FCD Passes on Szetela

July 15th, 2009 . 6:06 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

People in DC seemed to believe this would be the case all along as today FC Dallas passed on Danny Szetela.

Unless there is something we don’t know, FCD blew this one.

You see Szetela had already met with DC official Tuesday.  Which means DC wanted him and Szetela wanted to go to DC.  In other words, everyone tipped their hand.

Dallas should have held DC over the flames and demanded a swap of spots with something in return.  Even if it meant taking the player and then forcing DC to trade.  I just don’t see another returning American making that move not worth the risk from the FCD point of view.  It would have been worth the risk of being stuck with Szetela, it’s not like the guy stinks.

It would be exactly like the #1 team in the MLS SuperDraft passing on the best player and leaving him for the #2 team.  Perhaps this is even worse as no one knows if there is even going to be a #2 player.  Can you imagine if Seattle would have not taken Zakuani saying, “well he wants to go to DC so we’re not taking him.”

Remember Baltimore drafting John Elway, then trading to Denver?  How about Eli Manning to NY, did the Colts Chargers just pass on him?  Nope.  How about when Freddy Adu wanted to go to DC?  At least the league “forced” FCD to trade that pick for something in return.

So there better be a consideration at a later date form DC we don’t know about, even if it’s just “you owe me one.”  Or there better but a lights out American coming back that FCD knows about.

Cause otherwise FCD dropped the ball here and let DC have the player they wanted for nothing.

Perhaps with the track record of this current front office and coaching staff that shouldn’t surprise us.

Here’s some video of Szetela training with DC to rub it in.

FCD will come out looking good for passing on this one.

Washington Post Insider Steve Goff is insinuating that FC Dallas did it because Kenny Cooper may be leaving to play for Bristol City in the English Championship and a veteran US National Team Player (Damarcus Beasley????) may be returning to MLS. By passing on Szetela FC Dallas stays in the poll position to land him.

    Buzz,

You are straight trippin . . You’re acting like we just missed out on a sure-fire national teamer. He would have just impeded the progress of Avi, Brek, Dax, etc. This year is practically in the bags already, good decision staying patient and not jumping at the first thing that became available.

I think you are misunderstanding my point. I’m not annoyed that FCD missed on Szetela. I’m annoyed they gave him to DC for free.

We should have picked up Szetela and then traded him to DC!!

Buzz, I totally agree. This looks like it was an easy chance to pickup something, anything from DC. Certainly the FO wasn’t so myopic that the decision was simply do we want Szetela or someone else. And I hope that someone else is not DMB.

Just more idiocy from the FCD front office. Are we that suprised?

As a technical note, it was the Chargers that passed on Eli Manning. His bro plays for the Colts. Somewhere SteveToro is crying.

I knew that. I think I brain farted the Colts cause I typed Baltimore right before that.

In order to criticize the FO you have to make the following assumptions.

    1. That DCU wanted Szetela bad enough to trade something of value

    2. That FCD doesn’t foresee something BETTER THAN WHAT DCU was willing to trade coming down the pipe.

I don’t know if you can say either of things with any degree of certainty. Just because DCU decided to use their allocation to get Szetela doesn’t mean they wanted him so much that they were willing to deal a lot in exchange. Now, let’s say they were willing to deal, there’s nothing to say that what they were offering was any better than what FCD sees coming down the pipe this summer in terms of returning Yanks. I think it’s a bit presumptious to assume the FO messed this one up…at this point. Personally, I can’t see DCU trading anything of value for a kid who couldn’t make his way to Brescia’s bench for the better part of last year.

A bigger fish will rise to the surface in a week or so – I’m sure of it.

Everyone take a breath… FCD did not blow this. Fact is Szetela was on the Crew squad for 3+ years during which he seldom ever played, not becasue he didn’t have talent, but because he’s a head case. If he doesn’t get treated just as he expects he sulks and pouts for weeks. Sigi Schmid ( late of Crew, not of Seattle) had his fill of this kid. And frankly, if
Sigi couldn’t get him to play hard, I’m not sure Hyndman would have any better luck. This kid will never reach his athletic potential . . . and it’s all in his head.

[...] Yesterday I was fairly harsh on the decision to pass on Szetela without getting something from DC.  I said, and I still think I’m right, that there had better be something we don’t know.  Some consideration or some player set to come back that will make it worthwhile. [...]
