The Diamond Four

August 26th, 2009 . 12:28 am . By: Buzz Carrick

The Guardian has an excellent article about coach Hyndman’s favorite formation. It’s in their “the Question” series in their sports blog.

The Question: Is the midfield diamond here to stay and how do you counter it? by Jonathan Wilson breaks down the diamond four currently being played by Chelsea (and Inter) and goes through some history of the formation.

Word of caution, if you’re not fairly advanced in tactical minutia you may get a bit lost in the various midfield four formations. But it is an excellent breakdown.

I’m still not sure the diamond four is a viable formation for FCD as neither Pablo Ricchetti nor Dax McCarty has the Ricardo Clark stuff that the shape needs. I’m much more a fan of a flat four myself, but I can think of several shapes that would benefit this taem more than a diamond would. That however is another article.

Thanks to David Whidden for the head up about the article.

I agree the diamond does not suit their abilities.
