Zip It: FC Dallas at Real Salt Lake
July 25th, 2009 . 3:30 am . By: Jay BrownleeCharles Dickens once wrote a novel about the years before the French Revolution that began with the famous words: “It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.” FC Dallas experienced A Tale of Two Cities in one match. Call it A Tale of Two Halves, but after playing their best half of football on the season so far, FC Dallas fell back to Earth with a thud, losing 4-2 in Salt Lake City Friday night. The first half was a glorious glimpse into What Might Be as Head Coach Schellas Hyndman was able to showcase recent acquisitions Atiba Harris and Jair Benitez. And for those precious 45 minutes, Hyndman looked to be a genius. Benitez, brought in on loan to lock down the left back position, looked skilled, fast and dangerous. He combined with Dave Van Den Berg well, leading to Van Den Berg’s finest match of the year. Left free to create, Van Den Berg was often spotted pinching into more central- and dangerous- areas, while Benitez over-lapped with authority. Atiba Harris came into the match as Dallas first true right wing in two seasons. While Harris’ effect wasn’t as immediately noticeable as Benitez, Dallas looked more balanced than at any time this season. These additions had another effect: Hyndman was able to move away from the 4-1-4-1 for the first time in what seems like forever in favor of a flat 4-4-2, David Ferreira providing the second striker role to Jeff Cunningham’s target striker position. It worked. Brilliantly. Cunningham continued his hard work, with results. His hustle and grit earned the first goal of the match, a nifty poach on poor defensive work, to put Dallas ahead 1-0 at the 13’ mark. Eight minutes later, FC Dallas provided the prettiest offensive work of the year to go ahead 2-0. Andre Rocha won a ball deep in the FC Dallas half, and quickly found Dax McCarty, who placed a lovely ball to the feet of Cunningham, who found Ferreira on the overlap. Ferreira one-touched a perfect ball to the feet of Van Den Berg, who simply knocked the ball under a diving Nick Rimando for his first goal of the year. Dallas carried the lead comfortably into the second half. And then all hell broke loose. Real Salt Lake came out flying in the second half, obviously charged on Jason Kreis’ words or the high mountain air or something, I don’t know what. Either way, they were a completely different team. So was Dallas. George John- stop me if you’ve heard this before- was forced off at half, this time succumbing to a hamstring injury. Former Real Salt Laker Daniel Torres came on as his replacement, eventually accounting for all three Real goals from the run of play. It did not take long for Salt Lake to crack Dallas’ paper-thin veneer. Yura Movsisian, benched after a horrible outing only a week ago, came on with a purpose. Torres was burned badly, putting him in on a one-on-one with Burse, cooly placing Salt Lake back into the match in the 55th minute. Just seven minutes later, Dallas suffered a very soft penalty as Benitez got tangled up with a box-crashing Robbie Findley. Findley stepped up to the spot and beat Burse to his left, who actually guessed right on the play, tying the score at two apiece. Dallas had a chance to go back ahead in the 84th minute as Clint Mathis handled the ball in the box from a free kick. Cunningham, however, was not up to the task as Rimando made the easy save on the ensuing penalty kick. As Salt Lake pressed hard for the advantage, a ball knocked across the mouth of the goal was ricocheted off Torres for an own-goal, putting Dallas down 3-2 only two minutes from full-time. Movsisian added the nail in the coffin for Dallas deep into extra time as Torres was again burned badly. You can call this Torres’ Trifecta From Hell. Drew Moor also finished poorly as he was shown a red card late in the match for an ill-advised studs-up challenge. FC Dallas has been a club who has been simply unable to make two steps forward. Each time progress is made, injury, poor play or flat-out sorry fortune costs the club. Hyndman will be forced to replace half the back-line as Moor serves his suspension and <Insert Centerback Of The Week> attempts to right the ship, yet again. The good news is that Kenny Cooper will be back and should be available for selection. The question of whether he starts or not should be of some interest, however. Hyndman has made a point of rewarding players for performing well with starts and minutes. Does he sit Cunningham, who has performed well? How about Ferreira? But figuring out such a question should be simple compared to repairing FC Dallas again-fractured back line. Like Hyndman or hate him, the guy is going to earn his money. 26 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

I have to disagree with the last line… this team is given poor subs, late goals, injuries, and we all know i could go on… but this is on the coach… ever since he came in last year we fail on an epic level…. i understand bad luck once or twice… but in MY mind i blame Hyndman
Danny Torres, step right up — you’re the next one to be voted off the island…
Torres hasn’t played for weeks. He’s still bothered with hamstring pain and not 100%, so give the guy a break. If John didn’t get hurt, Torres would never have attempted to play. The whole team disappeared in the second half. There were huge holes in midfield. Burse was completely out of position on one of the goals. Cunningham missed a game changing penalty. So there is plenty of blame to go around.
