Cooper to Bristol City?

July 15th, 2009 . 7:35 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

Almost a laughing matter.

A story surfaced today in the Daily Mail in England (which is not exactly the New York Times) that says Bristol City has signed (bought?) Kenny Cooper.

When I contacted FCD about the story it was considered so ridiculous and far fetched that they thought it not worth commenting on.

So I now expect a Cooper sale any day.

I’m an American Bristol City fan, and I don’t think this move is going to happen. Our manager was asked about this after our friendly against Ajax today, and had this to say:

And when quizzed about reports City had signed American forward Kenny Cooper, Gary said: “We are linked with players all the time and I can’t comment on individuals. We’re aware of him of course, but we’re looking at lots of players.”

I hope this move doesn’t go through, because we need one more forward, and for that man to be a target man. Just because Cooper is big, unfortunately, he is not a target man.

Cooper is going to go this summer….I could care less to where. The amount that he’s sold for is much more important to the future of this team.

I care where he goes for Cooper’s sake, cause I like the guy, and he might block if FCD lines up a club in outer Mongolia.
He should be qualified for a spot and fit in will in the 2nd division in England, Germany or Italy, maybe first div in France.

Maybe he’ll join Nunez at Cruz Azul

Cooper is stagnating in Dallas and needs to get out of the cluster f that is FCD asap.

Any real team/league in the world would sell KC with only 1 1/2 years left on his contract and no chance of resigning him. BUT this is MLS (minor league soccer) so they will likely just let him play it out and walk away on a free. These are not real football people making decisions for the league.

    Steve,
I like Cooper, too. But I think we’ve seen what he’s capable of and I don’t think he’s going to develop his game anymore than he has. What he seems to be is a capable forward who tries way too hard to be a star forward but doesn’t have the talent to pull it off. I think if he gets put into the right system and is treated the right way he can be a competent lower level European player with a long career. I think if he gets put into the wrong system he’ll be back in MLS within 2 years.

    Tex,
Seems like an accurate assessment of the situation. I really hope something clicks for him and he takes off in Europe, but the good/steady career trajectory seems more likely.

The more interesting aspect to all of this is what FCD can do with the allocation they will get as a portion of the transfer fee. Assuming the transfer is over $2 million, FCD should get a sizeable transfer as Kenny didn’t cost much to acquire. So then we are sitting with the top ranking allocation AND another major pot of money AND a few other buckets of cash. There would be ZERO excuse to not get something significant done in the summer.

Your right about one thing – the Daily Mail has no credibility. However, it certainly is more credible than the New York Times.

It could be an interesting transfer.
