Cooper Staying

July 29th, 2009 . 1:44 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

According to 3rd Degree sources, Kenny Cooper will be staying with FC Dallas this season and is likely, at least at this point, to play out his current contract at Pizza Hut Park.  There have been two serious bids for Cooper this window; the first, as reported various places, was Bristol City and the second, our sources say, was 1860 Munich.  Both bids have now been rejected and Cooper will not be moving to either team at this time.

It’s not totally clear who rejected the offers, but it appears that Cooper’s people may have been as involved as anyone in deciding Cooper would play out the string with FCD.   Personal contract offer as well as the transfer fee can play a large part in whether a deal is accepted or not.

Come January Cooper will be free to begin negotiations with teams for a free move following the 2010 season.

Probably in the best interests of all involved.

  2. Comment by jonesing on July 29, 2009 2:16 PM

Man, that sucks, I would rather sell Cooper now and get a transfer fee. This season is a loast cause anyhow and we could use the money to help replace him.

  3. Comment by Moose McDowell on July 29, 2009 2:28 PM

Is there anyone on the inside who implied (or flat out said) that his value had diminished?

  4. Comment by the other alex on July 29, 2009 2:29 PM

If Cooper stays until the end of his contract then fcd will get hosed finanicially. I hope Cooper hoses the silly baskets.

    Hi guys

bristol city fan here, is this source decent? We had all been hoping we might sign Cooper. This was fuelled further today when our new squad numbers were released and the 33 shirt was free’d up for no apparent reason?

  6. Comment by Arny on July 29, 2009 2:47 PM

Should make a move to Bristol City.
Good championship club, and if he shows his true worth could end up as a Premiership striker.
Dallas would bank a lot of money if he moved now and also get a decent sell on value

  7. Comment by Buzz Carrick on July 29, 2009 3:02 PM

    moose, no implication of that.

  8. Comment by Buzz Carrick on July 29, 2009 3:09 PM

Jef, all my sources are very good. I don’t post garbage.

  9. Comment by the other alex on July 29, 2009 3:40 PM

When does Bristol Citys season start? Just because Cooper isn’t going this week doesn’t mean he wont go next week.

  10. Comment by Nick Davies on July 29, 2009 3:49 PM

City’s season starts August 8th, they would have wanted him early as possible. The surprise for me is how quiet this has been kept compared to the Cardiff stories last year.

  11. Comment by Rich on July 29, 2009 4:12 PM

Alex, our season begins on Aug 8th.

  12. Comment by rex on July 29, 2009 4:13 PM

He should stay with Dallas and certainly not go to Bristol City. By all accounts they’ll be relegated this season anyway.

  13. Comment by JC on July 29, 2009 4:59 PM

Coop just can’t seem to get any traction in his career. Glad he made the all-Gold Cup team.

  14. Comment by banksy on July 29, 2009 5:37 PM

i can assure you bristol city will not be relegated this season. by the way who are dallas cowboys?

  15. Comment by Rich on July 29, 2009 6:43 PM

Relegated?… must be a gas head. [thats a Bristol Rovers fan for those who don't know] City will be sniffing around the play offs at worst and with Kenny perhaps a little better.

Poor try Rex at putting him off.

  16. Comment by Casey C. on July 29, 2009 6:55 PM

The Cowboys reference is kinda crappy, unless you’re being serious. Apologies if that’s the case.

  17. Comment by Soccerboy on July 29, 2009 8:27 PM

If Kenny Cooper is not the kind of player FC Dallas wants to build around then who the hell is it?

Local kid, coach’s dream, scores goals, face of the franchise, makes off field appearances. lives and dies FC Dallas, National Team Player, first to practice last to leave.

He came to Dallas for nothing. For gosh sakes give the boy what he wants. Or you can give the big money to people like Denilson, Ruiz, Hislop, and any other vagabond.

The only thing lacking in this organization is a soccer person that can make good decisions.

Please give the kid the money! You have wasted so much money and lost so many good players that it is sickening.

Maybe it’s time for new ownership that wants to commit to winning and not being so cheap!

soccboy – coop needs to go to europe. he can always sign with the mls later. i cant see any reason for coop to agree to any contract w/a team at this stage, he is smart to wait till his contract expires and then make his own deal. I would not be surprised if his dad has already worked something out.

  19. Comment by Xanthippas on July 30, 2009 9:07 AM

If I thought we were going to need him for a serious run in the playoffs I’d be happier about this news. At least I can take the personal satisfaction of getting to see him play for us for awhile longer.

  20. Comment by Steve on July 30, 2009 9:07 AM

    Soccerboy –
FCD and MLS can’t and shouldn’t offer him a Designated Player contract, he hasn’t and won’t put butts in the seats. They did offer him the non-DP max of 400k which Kenny shouldn’t and didn’t accept. Pony2’s right, he belongs in Europe.

  21. Comment by Crazy Al on July 30, 2009 11:47 AM

I feel for Kenny. Although he would be technically dropping down a division, the opportunity to play in England and be in a promotion fight would be fabulous. One thing US soccer is missing are the relegation and promotion battles.

