Now What?
July 31st, 2009 . 12:15 pm . By: Buzz CarrickWhat will FCD do to fill the Cooper void. FC Dallas coaches, being aware Cooper was up for bid again, spent some time, while Cooper was away during the Gold Cup, scouting strikers, watching video, and even contacting people. When the offers were rejected, according to our sources, they had stopped looking for high level top tier talent (read money). As late as Thursday morning, FCD had run a 11v11 scrimmage in training with Cooper in the starting XI. 3rd Degree had run our Cooper offers rejected story on Wednesday. Apparently late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning something changed. On Wednesday we had mentioned it wasn’t totally clear who rejected the various offers and that Cooper’s people were as much involved in that as anyone. Perhaps mostly on the 10% portion of the transfer fee that goes to the player that MLS likes to retain. It now appears that increased personal terms from 1860 to Cooper to make up the 10% may have broken this thing loose. Suffice it to say that the FCD staff, our sources tell us, were as caught by surprise this morning as anyone. Hopefully the scouting they were doing over the last two weeks will suffice. The Hunts will pocket most of the $3 million in cash (the number most often being put about in German reports). But FCD will get a percentage of it for the transfer of a new player. If that $3 million is to be believed FCD should get somewhere around $1 million to spend. Goff backs that up, FYI, he even says FCD could get more money based on how Cooper does. At this point FCD has 14 days left in the window to transfer a player (window closes on August 14th), but can also sign anyone that is out of contract during that window until the roster freeze date on September 15th. As long as they can fit said player under the cap. I don’t know they exact cap situation, but I don’t believe there isn’t enough for a max player. FCD can however use that $1 million to buy down the contract number of whatever player they can find. FCD also has other allocation money at their disposal, including, but not limited to, the #1 returning player allocation. Will the Hunts go the DP route? Will they use their own money to pay above a max salary of roughly $400,000? Will the go max salary route and just buy that number down? Will they need to use some of the $1 million for a transfer or is there someone out there who is free? 12 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

Lots of good questions. To me they shouldn’t do anything to address this year alone.
Whatever decision they make should be to enable putting the best team on the field next year & beyond.
Of course, I don’t know what that is!
any chance that now, with the Cooper transfer fee monies, they go back to some of these “top tier talent” they had previously been rejected by and make better offers?
Any idea who these players are?
The Hunt boys spend some of their own money? Pah, I’m not sure I’ll even believe it if I see it.
Jones, no idea.
Rex, I don’t see it happening either.
Just wondering, I know it is hard to account for it in this manner, but what did FCD get with their portion of the Toja transfer fee? Seems like it may have been a bag of bubblegum and a shiny piece of metal.
Buzz, any chance Cooper plays tomorrow?
I doubt the Hunts will spend the money.
Maybe they’ll sign Jimmy Buffet at striker. He’s a big draw at PHP, and I hear he’s just “wasting away” at his current club, which I believe is called FC Margaritaville.
You know what the frustrating thing about this to me is, the Hunts win here. So once again, they get to pat each other on the back, say job well done and count their cash prize, despite being completely inept at running a pro franchise. Unbelievable! The sun really does shine on a dog’s ass occasionally.
T, none.
JL, point taken!
If you’re a Full Season STH he’ll be available to talk to before the game for about half an hour. He’s not playing.
