Daniel Hernandez Signing Official

September 9th, 2009 . 1:26 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

Daniel Hernandez (Courtesy FCD Communications)As we reported last week, or more specifically as Hernandez blabbed last week and we passed on, FC Dallas has now offically signed ex-SMU and ex-Galaxy/Mutiny/MetroStars/Revs midfielder Daniel Hernandez. Hernandez told season ticket holders last Wednesday that he was signing with the team, so it’s unclear what the hold up was on the deal. Perhaps FCD was trying to land someone else at the last minute (pure speculation… Heath Pearce).

Hernandez will wear #2.

Here’s the press release…

FC DALLAS SIGNS MIDFIELDER/DEFENDER DANIEL HERNANDEZ

FRISCO, TX (Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009) – FC Dallas General Manager Michael Hitchcock today announced that the team has signed midfielder/defender Daniel Hernandez. Hernandez has received his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and is eligible for MLS action.

“I know Daniel Hernandez very well as a player having coached him at SMU,” FC Dallas Head Coach Schellas Hyndman said. “He’s a strong player that will add tremendous experience to our line-up. His time with the Mexican First Division and past success in MLS will help us in our final push for a playoff spot this season and in the future.”

Hernandez began his professional career when he was drafted out of Southern Methodist University by the Los Angeles Galaxy in 1998. He would go on to spend time with the Tampa Bay Mutiny, the New York MetroStars and the New England Revolution for a total of 115 MLS games. He logged four goals and 15 assists over eight years.

The 33-year-old veteran also helped the New England Revolution to successful runs in 2002, 2005 and 2006, when the team won the Eastern Conference Championship and advanced to the MLS Cup Final where Hernandez started all three games.

The midfielder/defender also played for three Mexican First Division teams including Necaxa, Puebla F.C. and Jaguares de Chiapas over five years.

Hernandez grew up in nearby Tyler and attended SMU where he played under FC Dallas Head Coach Schellas Hyndman for three years. While at SMU, Hernandez was First Team All-American as an attacking midfielder.

In another roster move, forward/midfielder Alvaro “Tom” Sanchez was added to the Disabled List with a right ankle injury. Sanchez was signed by FC Dallas on April 3 on loan from AD San Carlos of Costa Rica’s Primera Division. Sanchez appeared in three games for FC Dallas this season.

So…..is Pearce just going to sit out until January? Also, there’s a rumor that DMB is in America, could he be in play as well?

“His time with the Mexican First Division and past success in MLS will help us in our final push for a playoff spot this season . . ..”

What planet is Hitch on!?!?!?!? Does he seriously believe they can win every game from here on out and reach the playoffs?

Our FO must be the most dilusional, naive collection of individuals in professional sports

  5. Comment by twotone on September 9, 2009 2:28 PM

buzz, What position does he play?

  6. Comment by twotone on September 9, 2009 2:29 PM

for FCD this season? my question is more where does he slot into the lineup now?

  7. Comment by Steve on September 9, 2009 2:37 PM

he’s a central defender. According to Ives and the NY fans on his site, Daniel was a good leader and had some bite when he was a Metrostar.

Oops. I thought I was logging on to an FC Dallas website. I must have accidently entered an SMU site. My bad….

  9. Comment by Chamo on September 9, 2009 3:12 PM

Playoffs? Of course the playoffs are still there for the taking. All they have to do is win out the rest of the season. Anything less and they are depending on others.

  10. Comment by Robert on September 9, 2009 3:44 PM

Chamo, the truth is that FCD has to win out AND rely on others. While we are not mathematically eliminated per se, it is crazy for Hitch to mention a “push for the final playoff spot.” He needs to face the sober reality that this team is rebuilding. Period. Certainly if we were to make the playoffs by some miracle we’ll take it, but we are hardly adding Hernandez because he is some lone missing piece in an otherwise championship caliber team! LOL.

  11. Comment by Chase on September 9, 2009 4:27 PM

    Chamo –

Are you as retarded and naive as the people that run this organization? Buzz needs to cut you

  12. Comment by jonesing on September 9, 2009 4:42 PM

Actually, it would be retarded for Hitch to say FCD is out of the playoff race when in fact there is still a remote chance. I certainly would not want my team’s management, coaches or players quitting on the playoffs as long as they have a shot, regardless of how remote that shot is.
Everything the team does and says should be with the intent of making the playoffs. Once they are officially out of the running THEN the rebuilding talk can begin.

I thought he was a bit disappointing when he came back to MLS and played with NE.