Kenny is now stuck. Let’s be honest. FCD is not a playoff team. So for Kenny, it is play out the season. Don’t get injured. Net a few goals. And start working on his transfer in January 2010.

Questions. When is KC actual able to transfer? Is he free to join another team in January, or just begin to negotiate for later date.

  24. Comment by Steve on July 30, 2009 1:25 PM

Pretty sure there’s one more year on his contract past this one.

  25. Comment by edy on July 30, 2009 2:58 PM

Staying in MLS/Dallas eliminates any chance he had of making SA2010. A move to bigger club and actually playing regularly would have made it differicult for BB to leave him behind. I look at Goodson as a model of what to do with a career. He’s at least 50/50 to make the final SA squad after his upcoming move to ??? a much bigger club. He took a lateral move (Norway) and dominated, played great for BB and now he’s about to step into the bigger picture of the international game. I wish the same thing for Coop.

According to german newspapers, KC has signed a two years contract in munich…

  27. Comment by ksmuc on July 31, 2009 4:26 AM

    Hi,

in Germany we currently have plenty of newspapers writing that Cooper is allready on his way to Munich to fix a new contract with Munich 60. Have you heard anything else?

    Greatings from Munich!

  28. Comment by Andy on July 31, 2009 6:47 AM

    Hey everyone,
been following this discussin for quite a while and just today German newspapers announced that KC is about to come to Munich 1860
(f.e. the above posted link, a big Munich newspaper) while the club did not confirm yet. They say that conversation goes pretty well and they expect KC to come over to Munich next week for medical examination and that he will sign his contract just after it – most likely.

  29. Comment by keeney on July 31, 2009 7:08 AM

According to http://www.soccer365.com/us_news/story_31709130018.php and several german newspapers:

“”We have an agreement in place for Kenny to join 1860 Munich,” Lyle Yorks confirmed to Soccer365. “We look to complete the deal early next week.”"

Cooper will sign at 1860 Munich.

  30. Comment by jonesing on July 31, 2009 7:09 AM

Goodson won’t be on the US World Cup squad. He is improving, but he is way down the list for WC.

Cooper too is unlikely to make the squad no matter where he is playing. Moving to a lower European team isn’t going to help much.

Bradley simply has better options than Cooper and Goodson right now. In a few years these guys have a chance, but not 2010

  31. Comment by Tim on July 31, 2009 8:15 AM

    Check this. He’s gone.

So it looks like 1860 in BL2? Sounds good hopefully he’ll get a generous amount of playtime

  33. Comment by hutchtx on July 31, 2009 9:10 AM

Good move for all, I think. Kenny REALLY needs to change in clubs and leagues to continue his growth. We love him but he’s stagnating under Bus Coach’s “leadership.”

  34. Comment by Moose McDowell on July 31, 2009 9:19 AM

    Good luck Coop.

  35. Comment by Nathan on July 31, 2009 9:20 AM

Apparently your sources were wrong this time.. or at least it appears they were confused.

  36. Comment by hutchtx on July 31, 2009 9:20 AM

Buzz, will he play on Saturday? Or at least be there to say goodbye? When does he leave?

  37. Comment by Steve on July 31, 2009 9:30 AM

    http://www.soccer365.com/us_news/story_31709130018.php

“We have an agreement in place for Kenny to join 1860 Munich,” (Cooper’s agent) Lyle Yorks confirmed to Soccer365. “We look to complete the deal early next week.”

This article is the only one I can find, and it makes no implication that FCD or MLS are going to approve the offer. Buzz is reporting that this offer was received and rejected, and Goff made a similar offer rejected report on 7/17. No contradiction yet…

  38. Comment by Buzz Carrick on July 31, 2009 9:34 AM

Nathan, a lot can happen in two days. Obviously the sources that gave me this info accomplished what they intended. The last offers as of two days ago were rejected. Draw from that what you will.

    Hutch, I don’t know.

  39. Comment by peter on July 31, 2009 9:36 AM

In addition to German papers, the FC Dallas front office has now confirmed it via email to season ticket holders. 1860 Munich, indeed! Tcuss Kenny!

  40. Comment by SteveToro on July 31, 2009 9:37 AM

I feel like all 3000 FCD season ticket holders screamed out simultaneously in pain — and then were silenced.

  41. Comment by Nathan on July 31, 2009 9:52 AM

Interesting.. perhaps either Munich upped their offer and it became too good to refuse or FCD secured a means to utilize the transfer monies to pony up a worthy replacment.. but I’d bet my money on the former rather than the latter.

    Stevetoro,
If you love someone, you have to let them go.

Glad that MLS/FCD seem to have positioned this well and 1860 must have improved their transfer fee. Looking forward to numbers on the transfer fee.

For those that don’t know much about 1860:

Well, who are we going to waste all this money from the Cooper deal on now?

We need a soccer person to make decisions, not a college coach and not a general manager. When will FCD get someone that knows soccer…..?

Can they just sell this team?

  46. Comment by Andy on July 31, 2009 4:45 PM

How much do you think FCD would go for on the market these days? A profitable club (despite lagging attendance) in a league which is “hot”.
