Zip It: Comunicaciones vs FC Dallas

July 16th, 2009 . 2:28 am . By: Jay Brownlee

CSD Comunicaciones of Guatemala, known to their fans as Las Cremas, came into Pizza Hut Park to face FC Dallas in a pre-season tune-up friendly and losing 2-0 to the home club.

FC Dallas came into the match on the heels of an ugly loss in Colorado and looking forward to a bye week, including the next four days off.

It was a perfect recipe for a dull match.

I, on the other hand, made a lovely recipe of baked fish, sure to be a winner.

A corner kick from Dave Van Den Berg found the head of a wide-open Daniel Torres, whose snap-header easily beat Las Cremas goalkeeper David Guerra for the first-half’s only goal.  However, Dallas easily dominated play as the out-of-form Guatemalans rarely even bothered to step up defensively. Guerra kept the match close by making several outstanding reaction saves, including at least two one-on-one chances.

I added fresh pecans, dried rosemary, enough garlic to make Emeril Lagasse blush, and cayenne pepper to my food processor and ground them up. This recipe would dominate.

And Dallas continued to dominate the match in the second half. Dario Sala, in his return between the pipes was never seriously challenged on the evening. Substitute Anthony Wallace, on for Van Den Berg found Brek Shea up the left side. Shea wisely squared the ball to the feet of David Ferreira, who found a wide-open Eric Avila. Avila calmly put the ball to the far post, easily beating Guerra to finish out the scoring on the evening.

My recipe would also have a lovely finish. The recipe called for trout, but I wisely substituted Salmon found on sale. Kosher salt was sprinkled over the fish, and then an egg white was brushed over the pink flesh. The pecan mixture was then pressed into the fish to form the tasty coating. A drizzle of olive oil finished it all off, ready for placing into my pre-heated 400° F oven.

The rest of the match was fairly uneventful, except for what has become a trademark of FC Dallas friendlies: a near-brawl. Comunicaciones player Freddy Thompson took exception to shirt-tugging near the touch-line from Dax McCarty. Thompson and McCarty then went face to face, trading words they most likely would never say to their mothers. Both sides ran to their player’s defense, creating momentary pandemonium. Both players were summarily ejected and trudged off the pitch.

I waited about 20 minutes to check my fish, but it wasn’t quite ready yet. After another five minutes or so, the flesh was nice and flaky, and I removed it from the oven to cool.

The FC Dallas players will now have a few days to get away from soccer and cool off as well. Head Coach Schellas Hyndman and company, however, have work to do. They must begin adding the pieces to the puzzle that are missing from this club. Simply passing over Danny Szetela for DC United to scoop up is a less-than-glamorous start. Hopefully, they have something up their sleeves for the few remaining FC Dallas faithful.

As for me, the fish cooled down and tasted wonderfully. It is such a nice recipe, and much more exciting than another dull mid-season friendly for a team going nowhere. De-LISH!

Haha! Your write ups are funnier the later you post them (2 in the morning). Love how you extended your report with your own “recipe for success.” Otherwise, it would have indeed been a short article.

It was still fun being there and sitting with fans and making irrelevant comments, such as, “ooh, cool cross in by vdB to find the head of the shortest guy on the team (Ferreira)!” But, then, most of the Guatemalans were short, even their keeper, although he made some very good saves.

We had to leave early, so we missed the “mandatory” (near) fight.

Hey Hutch, if you left early you probably also missed the Inferno singing Bohemian Rhapsody. I’m sure we were crap, but it was fun. :)

Rats! Although I do wish for more crowded stands in the regular games, it was kind of fun having so few people there — so that you could hear the Inferno loud and clear and could hear the players talking on the field. The Guatemalans, at least, did a lot of talking.

Was that the coveted Trinity River salmon?