As for positioning, he started his career as a defensive midfielder. When he came back with NE, he played defensive mid and central defender.

This essentially gives us cover while Davies is with the U20s. Also allows us to puch Ricchetti back into the midfield if players get healthy. I would expect him to play more central defense than midfield at this point in his carreer, but maybe SH wants his bite in the midfield.

Robert, leave Chamo alone, dipstick!! Danny is a good player and a great guy in the locker room.. I always liked him. Glad to see he’s playing back at home..

  15. Comment by mitch on September 9, 2009 6:06 PM

haha…smu website…yeah, it is feeling like that right now…if he loves smu players so much, why not just pack his bags and move back? when most coaches make the jump from the college game or a lower professional level, they seek the help of others to advise, not recruiting players they had a crush on back in the day. holy crap.

  16. Comment by twotone on September 9, 2009 6:42 PM

maybe he’s just trying to show us all how many players he’s put into the pros at different points in his career. next year, i fully expect to see Luchi Gonzalez and Paulo da Silva in the team and Tim McClements on the bench next to him.

  17. Comment by Chamo on September 9, 2009 9:29 PM

Robert, Chase, it is called sarcasm.

The chances of a team that has won 10 of their last 40 matches winning the next 7 in a row are as Don King used to say “are slim to none, and slim left town”,

you know….the more time i have and this signing sits on my head, I kinda like it. I like that SH is bringing someone with a bite to him that’ll actually commit a hard foul and draw a yellow card. There have been too many games this year where we’ve committed only 6 fouls in the whole match and they were all accidental.

at least he’ll kick the crap out of someone and make the other team think hard about dribbling thru the midfield without his head up. methinks this might be ok if he can get yellows rather than reds.

  20. Comment by Buzz Carrick on September 10, 2009 1:59 AM

Hernandez has mainly played center back in training with FCD, but has made a couple appearances at d-mid as well.

  21. Comment by Nathan on September 10, 2009 7:31 AM

Strike up the SMU marching band!

  22. Comment by utahsfcdfan on September 10, 2009 9:38 AM

Can someone please explain something me? I thought I heard in the begining when FC Dallas hired Hindman that he had NEVER won a title at SMU? So, why are we continuing to recruit players he couldn’t win with in the past? Why don’t we just send out a mass invitation: Hey! if you ever played at SMU under Hindman, come on out to Dallas and we’ll sign ya to the team.

  23. Comment by Steve on September 10, 2009 9:52 AM

Outside of the SMU connection, I kind of like the look of this signing. Assuming the salary cap number is very low, of course. Looks like he adds experience, leadership and bite.

  24. Comment by baconboy on September 10, 2009 10:06 AM

Umm…I think the playoff push that SH is talking about is the NCAA playoffs.

  25. Comment by Robert on September 10, 2009 11:49 AM

I suppose the person calling me a dipstick is using sarcasm too, yes?

Just for the record, I was not denigrating Chamo. I do not attack people (well, other than perhaps Hitchcock, LOL).

I was merely pointing out that winning out the rest of our games was not enough to secure a playoff spot, but that we also needed help from other teams as well.

When you are using sarcasm, try adding a wink emoticon, lest people who do not know you IRL think you are being serious!

To Jonesing…I think there is a difference between a GM saying “we don’t have a chance at the playoffs” (which would not be a good idea), and using language which suggests that the reason for this player addition is to make a push toward the playoffs. Why? Because it is not true, that’s why. The truth is that we have many injured defenders, or defenders who turned out to be a bust (Torres), so Hernandez is a veteran who can hopefully fill a gap.

I do want my FO and coaches to be optimistic and have a winning attitude, but I also want them to tell the truth and be realistic in their statements too, otherwise, they lose credibility. Just my opinion…

  26. Comment by twotone on September 10, 2009 1:39 PM

    Carl Bussey????

  27. Comment by Buzz Carrick on September 10, 2009 1:54 PM

Don’t laugh about that. Bussey came out to training for a couple weeks earlier in the Hyndman era.

  28. Comment by Chad on September 10, 2009 3:16 PM

Let’s get Alan Prampin out of retirement.

  29. Comment by KK on September 10, 2009 5:22 PM

Prampin? Hell, what about Hank Henry?

  30. Comment by twotone on September 10, 2009 9:54 PM

I remember buzz, thats why i brought it up. It was very interesting that he came out there after playing in the Amateur leagues here in Dallas.

Maybe Patrick Shamu will come back too…Kevin Smith and Mike Uremovich, Rodrick Scott, David Doyle, and Terry Woodberry look fit
