The Schellas Moves Scorecard
September 1st, 2009 . 2:49 pm . By: Captain ObviousIf it seems like the biggest change Schellas Hyndman has made since taking the reigns of our fair club last June was the ever-revolving door installed on the locker room, you’re absolutely right. Here is a quick look at the current members of the team so you can keep up at home, divided according to whether or not they came here under Schellas or not. A list of FCD expatriates is also included for posterity’s sake. Schellas’ GuysJair Benitez—Colombian left back looks to be a solid signing after his first five games; is the Forward-thinking defender Schellas wanted on the left Marvin Chavez—Honduran playmaker might make his debut this weekend vs. DC; will he play up top or in Shea’s spot at left mid? Jeff Cunningham—Has been up and down since trade last August; when he’s in a groove, few are better but has been very inconsistent in 2009 Kyle Davies—A great find who will only get better with more experience; it’s a shame he’s leaving for U-20 Worlds in two weeks David Ferreira—Good addition but still needs to produce more in the attack; has been an absolute workhorse this season Bruno Guarda—Former Golden Boy not playing much these days for good reason; looking like Schellas gave up too much to bring him in from Rapids a year ago Atiba Harris—Has been an OK addition; only has one assist in first five games; still not sold that he can make a difference on a consistent basis for this team Ugo Ihemelu—Trade for Drew Moor basically a lateral move at right back; Moor’s offensive numbers actually better than his George John—Rookie season been derailed by injuries; upside includes strong, physical presence club needs in back; he and Davies could be FCD’s center back combo for years to come Peri Marosevic—Still don’t see what Schellas saw in this kid; know he has been hurt and been away with the 20s, but think he and Hitch reached on this pick (like the Cowboys did on Quincy) Steve Purdy—Injured a lot but even when healthy, hasn’t been good; strong preseason was followed by absolute implosions in the back; don’t expect to see him back in 2010 Alvaro Sanchez—Didn’t see enough when healthy but injuries make him a liability; “Tom” likely won’t be back in 2010 either; Schellas all but questioned his toughness when asked about his injury Daniel Torres—Played OK in spells but still a big question mark in the back; a good veteran presence but question whether he will return next year Dave van den bergh—The Flying Dutchman hasn’t produced as many assists as some thought he would but whether on the left or the right, he has been a steady presence; a solid pick up NON-SCHELLAS GUYSCLARKE Ray Burse—Filled in admirably during Sala’s absence; could be leaving after season possibly even to Philadelphia; get feeling Schellas doesn’t trust him at all Dax McCarty—Has blossomed in more central role; still not one of Schellas’ guys and could very well be traded when the next ex-SMU star becomes available Dario Sala—When healthy, veteran ‘keeper has been solid; still far from a difference maker; Schellas really seems to like having him in goal, which bodes well for Super Dario Blake Wagner—Get ready for the Expansion Draft, buddy; got more than a few chances with Bus Driver and never really showed much at all MORROW Eric Avila—Deserves more playing time to blossom; won’t get that under Hyndman; still needs to become better two-way player but hard to improve in that area without playing time Josh Lambo—Schellas clearly not a big fan of his; could go elsewhere in ’10 or could be Sala’s back-up; it all depends on what happens with Burse in the off-season Pablo Ricchetti—Captain seems pretty beaten down these days with how things have gone; could very easily see him leaving after this year Andre Rocha—Assumed role of Golden Boy from Guarda; never going anywhere despite a never-ending string of lackluster performances; would love to see him returned to Brazil COD Brek Shea—Like Avila, needs more playing time to see what he’s got; likely headed elsewhere to get experience; maybe as soon as after U-20 Worlds Anthony Wallace—Mental game has yet to catch up with great physical skills; needs more time to determine if he can be a starter; Schellas seems down on him so he could be gone as well THE DEPARTEDArturo Alvarez—Has shown flashes with Earthquakes but still very inconsistent. Sean Bucknor—Jamaican striker was here and gone in a flash during preseason Kenny Cooper—Moved on to greener pastures in Germany Andrew Daniels—Morrow pick never really showed much in back and retired Duilio Davino—Back in Mexico where he belongs Michael Dello-Russo—Recently landed with USL’s Austin Aztex Drew Moor—Veteran voice and Dallas native will be missed in the room Dominic Oduro—Now in Houston as a role player for Kinnear Aaron Pitchkolan—Solid role player not getting much run in San Jose Bobby Rhine—Made transition from playing to broadcasting Ricardinho—CAP product’s stay here was relatively short Jeff Rowland—Chronic knee injuries derailed developmental career Marcelo Saragosa—Continues sparing people to death with Chivas USA Adrian Serioux—Realizes asking for trade was best decision of his life Victor Sikora—Remember him? Didn’t think so Abe Thompson—Hasn’t done much since summer ’08 trade to Wizards Juan Toja—Not exactly setting Romania on its ear Spencer Wadsworth—Developmental player was bottom-of-roster filler David Wagenfuhr—Now living in Colorado and working in real estate Jamie Watson—Having nice year in USL with Wilmington Chase Wileman—One SMU product who didn’t stick 26 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

“Juan Toja—Not exactly setting Romania on its ear”
And you’ve been keeping up with what’s going on? Just curious.
