Cooper Sold to 1860 Munich

July 31st, 2009 . 9:55 am . By: Buzz Carrick

FC Dallas has announced this morning that Kenny Cooper has been sold to German 2nd Division side 1860 Munich.  As we reported two days ago the latest offers from 1860 and Bristol City for Cooper had been rejected.  Clearly something has changed and we’ll endeavor to learn what that was.  Some German press has mentioned a fee of $3millon, but no one on this side of the pond has confirmed that number.

Perhaps it can be conjectured that our sources achieved their goal in leaking the not-sold information on Wednesday.  One side in this showdown obviously blinked.  Did 1860 up their offer to FCD or to Cooper?  Did Cooper of FCD accept a previous offer?

Any prospects for the 2009 MLS season have to now be considered truly gone as the departure of the teams best player has FCD is left with out an effective goal scorer.  The only player player left in the squad to score on any reliable level is Jeff Cunningham and he last scored more than ten goals in 2006.

FCD will have to move fast to find a replacement for Cooper as the transfer window closes in 14 days.  One wonders if The FCD staff has been scouting players in anticipation of this move.

Here’s the press release.

FC DALLAS TRANSFERS KENNY COOPER TO TSV 1860 MUNICH

FRISCO, Texas (Friday, July 31, 2009) – FC Dallas announced today that Forward Kenny Cooper has been transferred to TSV 1860 Munich of the 2. Bundesliga pending a medical examination. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not announced.

“Kenny has been an outstanding player for us over the last four seasons as well as a tremendous ambassador for FC Dallas in his time with the club, and we wish him the best in Munich,” General Manager Michael Hitchcock said. “Kenny indicated to us that he wanted to return to Europe when his contract expired next year. The timing of this transfer allows Kenny to continue his career overseas while providing our club with valuable resources for new acquisitions.”

Cooper joined FC Dallas on Feb. 6, 2006 from Manchester United. The former MLS All-Star is the second leading goal scorer in club history and was voted the team’s most valuable player in 2008.

“This transfer gives us the resources to continue to build the team and hopefully bring in another talented forward who will be a good fit for our system,” Head Coach Schellas Hyndman said. “I have sincerely enjoyed coaching Kenny in my time with FC Dallas.  He is a good teammate, a skilled goal scorer and a great person. We wish him well.”

TSV 1860 Munich finished 12th in the 2008-09 season in the 2. Bundesliga, the second division of professional soccer in Germany.

“I would like to thank the Hunt family, my teammates and everyone at FC Dallas for everything over the last four years,” Cooper said. “To all of the wonderful fans, thank you so much for your support. I feel so privileged to have had the opportunity to play for my hometown team, in the same city where my father played for 11 years.

“I am very excited and honored to join 1860 Munich. I am hungry and ready to give my all to the club.  I hope I will make Lamar and everyone at FC Dallas proud. I wish everyone the very best.”

Best of luck, Kenny, and congratulations!

I think if Adu wants to come back to MLS we grab him now. Or maybe we make a deal with Houston to get Ngwenya when he comes back.

  3. Comment by Ryan on July 31, 2009 10:05 AM

I’d rather we deal for Oduro. If paird with Jeff up top they could tear apart alot of teams.

  4. Comment by SteveToro on July 31, 2009 10:08 AM

Didn’t we pair Oduro up with Jeff late in games last year?

Glad Kenny will be able to make the move. Hope he can improve enough to start playing regularly for the national team. Or Maybe this will just give Bradley the confidence to start playing him with the ational team.

Congrats Kenny enjoy your time in Germany.

So much for “he’s here to stay and going no where” that 3rd degree has been saying for over a year.

The way SH wants to play we need someone that plays like Ching or McBride. I don’t know who’s like that, that’s available.

I still think Adu is a good alternate option.

Great for Kenny, sad for FCD. Hopefully he gets playing time unlike so many other Americans abroad.

You may want to change the caption under the picture on teh home page. to He’s back and He’ Gone

Maybe now it is time to see what Brek can do, we may be suprised when he gets a full run.

  12. Comment by Buzz Carrick on July 31, 2009 10:27 AM

Scott, one man shop here, I can only work so fast.

  13. Comment by texgator on July 31, 2009 10:33 AM

Freddy Adu is looking better every day. Ugghh.

Good luck, Kenny….if you help get Munich promoted you’ll be a hero. If you simply play well you’ll be bought by a bigger club. Keep your head on straight and do what the manager tells you….if they want you to play, then play big. Stop trying to be the fleet of foot fancy boy, just get stuck in and win some balls.

  14. Comment by Ryan on July 31, 2009 10:41 AM

So does Brek take his spot tomorow? Or do we convert back to 4-1-4-1 and give Avi a run in the middle?

  15. Comment by Buzz Carrick on July 31, 2009 10:45 AM

Tex, Freddy is going to Holland it appears.

Ryan, I would anticipate the 4-1-4-1 with Rocha back in the middle next to Ferreira and Cunningham up top.

  16. Comment by Ryan on July 31, 2009 10:51 AM

Flat out if rocha starts again tomorrow im not renewing my season tickets. Im tired of paying to see a player jog for 70+ while we slip further down the standings.

  17. Comment by saban on July 31, 2009 10:59 AM

So we have lots of chits & nothing to spend them on. In addition to this allocation we have at least 6 draft picks this year.

Why can’t they come up with some good players….

