Game Grades: FC Dallas vs Colorado Rapids

Things seemingly cannot get over the hump for FC Dallas. Just as you think they might have found a system and form that works – only to end up in Denver and drop a load at an empty Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Even the few players that have been turning out improved performances of late, really struggled Saturday night. Maybe a bad meal was served, or the altitude and giant pitch worked against the team – whatever it was – there wasn’t much ‘positive’ to take home.

Dallas hasn’t been winning a lot of late, but at least they weren’t losing.

You know its a bad night when your team turns out ZERO shots on goal.

It was a generally ugly match as both sides were missing key players and neither could retain possession for very long. Dallas in particular just couldn’t keep the ball. Even after a nifty dispossession to get it Dallas would almost always immediately give it right back, and to make matters worse most of those were unforced.

It was a great chance for Dallas to show that they have improved, but what we got was more proof that recent results may have had more to do with the opposition than FCD getting better.

The move to push Davies out wide and reinsert John in the middle solved nothing. The young Davies looked very uncomfortable and was having such issues that not only was he pulled but vdBerg was moved back to that side to help. Wagner must feel like sloppy seconds after the last two matches.

But the problem really wasn’t the defending. It was the attacking and that begins in the back where long balls go nowhere and short passes are way off the mark. But the midfield was in terrible form with miserable performances across the board.

Hopefully readers won’t cry “bad call” on the goal. The TV replay angle is behind the play and cannot be used as a definitive source. In real time it was a VERY close call and soccer needs a “tie goes to the attack” mentality.

Hyndman has been complaining that he doesn’t have the players he needs, but the problem is that is HIS collection of players. Sure there are injury issues, but generally the condition of FC Dallas’ on field product is of his own making.

Grades:

Burse: 6 – Getting there game by game
Moor: 5 – Defended well, but not much going forward
Ricchetti: 4 – Really bad night of passing
John: 6 – Fought hard through injury, very unlucky fellow
Davies: 4 – Just another ineffective left back
vdBerg: 4 – Looks to be tiring, needs a rest
Shea: 4 – Lots of youthful mistakes, didn’t help the attack or defense
Rocha: 3 – What a bad night of turnovers
Ferreria: 3 – Totally disappeared for long stretches
Dax: 5 – More hard work, but can’t lift entire team on the solo
Cunningham: 4 – Has a love/hate relationship with his touch

Subs:
Wagner: 4 – He and Torres’ confusion played a large part in the goal
Torres: 4 – See above
Avila: 4 – Very ineffective and blew the only good chance on goal

(side note: I have to admit I enjoyed the red shorts with the away tops, now if only we can see the white shorts with the home jerseys)

I didn’t think the shorts looked very good.

If they were to do that, they need more red on the jersey, or more white/blue on the shorts.

Ferreria seems to lack the physical presence to play in the mls. Maybe in S.America he’s a player, but not for FCD.

pony2: Are you talking about american football or soccer?

Soccer is soccer around the world, and if the big teams from england, spain, italy (wich I doubt you love to watch) come to S. America to pick up our “lack of phisycal presence” players, I think that can also play soccer in the US. By the way, I think he is as physical as Maradona (not comparing).