24 games and 3 goals last season. That’s certainly not setting Romania on it’s ear.
You look at the “Departed” and other than Cooper and Toja, SH got rid of the right players. Moor vs Ugo is yet to be determined.
I think Dax has won his spot with SH and the “ex SMU star” comment is lame.
What is the story with SH and Lambo, your comment is the first I have heard “SH is clearly not a big fan”? Are you expecting playing time? He is young and a keeper, I think he’s the back up next year and starter the followiing. Burse is decent keeper, but Lambo has more potential.
Jamie Watson is also now with the Austin Aztex.
jonesing must be the biggest SH fan ever, you obviously haven’t looked at FCDs record under SH. Seems like Morrow brought in some good players its just that SH doesn’t like them.
It’s not all about goals. He also had 5 assists and the team had 3 coaches. Not to mention and insane owner.
Here are some stats:

P.S. At this point with FCD, I’m happy when a player like Drew leaves, because I do not think they are treated as professionals by this coach.
This might be the most pro-SH thing I have seen on this site. Five solid acquisitions. Dumped much of the dead weight-although somewhat stubbornly-and still need to dump moor. Let two stars get away, but doubt any other MLS coach could have or would have done differently. (Unrelated, but I wish things would have turned different for Wagenfuhr.)
Say what you want about the trades… but I think the fact that sticks out the most is that SH has the vast majority of the roster as “his guys” and the team is still stinking it up… At this point the results are solidly on him, no blaming what he “inherited” at this point…
“You look at the “Departed” and other than Cooper and Toja, SH got rid of the right players.”
Like it took a genius to let go such stars as Davino, Ricardinho, and Spencer Wadsworth. Although letting Wileman go probably was a tough one for him. The exception who proves the rule, I guess.
Does the bus driver get credit for all those retirements, too?
Hey I agree with jones, SH seems to have gotten rid of some dead weight, but he has sucked at bringing good players although I like Benetiz.
As for what marco4 has to say, well ricardinho is playing as a starter in serie b in brasil right now, Davino is old, and from what I here Wadsworth is in Brasil as well, but sweet comment haha you must of played soccer professionally….And one more thing do you realize almost every player on that list received negative criticism, so maybe its time to not look so much at the player but the system or coaching style haha i mean come on it was pretty much stated that every player has some enormous flaw from allowing them to be decent players…if you ever played soccer you would know such a thing, but keep it up lets here your reply
if he gets rid of his younger players especially shea or lambo or dax or even avila he is not the best choice for the team! we should trade him!
no captaincanucky, I am not an SH fan, if you would try reading my posts you might comprehend that I am a FCD fan and I want the team to have a far better season next year. I realize two things are NOT going to change between now and then – HSG will still own the team and SH will still be the coach.
Given those two facts, we need to change out some of the roster that has failed the past two seasons. I hate to see Moor go, but I realized it was done in the best interest of improving the team. I hope it works out for FCD and Drew.
Re: Shea – his leaving won’t be due to SH not wanting him. I expect the money from Europe will be to good to pass up.
What about Denilson, no love?
Buzz–
With 2 first rounders, you gotta think we’ll get a good young forward with one of those picks right? Maybe redeem themselves a little from the Peri pick last year
Heath Pearce to Turkey per Goff..
Time is running out for the top allocation spot.
I think this is more evidence, to me, that Morrow wasn’t a very good manager of the club. Most of the guys on the drop list were Morrow acquisitions or draftees. Picking Lambo while we had Burse and Sala, with a first round pick, on a team that clearly needed help now, was idiotic.
I think Lambo was a good pickup especially given his GA status. However we should have traded aways Burse for a player in a position we really need. Maybe Sala’s injuries have been the reason for keeping Burse.
Not a knock on Burse, who will make a decent MLS keeper with more time, but Lambo should be our future keeper (if we can keep him away from European clubs).
You have to remember two things:
1) Supposedly with Morrow & Hitchcock the decision was made to go young. In that case Lambo and all the G.A. players makes perfect sense.
2) MLS used to have a 28 man roster, a devlopmental squad, and developmental games. Thus again, Lambo and the rest of the G.A. players made sense.
I was distressed when we chose Peri Marosevic this year. Too high a percentage of our roster was G.A. and other young players (at the time the pick was made). To me FCD went with Peri because he was G.A. and thus cheap. Even if he becomes all that FCD envisoned when they chose him, it was a mistake for a team that was supposed to win this year.
I predict they’ll draft and keep as many G.A. players as they can in the future, because they’re cheap.
Fixed your post:
I predict they’ll draft and keep as many G.A. players as they can in the future, because they’re free (to HSG).
Victor Sikora is actually doing decently well with Perth Glory in the A-League. Not exactly tearing it up, but is fitting in well with them.
At the FCD Season ticket holder event tonight Daniel Hernandez introduced himself to the crowd as a new acquisition. Any confirmation? Hasn’t he being doing really well in Mexico?
I say that if Schellas’ guys haven’t made the playoffs after… Say… Five seasons then we should think about getting a new coach.
I do notice that two players traded this year received red cards for unforgivable things. I will give Schellas a small bit of credit if he instantly rejects any player that can’t keep his head.
Camel, it’s possible if they put Sanchez on IR.
Daniel Hernandez. One more SMU guy!
