Cunningham Linked to Reading

October 20th, 2009 . 11:24 am . By: Buzz Carrick

And before you ask, Reading is a football club, not a school program.

As hot as he is it was probably only a matter of time before clubs started sniffing around looking for a bargain goal scorer.

9. Get ready to say goodbye to …
Jeff Cunningham. The striker might be 33, but he is attracting the attention of goal-shy English Championship club Reading, who are interested in acquiring him during the January transfer window.

This had to happen sooner rather than later,  Sixteen goals in 14 games will do that.  This winter we now find out how good a salesman Hyndman is.  Can he convince his newly mature striker to stay while at the same time looking for a new striker of his own?

I guarantee you Hyndman won’t want to go into the season with Jeff Cunningham as his only striker.  Stuff happens and Peri Marosevic isn’t ready to carry the load if something unforeseen were to occur.

If Cunningham can get the money he should take it. I know FCD is going to look for another striker like Buzz said and that has to put pressure on Cunningham.

Is Jeff under contract for next season? If he is that would mean a transfer fee which could be good.

Aged 33?!?! So we’ll get half a season out of him at best!

    No thanks.

What about a loan deal, and Cunningham returns in the summer window?

  4. Comment by Amy on October 20, 2009 12:43 PM

please work on the grammar….there are a lot of words that don’t make sense such as:

“this winter we new find out how good salesman hyndman is” and “peri marosevic isn’t ready to carry the load is something unforeseen were to occur”

the second one i can figure out but what are you trying to say in the first part? lol….

i hope we can keep jeff, he’s a very good asset to the team but….we’ll see

I have been waiting for years for interest from abroad on Jeff. This striker is amazing but for whatever reason was not snapped up overseas… perhaps he LIKES playing in the US and opts for this though I do think he would be an excellent addition to any team. Good luck Jeff… if you want it… take it! You earned it! Just come back when you’re finished! Sometimes… like El Pibe… Valderrama… players actually want to stay in the US and make good money, pay lower taxes (maybe not this year?), and have a safe comfortable lifestyle versus all that comes with playing abroad. He is a father/husband after all. Oh… and he is getting the playing time that is so much desired by talented Americans overseas.

As a FC Dallas and Reading supporter I don’t really think JC would be a good fit with the Royals. Leroy Lita is pretty much a faster, younger JC and he didn’t work out at all, though with Rodgers running the show Lita would have fit better. Maybe that’s the mentality.

Cunningham won’t be transferred to Reading or anywhere in Europe. Period.

  8. Comment by GBBomber on October 20, 2009 1:27 PM

…unless someone actually offers money – in that case, SELL!

  9. Comment by seventhrowscreamer on October 20, 2009 1:34 PM

Hsg will sell any player for a profit.

  10. Comment by Robert on October 20, 2009 2:06 PM

Unfortunately, I agree 100% with seventhrowscreamer about HSG. In fact, I don’t even think that is an opinion open to interpretation. Clark and Dan would sell their grandmother for a transfer fee. (this is playing off the old English football expression that one would rightly “kill their grandmother for three points”).

  11. Comment by Dallas Hammster on October 20, 2009 2:14 PM

Or as they say on Wall Street right here in the USA, HSG will sell their own mothers for a profit.

  12. Comment by Dallas Hammster on October 20, 2009 2:15 PM

But as I said before, come back to me when Reading actually signs a check.

  13. Comment by HammerHead on October 20, 2009 2:30 PM

I wish Jeff all the best of luck and could never begrudge him taking a sweet deal. I hope Schellas is prepared with a replacement and considering how SH has done so far… can we find an SMU striker LOL!

On a purely personal note though (And I hope Jeff reads this) Reading is a horrible part of the southeast of England. I was born in a village near there and never liked it even when going back to visit. It is also the site of the British based TV show The Office! So watch out for Ricky Gervais wannabe’s

If you want to scupper the deal, just send Reading some vid of JC at Toronto.

  15. Comment by Steve on October 20, 2009 2:41 PM

In my opinion all MLS owners should be open selling players. This is a developmental league. The more players use it as a stepping stone to recognizable European clubs, the more players will think they can do the same. Very few players in MLS drive attendance, so you have to just keep cycling through players that fit your system. This drives greater profits for the whole league, which will eventually lead to a higher salary cap, which can lead to the league growing to its full potential. If MLS owners stay as stubborn as some are over selling “stars” the league stagnates at its current level.