I honestly cant find a reason why Torres and Wagner should be here with the window open.
On the bright side, Torres finally played a good game for RSL.
Maybe Bus Coach will finally bench rocha and try to move back to the diamond.
Cooper-Cunningham
Ferreira
VdB—Harris
Dax
Benitez-Davies-Richetti-Purdy
I like Drew Moor, although I believe he’s overrated.
But after that tackle last night the league should suspend him at least 3 games.
Glad to see we finally found a solid left back to balance the defense. However, I to do not totally agree with your last statement. I noticed at the beginning of the year that our boys just weren’t playing with the passion and determination they had before. They just seemed to go through the motions. This can be put on Hyndman, much like a poor second half can. Going in with a 2-0 lead means the manager needs to make sure his team don’t go out of the locker room thinking the game is won. Yes, the John injury was unfortunate, but there’s no reason Daniel Torres should be blamed for those three goals. Just like one player does not beat a team, one player does not cause his team to lose. It should’ve been seen after the first time or two Torres was burned that he obviously cannot mark Movsisyan. So, put someone else on him, or tell a midfielder to track back more into the defense (you’re up 2-0, you can afford to defend a bit). I feel this game can also partly be blamed on Hyndman’s inability to make quick tactical changes.
Daniel Torres lost this game for us. There’s no soft-pedaling that fact. He needs to be dropped ASAP. Does Hyndman deserve some of the blame? Absolutely. His favoritism for “his guys” continues to kill this team. Disappointed with Drew Moor, but I can understand his frustration.
and let’s not forget.. the ref was an absolute moron. There was absolutlely no consistency to his decisions last night.. in my mind neither of the PKs ought to have been PKs.. some of the yellows should have been reds and some things just went completely unpunished.
If you take out the PK calls, then Dallas would have won this game I think, despite Torres grandpa soccer legs.
I thought Rocha did ok actually, much better than he has been.. but please please bring back Kyle Davies.
This was a very frustrating loss, but it was also some of the best soccer I’ve seen from FCD all year. The guys just have to put this game aside and move on (again).
and what’s up with the Kreis vs Cletus red card crap…. what a disaster.
FCD checklist for every game this season: opposing coach makes halftime adjustmets that payoff immediately, Daniel Torres is beaten, subs come on way too late if at all, lack of fitness is exposed in the second half, Andre Rocha fades in and out, Ray Burse is mis-positioned on a goal, a dumb red card, points are lost. Throw in poor officiating and it’s all there…again. What’s the definition of insanity?
SH is an idiot. Didn’t we establish several weeks ago Davies was a much better central defender than Torres? Davies was there, he was on the bench, so obviously able to play.
SH is a f’ing idiot.
Go ahead and trade Avi if you won’t use him. I applaud the Saragosa trade, but Atiba Harris is not the right MF we’ve been looking for or need, but Avila possibly could be.
This team will never be more than a joke with SH as the coach, period.
I agree about Davies, i’ve not seen him put a foot wrong when he’s played this season. I like John and you could make a case for him over Davies but for me it’s two from the three of Davies, John and Richetti. Torres shouldn’t get a look in. Other than that i thought we were unlucky yesterday. There was some genuinely beautiful stuff played in the first half, without a doubt the best i’ve seen us play since i crossed the Atlantic last December, the second goal was the epitomy of the imrpovements we’ve made in the last couple of months and seemed to validate SH’s decisions. We should have wrapped it up before half-time with Cunnigham and others guilty of missed chances so i can’t totally blame Torres, although if Davies had been playing 2-0 would have likely been the final score. All in all a hugely disappointing result, but on the plus side a game that shows we can mix it going forward even without Cooper (who’s all but sold to Bristol City apparently) and one ropey centre back away from a solid defence. Davies or John in next week and, injuries permitting, i think we’ll have a good rest of the season, although even the most optimistic of FCD fans will likely admit it’s too late for this year.
I’m afraid I am in agreement with JPB4 on this one…the loss belongs squarely on the shoulders of SH. Davies and John are our two best central defenders, with Pablo doing a laudable impersonation as CB by necessity. With a 2-0 lead, why not bring Pablo forward and ADD a defender, taking the winded Rocha out of the game? Why not use Brek Shay as the ultimately counter attacker and general pest up top in about minute 60? Why not give Avila some minutes?
I love the guy, but he is not an appropriate coach at the professional level of play. To lose that game after being up 2-0 at the 55 minute mark is a clear disaster of leadership–this was a shambolic display of game management by SH. We need to find an experienced and well-tested coach who knows how to get results. Other coaches like Steve Nicol and Jason Kreis make adjustments and we simply look like we have our pants down. Torres is about as fast as I am at 45 years old. GET HIM OFF THE TEAM! His” reverse hat trick” should convince everyone of that, even our clueless coach.
