Non-American ex-MLS Players

July 16th, 2009 . 2:12 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

So Hyndman says the #1 allocation can be a non-American.  Who’s out there?

This page has what looks like fairly comprehensive list of Ex-MLS’ers.   FCD is looking for a left back, right mid, and maybe a striker.

I’ll picked out some I find intriguing in one form or another.

Name Team MLS Comment
Joselito Vaca Oriente Petrolero (Bolivia) DAL, NY Ex of Dallas, but isn’t the right position
Dipsy Selolwane Ajax Cape Town (South Africa) CHI, RSL High striker with serious pace.  Probably not good enough.
Stern John Southampton (England) CLB 32, This seems the most probable.
Ryan Nelsen Blackburn Rovers (England) DC 31, but can play central mid or center back.  Which would let FCD go flat four.
Francisco Mendoza CD Guadalajara (Mexico) CHV Really nice player, but would Chivas let him come to anyone but Chias USA?
Chris Gbandi FK Haugesund (Norway) DAL A left back.  But #1 allocation?  I sure would take him back in a hurry though.
Roberto Mina Belgrano de Cordoba (Argentina) DAL That bridge must be burnt out by now.
Joseph Ngwenya Antalyaspor (Turkey) LA, CLB, HOU A cheaper, less skilled Stern John? Might be fun to stick it to Houston.
Ramón Núñez Cruz Azul DAL, CHV Just signed with Cruz Azul, not what FCD needs anyway.

I can think of one not on there, Tony Nhleko.  He’s on his 7th team since leaving Dallas.  Don’t think he’s the answer either.

Who did I miss?

    Mina is way too lazy
Nunez didn;t do anything when in Dallas or with Chivas
Gbandi is the original Saragossa, too many mistakes and bone head cards

I would say Stern John by far.

I agree, of the list above, Stern John is the best, although at 32, could be a dicey prospect. Some are great up to 35, some go downhill considerably before then. So, it depends on how his health, fitness, etc. are lately.

So Buzz, is Shellas using this as a defense/rationale for letting DC United grab the most recent player scot free?

    Robert, Yes.

    You forgot about me!

Highly unlikely that Nelsen will leave Blackburn at this point in his career. He didn’t have a great season last year, but he’s still an important piece in Allardyce’s team.

Stern John has just been offered a contract with Crystal Palace:

Don’t think he’d take MLS over that. Sorry, Buzz

Ronnie, I didn’t forget about you. Since as far as I know your not playing anywhere you wouldn’t take a allocation to sign.

We have one of the worst teams in league history and the comments are like we can be choosy. We need good players, Gbandi, ROB, Stern John are all better than what we have, I like them all. We do seriously suck and fresh blood would help.

Kirk, no need to be sorry to me. I’m not the one that is staking my window transfers on a player that likly won’t be coming back now.

Gbandi is not better than what we have.

Buzz I’m going to assume some minimal confidence in the FO and say that Stern John wasn’t the reason they past on Szetela. It looks like the CP rumors were flying for the past week or so.

At this point I’m at a loss for who they are after.

What about Denilson or Davino? Just joking.

This is off subject, but if a player is drafted but doesn’t sign, or if he forgoes the draft altogether, is he covered by the allocation? Maybe Nguyen is tired of Vietnam.

    What about Andy Herron?
Or did Veron get close enough to signing with DC a while back to qualify?

    Buzz, you forgot Mark Wilson.

Or Francis Doe? I think we’d take back Sebastian Le Toux right now too, since we had the chance to sign him and didnt.

Scott Sealy can attack from the right mid and play second striker.

Also, Jose Cancela played along the right for NE in his day. not sure he’s come back to MLS though, but Dallas has gotta be a better fit than NE for him.

Better question, what happened to Doudou Toure?

I’d love to see Ngwenya here.

    Great list. Thanks

  21. Comment by Jason B on July 17, 2009 1:18 PM

John is the only one on that list worthy of a number 1 allocation. Ngwenya isn’t worth that.

  22. Comment by mudpoet on July 17, 2009 1:41 PM

John is the only one I’d want, unless Gbandi has wised up some…

  23. Comment by BigBoy on July 17, 2009 6:29 PM

    Eddie Johnson……Anyone????

    DJ Countess…..oh nevermind

  24. Comment by Adam on July 18, 2009 5:54 PM

BigBoy: Eddie Johnson should come back, i like that thought. As for Stern John, i don’t know.

  25. Comment by soccer goals on July 23, 2009 3:17 PM

    Ngwenya is a good player.
