Diego Gutierrez is the Man

September 22nd, 2009 . 5:33 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

The former Wizard is being inducted into the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame.  Here are a couple snips from the article linked.

Gutierrez, 36, served as the national sports spokesman for “Nothing but Nets”, the United Nations program created to help the malaria problem in Africa.

Gutierrez began doing charity work from the start of his career, but became entrenched in the campaign to prevent malaria when a close friend challenged him to get involved.

Gutierrez said the organization has raised $26 million toward the purchase of net beds that protect African children from the mosquitoes that spread the malaria.

“To save that many lives, you are really making an impact,” Gutierrez said.

This is the kind of wonderful work that has should be applauded.  Full credit and honor to Gutierrez.

By the way I heard about this on Around the Horn on ESPN.  Kevin Blackistone talked about it and the applause was unanimous from the writers.  Glad to see MLS getting much needed publicity.
