t buy the ‘it’s too far for the media to come’, PHP is only 25 minutes from Downtown, it’s hardly the other end of the country. Even if things don’t go our way this weekend, if we keep this team together next year will be great and FCD has a real chance of being the best performing team in the Metroplex in 2010.
By the way, where’s the best place to watch the game tomorrow? The PHP Open House or is there a pub in town that the majority of fans hit?
If DAL wins, the only way we don’t go through is if we tie at 42 with the following combos:
DAL-DC-TOR-NE
DAL-DC-NE
DAL-DC
If we tie, we have to hope none else gets to 42, but we do hold the tie-breaker on a lot of the possible combos stuck at 40 pts.
English James — come out to the Open House at Pizza Hut Park. You can also watch/support our juniors teams before the big action starts.
They’ll have complimentary food & drinks, too.
English JAMES -
And most of the folks who normally go to the pub are going to PHP instead –
you can make an evening of it, or more -
here’s what’s on tap for your Soccer Saturday afternoon/evening:
4:00 FCDjrs U-16 PHP Field 4
6:00 FCDjrs U-18 PHP Stadium

Just Win Baby!
I’m not driving to another county to watch television.
I’m proposing an alternate location. Trinity Hall maybe, Henk’s Black Forest?
Good on ya barefoot – hope a few folks join you.
P.S. We will be watching a LIVE, in-person, competitive game between the FCD Junior U-18s and Tx Rush at the stadium (with free food and drinks) and then we will be watching FCD on TV – just so you know.