Hopefully sh has a steep learning curve. I enjoyed the 1st half.
There is no way you can make a case for John over Davies. SH gets on Wallace about poor passing decisions, but John gives the ball away just as frequently, just in themiddle of the field. Davies should be starting over John, because even if they are the same quality of defender, Davies is a much better passer and organizer.
Picking up Torres was a mistake from the beginning – he has never done well in MLS. Putting him in over Davies is a mistake as well.
The additions improve the athleticism of the side. The left back is a stud. But Harris is another player who doesn’t pass well. He loses the ball countless time with poor decision making and just poor passing when he isn’t under pressure. Unfortunately, Dax, Cooper, Rocha, and Cunningham all do the same thing. The changes are an improvement, but the lack fo quality passing will keep us from making any kind of run to the playoffs.
This loss was AGAIN a coaching problem. WHY THE HELL did SH put Torres in for John? WTF? Davies has been playing well. Torres isn’t that great, and he hasn’t even been playing!! WTF??!
Why was vDB playing in the middle, and sometimes even the right, during the 2nd half? And where the hell was Rocha? Was he even playing? When will SH learn that Avila is the way to go, NOT Rocha.
I’m so sick of this Mickey Mouse coach driving the team into the ground. The reason we consistently go down the pooper in the 2nd half is because we’re getting out-coached. SH has got to be the laughing stock of the league.
you cant blam 4 goals in the 2nd half of a game on the referee. thats the team’s fault. Both teams had to deal with the referee. both teams had pks, RSL converted, FCD did not. both teams had sendoffs, including RSLs coach for 20 minutes. Kreis was actually fairly obligatory when he was asked to leave.
maybe Espindola should have been off earlier in the match fo r2 yellows (I mean, he did knock down Moor several times). Cunningham hit the deck at least 7 times too, but he got a chance and didnt take it. but the final foul count was totally even.
Bottom line, FCD didnt win. Davies should come in, maybe should stay in. Cooper gets his spot back. Torres should probably be dropped (thats Ellinger’s guy too BTW!!!!) Torres played the exact same way he’s always played in Salt Lake City, it just happened to be for us this time.
maybe the last sentence should read “that game just sucked”
Ok, with Torres still injured, the injury history of George, why in hell did we release Wallace to Under 20’s. I would have rather seen Wallace in there in the 2nd half. His speed on defense could have turned that game differently in the 2nd half.
Something has got to be said about Ray Burse. While I’m willing to forgive the occassional own goal, possibly the worst kicking and distribution in the league and the general lack of leadership and/or (mis)communication with the back 4, I can’t forgive his constant being out of position. He has that deer-in-headlights look and I’m more convinced than ever that he doesn’t know where he’s supposed to be. He has plenty of responsibility for that humiliation last night. Some players are ‘big game’ type of players and he has shown when the pressure is on he’s not. If Sala isn’t ready to play let’s give Josh a chance. The kid at least knows how to cover his near post and won’t receive any goals right up the middle.
As a card carrying member of the Anti-Rocha Fan Club, it should be noted that Rocha “found” Dax by giving the ball away, which was promptly given right back to Dax. So, either Rocha was brilliant or sloppy, again. I will say Rocha did more positive things this game than I’ve seen from him all year. Still a net negative, but more positive. Guess that means he’s got the starting position locked up.
Thank you “Doug”! Ray’s “Fish out of water flopping” and always falling to the ground before a ball is even struck has cost him too many times.
This team is broke and needs to be overhauled!!! This so-called patch-work game-to-game lack of adjustment at halftime is childs play! It is all getting butt-boring for me. SH has worn out his welcome.
And I forgot to add, with only minutes to play in stoppage time, Rocha’s strolling off the field when he was subbed out was either appalling stupidity or rank insubordination. He did it last year, too. Is SH the only coach in the world who’ll tolerate that? Maybe Rocha’s real “supportive” of SH.
Agree totally with herdmentality about Rocha- also agree with Doug that it’s time to give Josh a chance at goalie if Dario can’t go
i don’t mind john starting at
CB b/c i can see he will have a bright future there. now, if torres wasn’t 100% like some of you are mentioning, then the blame goes to the coach for not putting a player (davies perhaps) that was more fit. and to coin the phrase “playing not to lose” is exactly what SH did by admitting they bunkered down more in the 2nd half.
to resolve the RB situation for this week, they can put rocha back and start avila in rocha’s spot. maybe this should’ve been rocha’s spot since the beginning.
