Chasing Allocations

July 26th, 2009 . 12:50 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

Just an update of some of the stuff I’m hearing.

As you probably know by now, FCD sits #1 on the returning player allocation list.  Mostly this is for returning US player, but it can be used for any former player who returns to the league.  So let’s check on some of the possible names, shall we?

Freddy Adu: I posted before that the “he needs to be playing” tag had resurfaced.  Apparently he’s surplus to requirements in Portugal.  Now on his twitter feed he says, “some interesting developments going on. Will keep you guys posted.”  He’s been back in the states working out with a NFL team of all things.  That sounds kind of like MLS bound to me.

Stern John: He may not be going to Crystal Palace, he may be staying at Southampton.  I had heard he at least talked to MLS and expressed an interest in coming back.  Was that real or was that part of negotiating with the Saints and Palace?

Damarcus Beasley: He still has one more year at Rangers on $1 million I hear.  Even the needs to be playing card might not get a guy to give that up.  Rumor has it he negotiated with LA Galaxy, presumably when they were top of the allocation list, and turned down $500k from them.  So is Beasley worth a DP slot upwards of $500k?  Not in my book.  He may regret passing on that offer at some point.  Here’s a bit about how much Beasley loves Rangers.

Heath Pearce: He’s been dumped down the his club’s amateur reserve side, and now he says “I need to be playing.”  He’s trying to figure out where he wants to play and he’s out of contract.  Is MLS a possibility?  Maybe.  I would have taken him, but FCD just signed a left back.  Is it worth adding two of them?  Probably not.

Joseph Ngwenya: He’s negotiating with MLS, but since he left as a free agent and wasn’t sold, Houston can reclaim him. The only way he could fall to FCD would be if Houston passes.  Which isn’t likely I don’t think.

So who else is out there?

Edit: Not that it will come as a shock given the reports of Holland etc, but I’m hearing on this end Adu is definatly NOT coming here.

I thinking its Freddy Adu and I think SH knows it. We just signed a LB and RW so no Beasley or Pearce. Houstank will pick up Ngwenya and John is up there in age. On top of that I really really think Cooper is gone now with his performance in his limited time at the Gold Cup. So its looking like Adu and Cunny up top with Brek of the bench. A lot of speed which is a good thing IMHO.

From your list vs our needs, I think Adu at Striker makes the most sense.

Even though he’s small, he’s got a low center of gravity and is scary with his feet. So, I think he’d improve our Forwards abilities to show & hold.

Um, doesnt he play the same role as David Ferreira? you gonna bench you’re big $$$ signing from your big partner club yet again?

has anyone else thought adu might be trying to sign with and NFL team as a kicker? he definitely make WAY more money.

No, I disagree, Adu can play a different game than David.

Oddly, due to taxes, cost of living, etc 1 Million US$ contract in Scotland is basically like having a 700kUS$ contract in a generic US city.

Yes, i only used national averages and not local.

Yes, I am tempted to do the same for US cities with MLS clubs.

How ironic, the league forces Dallas to give up the #1 draft pick the year Freddy comes into the league in order to get him to DC and then, after all these years, he still ends up in Dallas.

i’d definitely take freddy adu. he still has more talent than anyone listed on that list. i do agree that he appears to play a similar role as david, but, IMO, could definitely take it more than david. but then again, how much would it take adu to come back to MLS on a team which is just awful and draws about 500 people a game? i’d rather stay in europe

Freddy to be re-re-reunited with Ellinger?

    (U17s, RSL, FCD)

Looks like Adu’s looking at opportunities in Spain and Holland, according to his Twitter feed.

I wonder if Houston would take the #1 allocation in trade for rights to Ngwenya.
