Marvin Chávez Deal Now Official

August 18th, 2009 . 11:47 am . By: Buzz Carrick

FCD wasted little time finalizing the loan deal of Honduran International Marvin Chávez from Marathon of Honduras after telling reporters just yesterday that no signing had taken place.  Hyndman first spotted Chávez while watching ex-FCD’er and SMU alumni Ramon Nunez.  Chávez is a attacking midfielder with some pace that capable of playing wide or centrally.  Chávez has 18 caps for Honduras, four coming in the recent Gold Cup where he wore #10.

FC DALLAS SIGNS HONDURAN INTERNATIONAL MARVIN CHÁVEZ

FRISCO, TX (Tuesday, August 18, 2009) – FC Dallas General Manager Michael Hitchcock today announced that the team has signed Honduran forward/midfielder Marvin Chávez on loan from Club Deportivo Marathon of Honduras’ Primera División. Chávez will officially join the team pending a medical exam and receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P1 work visa.

“Marvin Chávez is a player that adds depth to our attacking options, and I think he’ll be a good fit for our system,” said FC Dallas Head Coach Schellas Hyndman. “He’s a very athletic and versatile player that can play in both the forward and attacking midfield position.”

Chávez, nicknamed “El hijo del viento” (the son of the wind), spent the 2008/2009 season with CD Marathon tallying 11 goals and 11 assists for the Honduran club.  With Marathon, Chávez scored the game-winning goal against D.C. United propelling his team into the Quarterfinal round of the 2008/2009 CONCACAF Champions League tournament.

Before being transferred to Marathon in 2008, the Honduran international spent three seasons with his hometown team Club Deportivo Victoria in which he recorded 23 goals and 17 assists.  While with Victoria, Chávez helped the team to a fourth place finish in the 2006 Copa Interclubes UNCAF tournament, an international club competition between the seven nations of Central America.

The 25-year-old has earned 18 caps with the Honduran national team, making appearances in World Cup qualifying, the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the 2009 UNCAF Nations Cup and various friendlies.  He recorded his first international goal in this year’s UNCAF Nations Cup against El Salvador.

He sounds like a good player and good addition. Hopefully he doesn’t have the same fate that Sikora and Tom Sanchez have had.

I haven’t been happy with Rocha, as he seems to mail it in quite often. Chavez signing may be the end of seeing Rocha get playing time. Hopefully Avila can still get some minutes off the bench and be a part of the team next year

I guess I dont understand how FCD is roster compliant. was someone released or something?

The most amazing part about this whole deal is that Hyndman managed to keep his trap shut… that must have taken real effort on his part.

In the 4-1-4-1, I’m looking forward to Dax, David, & Marvin combining & hoping they zoom through the midifield.

What to do with Shea? He and Jair are working nicely together on the left. Brek’s pace, size & moves are difficult to match up against. I’d like to leave them there.

So, then it becomes, what to do with VDH? Forward instead of JC? Probably not. We know he can play left back, can he play CD or right back? Otherwise Shea will get splinters.

5′5″ . . . he’s the same height as Ferreira. Not that he’s not going to be a good addition, but what’s the average height of the team now? Although, I guess tall defense, short attack, that might work okay . . .

Let’s see, with him, Ferreira – 5′6, and Dax – 5′8 in the middle, we will be dominated in the air, especially in this league where the ball really isn’t kept on the ground in tight spaces.

This team is turning very small…and while speed does kill, I’m not sure how well this team will play in a league dominated by big guys and physical play.

But I have hope. While virtually out of the playoff hunt, this team could have folded and made zero changes. I give them credit for brining in some guys who seem to be turning the team around. I hope this addition will continue to do that!

Bollocks, Cooper was sold opening a roster spot.

He did wear #10 so he must be good . . . HA

    o ya. stupid me.

Denilson wore #10, so dont get too excited. I, for one, am thrilled to see more skill coming into this team. hopefully, we’ll see something more like Columbus or Seattle that plays fast and moves the ball. we still dont have much bite in the middle. Has there ever been a team that hasnt committed a foul in a game? we might be the first.

Just FYI, I mentioned the number he wore in case anyone happened to go back and look for him in highlights or recalls seeing them play.

I’m worried about our collective lack of height, too. Imagine this for an example of an ultra-small lineup:

    Sala
    Moor – Richetti – Davies – Benitez
    McCarty
    Chavez Avila
    Ferreira
    Marosevic Cunningham

That’s probably the shortest lineup we could possibly field. No one over six feet tall. The midfielders are all 5′5″ – 5′7″. The strikers are 5′7″ and 5′9″.

I’m worried about all of the young talent we have that aren’t consistently seeing the pitch. Though, I do like the moves; it shows that management hasn’t completely thrown in the towel. It just seems like we should be doing more with our U20 lite squad.

Wow, another midfielder, soon we can play a 0-10-0

  15. Comment by Harlan on August 20, 2009 11:00 AM

The FCD Blog is reporting him as a “Forward/Midfielder”….so maybe he’s intended to be a replacement for Cooper as a forward. I really doubt that SH plans to use Peri as a starter, at least not yet.

My expectation is they will look for him to fill the second withdrawn forward/attacking mid role that was created for, then vacated by, Alvaro Sanchez.

  17. Comment by jonesing on August 20, 2009 12:11 PM

yup, FCD was looking for a scoring option and could not get a striker so they went with the next best option, a scoring, attacking mid that can play as a withdrawn forward.

You people get too wrapped up in labeling players to one of 3 spots – forward, mid, defender. Fact is Chavez is an attacking player. That is a big need for FCD

Interesting info from Goff on Setzela. He was left off the 18 the past couple of DCU games:

*On Danny Szetela’s absence: “It was a coach’s choice.”

*On Szetela’s fitness: “We made him work hard while we were gone, so today he was a bit sore. We will see how he responds.”

*Szetela, on being left home: “A little bit [surprised]. I talked to Coach about it. There were a few personal things that came up and it’s important for me right now to get my fitness up and be ready for these games.”

*Can you expand on the “personal things”? “It’s more just between the team. I’d rather keep it between the team.”

hmmm, perhaps FCD was wise in passing on him…

Is this a loan until the end of the season, or is it until the end of next year? Any idea on the option to buy price? (Presumably there is one, given it’s MLS).

  20. Comment by Buzz Carrick on August 22, 2009 2:29 PM

It’s been reported as a year and half loan with an option to buy.
