Hot Rumor: 3 Teams Out of USL
October 6th, 2009 . 1:27 pm . By: Buzz CarrickThe USL isn’t my beat, but today one of my hooked in connections to the USL says three teams are leaving the league: Minnesota Thunder, Miami FC, and Carolina RailHawks. It’s not real clear if the teams are leaving the league on their own or being kicked out, but it does have something to do with the new league ownership I’m told. No word yet on what these three teams will be doing next season. Keep an eye out for some news on this soon from people who cover the USL. Edit: And here’s another story with similar info. 6 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

word on the street is that the number could rise to five after the championships, as montreal and vancouver are with the group of three; only reason they’ve not seen the hammer drop is they’re still playing.
Apparently the Wilmington Hammerheads are out too, although it seems for different reasons: http://www.wect.com/Global/story.asp?S=11265308#
Seems like the USL is trying to commit suicide.
If it’s true, this has to be exactly what MLS hoped for – so they can scoop up these clubs for a PDL system. Why pay for it when someone’s about to put it out on their front lawn for anyone to take?
Moose,
Alternatively, its a great opportunity for MLS to throw a bone at the Players Union during the Collective Bargaining and increase the roster spots. Should be lots of cheap labor out there if the USL goes under.
I’d love to see a MLS Division 2 with small market teams and PDL. But the owners would have to agree to MLS single-entity. Single entity, salary cap and soccer specific stadiums keep MLS from imploding like NASL.