  18. Comment by Robin on July 31, 2009 11:00 AM

    Best of luck to Kenny.
I hope he talked to Josh Wolf before this move…

  19. Comment by historian on July 31, 2009 11:35 AM

Buzz – I’d reconsider trusting those sources if they are going to play games with you and use you to gain a negotiating advantage.

  20. Comment by Aaron on July 31, 2009 11:42 AM

Good luck to Kenny, playing at the Allianz every week should be pretty sweet.

  21. Comment by christian on July 31, 2009 11:47 AM

Thanks for fighting for the shirt every single day Coop and best of luck abroad

  22. Comment by BigBoy on July 31, 2009 11:58 AM

Good for Kenny. No reason he should ride the Titanic Down. Let him go to Germany and develop his game for the nats.

I picture a meeting at FCD HQ something like this today…

    SH: Wow…Kenny is really leaving?
    MH: Yep?
JE: Man…he scored a lot of goals for us, how are we going to replace him?
SH: I guess we should start looking for another forward.
MH: It’s Friday – let’s think about it over the weekend and get back together early next week to discuss options.
SH/JE: Sounds good…see you next week.

  23. Comment by Xanthippas on July 31, 2009 12:06 PM

Well, there goes my last reason to pay any attention to this team

(But I’ll still come read 3rd degree.)

  24. Comment by Buzz Carrick on July 31, 2009 12:20 PM

Historian, I think as of Wednesday my sources were correct, it was a top notch source. I’ve been digging around today and something changed since then. A lot can change in two days during the transfer window. *shrugs*

  25. Comment by texgator on July 31, 2009 1:04 PM

    Buzz,
I’ve heard the Freddy to Holland stuff, but nothing appears to be solidified there. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it not materalize at this point.

  26. Comment by pony2 on July 31, 2009 2:35 PM

nothing to complain about here. KC needs to move on to see if he can improve his game, fcd got something for him. MLS is a seller league and thats what they did. Now who will we get with the resources? I’m sure the FCD guys have been working on this for some time. Lets see what happens.

  27. Comment by Buzz Carrick on July 31, 2009 2:41 PM

Tex, I cant find anyone stateside who says Adu is talking to MLS. Still nothing would shock me at this point.

  28. Comment by Toffee on July 31, 2009 2:47 PM

    Good for Kenny, ’bout time.

Too bad we missed out on Stern John now.

  29. Comment by texgator on July 31, 2009 3:53 PM

    Sign Joe Cooper!!!

  30. Comment by Tony on July 31, 2009 5:11 PM

This is the right move for Kenny.
In all honesty, he should have bailed 2 years ago I think he’d be a much more complete player.
I love to think that the MLS is competitive enough for a guy like KC to grow, but we’re not there yet.

Best of luck Kenny. Bring our hometown some well deserved soccer pride.

  31. Comment by Soccerboy on July 31, 2009 5:29 PM

Good Luck KC. You delivered the goods for FCD…they used you and made a buck on you and screwed the fans again! Now they will take this money and blow it on some “Has Been”.

I can’t wait to see who they come up with? How about getting us Zidane instead of a recycled south american?

  32. Comment by the other alex on July 31, 2009 6:51 PM

texgator: Not a chance in hell that Joe Cooper ever signs for FCD.

  33. Comment by Soccerboy on July 31, 2009 7:14 PM

    Texgator

To sign you must be from south america or central america. How about Jose Coopero?

  34. Comment by the other alex on July 31, 2009 7:59 PM

One thing is certain. FCD will find another “De-Nothing, another Shaky-Slip Up (love that one) and another Traffic Cone to overpay for under-performing. Good luck Kenny thank the lord you are out of this mess.

  35. Comment by Soccerboy on July 31, 2009 9:47 PM

How about another Marcelo “you need to go” so?

  36. Comment by munichlion on August 1, 2009 3:49 AM

Just the facts! 1860 munich is one of the biggest soccer clubs in germany with a fan base around the world. I am sure we got a great player and I hope Kenny will help us to be back in the Bundesliga next year were we belong to. Thank you DFC and for Kenny Welcome in Munich. You will play in front of a average crowd of 30.000 spectators and for a club who specially in Munich is more popular then big Bayern Munich. I wish you all the best and lots of goals. 1860 forever

  37. Comment by Soccerboy on August 1, 2009 11:47 AM

Thanks Munichlion..1860 is a great club with fantastic tradition. Kenny is a great person and will do his best, which is always score goals no matter what level is in.
People in USA are ignorant if they think that Kenny is going to a 2nd Division team!

Bring on the schnitzel, beer and brats!

  38. Comment by JT on August 1, 2009 3:51 PM

Any english language news sites that follow 1860 that I can look at follow KC’s progress.

btw- after tonight fcd is going to shop JC to GB I, he should be worth 2x KC – he scores 3 goals a game!!! hahaha

  44. Comment by Wacko4Burn on August 3, 2009 1:35 PM

KC, thanks for being one of the few pros in the middle of such an amateur organization.

  45. Comment by Carl on August 3, 2009 5:27 PM

    Buzz,

Soccer America’s MLS Confidential is reporting that Cooper was sold for $720,000, considerably lower than the $3 million offer last year. Have you heard any updates on the price tag?

  46. Comment by pony2 on August 4, 2009 7:45 AM

720 sound more realistic, at least fcd got something. It’s still a goo move for both parties

  47. Comment by Buzz Carrick on August 4, 2009 4:46 PM

Carl, my sources in Dallas has said the initial fee is “over 1 million but less than 2″ and could go “up to 3 million” with incentives.