  16. Comment by Nathan on October 20, 2009 3:03 PM

That would be good if they actually took the profits and re-invested them. How much is Garber asking for now in terms a franchise fee??? and how has the salary cap increased?? Sorry.. I’m just cynical.

I hope Jeff gets a deal, but I think the majority of the money will be used to line the pockets of the owners and their close circle rather than being re-invested in the club or in new talent.

Right now our biggest spend is on David F @300k. Who incidentally I think is worth every penny of it.

  17. Comment by Moose McDowell on October 20, 2009 3:56 PM

I have to think this isn’t happening, but if they can get 4 mil or so, let him go, then take half of the money and sign a Landin/Montero-type guy for 2 seasons.

  18. Comment by GBBomber on October 20, 2009 4:27 PM

    4 mil? Are you kidding?

    He’s 33 years old.

  19. Comment by seventhrowscreamer on October 20, 2009 4:35 PM

hey Moose, I haven’t looked at the bbc website but 4mill us dollars sounds about 4x more than I’d think they’d spend. I bet they’d offer more like 750-900k U.S.

  20. Comment by baconboy on October 20, 2009 5:38 PM

While I’d hate to see him go, soccer players have a short career and if he can get a big contract at the end of it and he wants to go, then he owes it to his family’s financial future to make the jump.

  21. Comment by rsw73 on October 20, 2009 9:50 PM

I think he’s finally found a spot where he’s thriving. He obviously loves it here. I doubt he’ll go anywhere. Of course, money talks, so anything can happen, but, given his advanced age and shaky reputation around the league, I doubt any suitors will offer a sweet enough deal to pry him out of this excellent situation he’s enjoying here at FCD.

  22. Comment by Ricky Gervais ;-p on October 21, 2009 6:45 AM

Steve you idiot, The Office was set in Slough not Reading.

And for the record, we DON’T want a 33 year old player from the MLS. Crap league where footballers go for a massive payout or to retire. David Beckham obviously being in the first catergory.

Keep him. We don’t want him. He’ll just steal a spot on the bench from a decent player.

  23. Comment by Chad on October 21, 2009 11:17 AM

If the money is right, sell.

Steve, you couldn’t be more right if you tried. This should be a selling league, In fact, I’ve thought for awhile that teams here should be scouting obscure talent from Africa, Eastern Europe, South and Central America, the Caribbean, 17 & 18 year olds. Get them on the cheap, develop them for 2-3 years, then sell them on for 500k or more to Europe or Asia, and turn profits that way.

There is no shame in being a selling league, most small Euro countries are, all of South America is, all of Africa is as well. Make the money and reinvest in the future players.

  24. Comment by seventhrowscreamer on October 21, 2009 12:51 PM

Buzz, did you scoop this? I looked for the story yesterday on other sites and found nothing.

  25. Comment by Moose McDowell on October 21, 2009 4:36 PM

“hey Moose, I haven’t looked at the bbc website but 4mill us dollars sounds about 4x more than I’d think they’d spend. I bet they’d offer more like 750-900k U.S.”

I didn’t read the article (obviously). Not worth the money to let him go at that price.

  26. Comment by Buzz Carrick on October 21, 2009 11:39 PM

Seventh, scoop? no. I just liked to it after I saw it posted on a bulletin board.

[...] You may have noticed the little blurb yesterday linking Reading FC to FCD’s Jeff Cunningham.  These kinds of links pop up all the time in the soccer press.  Sometimes they are real, sometimes it’s one party or another trying to stir the contract pot, occasionally it’s someone taking “I’m going to Greece [for vacation],” and making it a story about said player signing in Greece.  Yes that one really happened.  One of our intrepid contributors caught up with Cunningham.  (Hey, it’s what we do.) A close friend of mine is a soccer journalist that covers Reading FC for one of the local papers and he says he’s not heard anything about it. It aint happening.
Plus, having grown up 15 mins from Reading I konw that JC9 doesn’t want to be moving there. Dreary, cold, expensive and full of chavs. Sat in Big D Jeff
