Not Charlie Davies

July 9th, 2009 . 2:41 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

For those of you, like myself, holding onto a dream of Charlie Davies in red stripes… He’s signing with Sochaux in France.

C’est la vie.

With the success of the US at the Confed Cup, the demand for, and price of, of  US players is going up.  The list of names that might be available for FCD with that number allocation is getting shorter and shorter.

Davies? No way now, even if he wasn’t reported to Sochaux.

Beasley? Still under contract at Rangers.  But with the current form would you want to spend the DP money it would take to get him?

Demerit? Entrenched at Watford.

Spector?  No way after that Confed performance.

Simek?  Still at Wednesday.

Feilnaber?  Probably set for a big move as well.

Gooch?  AC Milan.

Freddy Adu?  No thanks I say.  He’s under contract anyway.

Leading up to previous World Cups there was an Ameican or two that felt they needed playing time and came back to MLS?  Can you think of anyone?

Best that could be hoped for now is a Heath Pearce or maybe a Marco Vidal.  FCD could grab an American who isn’t pricy, but would still require allocation.  That’s about the best hope now.    Clarence Goodson? Hunter Freeman? Chris Gbandi?  It might come to that.

A run at Jose Torres might be worth a try.

At this point it might just be best to save the money and use it all on a foreign player and forget about the #1 American part.

At this point bringing back Badson sounds like a good use of the spot. He was our defender of the year a few years back, plus him and John John at CB would be a pretty tough pair.

Much as I would love otherwise, I doubt Torres would move here – what would he be getting out of it? Better league? No. Better team? No. Not in Europe so easier to call in? Not an issue.

Goodson had a really good showing against Grenada. If his knee is okay and he gets another game, his asking price is going up as well. He always had the atheltic tools, he looks like he has finally gotten then smarter part of the game down. I think it is more likely you are looking at a Cherundolo type. Even Pierce had scounts looking at him, and I don’t think he is worth the price.

Ad Freddie is better than Cunny, so sign him up. Everything is relative.

I thought Goodson improved every year he was here. His last year here was pretty darn good, especially compared to what’s going on now. Paired with Davies in the back could be pretty good.

I think Goodson would bring more than SH hoped Purdy would bring.

Cherundolo just said on goal.com that he wouldn’t mind playing in MLS next (it’s a video article).

I wouldn’t mind seeing some Bundesliga quality crosses.

If Cherun did say that then I would put him top of the list. Drew Moor can play left back.

If Cherundolo comes, who would be waived to open roster space to sign him?

Right now, I think he or Feilhabber (if possible) are the best choices.

Sinceraly I don’t know how good Vidal is, so maybe he is a good option too.

No way for feilhaber. He is too highly rated to come back now. We are well under the salary cap, so should be able to cut dello-russo

fellas, these guys are all playing at their current clubs in Europe. they seem happy. Even Cherundolo was wearing the captains armband before his injuries last season.

Benny wants to stay over there.

Pearce wants to stay, but would you take him anyway? Who wants to use an allocation on a 3rd division left back? not me. Sure he would help FCD, but there’s more value out there, IMO.

Beasley is in terrible form and MLS would have to purchase him, which means transfer fee and they wont do that. He is more likely to come back to MLS, but didnt we just get DvdB to run the left side?

What about someone like Marcus Tracy? or Jared Jeffrey? or Lee Nguyen?

hell, you think SH would like to have Ramon Nunez on this roster?

  13. Comment by Pegasus on July 10, 2009 12:51 PM

Nunez would sure fit one of the intererior mids in the 4-1-4-1. He could take Tom’s spot. His attitude might also digress back in his hometown.
