Wow
the SH comment in the Steve Hunt article seems to sum up problem – no one is willing to take responsibility for the teams performance
“Hyndman admits attitude and team chemistry have both been issues since his hiring last June.
“It’s been a recurring theme since I’ve been here and it comes down to leadership,” he said. “I think the leadership from the coaches, we’re doing everything we can. I don’t know if we’re getting it from the players and it might be the selection of players.”
If they were winnning it wouldn’t be an issue. The coach also needs to have an environment that supports someone as a team leader. If you constantly undercut your players there is a sense of fear/uncertainty among the players. Would make for a very difficult situation. I like the way SH puts all the blame on the players, again. ‘Since I was hired there has been a lack of leadership’, wonder what that tells us? If they ever start winning lets remember not to give him any credit.
One thing comes to mind; the scene in “The Natural” where the psychologist is talking to the team and Redford rolls his eyes and leaves.
This is what losers do.
Players, and men in general, have egos. When our egos are attacked we either retreat or attack — both are damaging. We have all seen the many ego attacks the coaching staff has performed against many of the players this season. Now, although maybe trying to do the right thing by bringing this guy in, the statements from Hyndman sound to me more like they would be received as, “we thought there was a physical problem with our team, but since that doesn’t seem to be the issue, there must be a mental problem with these players.” BAM!! Another huge attack on their collective egos. Even if the guy they brought in has excellent things to say, the players may have already retreated from the situation to protect themselves from further humiliation. The only way to get things back together is for EVERYONE (including the coach obviously) to take the responsibility to build back the trust, stop attacking, and work together to meet the bigger goal as a team that fights to protect each other, not destroy each other.
Sports psychologists are in general a bunch of shysters. And isn’t part of being a head coach getting the players to be mentally tough?
This is so Mickey Mouse.
Perhaps the team have an issue with the coach and how he handles/treats the player. This aint college any more.
I don’t disagree that a psychologist can help this team, but one needs to look no further than the head coach to see where the problems lie with this team.
If the bus driver is unwillingly to accept the fact that he is just as much at fault for the team’s current condition, then no amount of psychotherapy will help this team right the ship.
I guess SH doesn’t own a mirror!!!
I say pull their scholarships and make em run. When you play UCLA or Notre Dame…oh wait…well i guess you are going to have to treat them like professionals and if responsibility is the theme…usually starts with the coaching staff…
FC DAllas needs something.
