A Thought: Charlie Davies
June 25th, 2009 . 12:41 pm . By: Buzz CarrickI’ve talked before about How Kenny Cooper isn’t a high striker. I’ve also mentioned that FCD lacks pace. I’m sure by now most of you are aware FCD sits #1 on the allocation list. Which brings me to the following thought… Charlie Davies. Pace. High striker. Solves two problems at once. Likely he needs to be playing regularly if he’s going to make the US team. And Ives says Davies isn’t likely to return to Hammerby.
So can he be had? Hum… Davies may be looking to move up after scoring 21 goals in 56 games at Hammerby. The five game suspension for elbowing Örebro defender Michael Almebäck may hurt his profile and price… or it may not. He might be pricy, is he worth a DP? Can he be had for something in the $250k to $300k range? It would certainly help FCD if Davies feels he needs to be playing everyday on a stage Bradley can see him. The ideal of course would be as a high striker partner for Cooper. But if Cooper is leaving Davies is certainly the kind of player FCD could use to replace him. Just a thought. 20 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

I would love to see that, although in this next year or so he’d be gone quite a bit
I don’t think he would be a good use of a DP, but if FCD would get him but anything under DP money I’d be OK with.
He seems like the kind of kid that everyone doubts, but then he makes the most out of every opportunity he gets and eventually becomes a great player.
Hammarby is in serious financial problems and is looking to sell players to bring in some cash. Davies is considered their number one asset right now.
So in addition to him most likely seeking a DP level salary, a hefty transfer fee would have to headed towards Sweden as well.
Nah, we’ll grab Eddie Johnson on Ellinger’s recommendation as a DP instead…
I’d love to see him in red stripes, but I doubt he’d come to MLS at this point.
Davies would most likely go to another European club instead of coming to FCD or any other MLS club.
Money might talk. We need to create some excitement here. Don’t we, huh?
Not worth it for what we’d have to lay out to get him. Pass.
Eddie Johnson or,
Afonso Alves- the high striker for Miami FC last year, who’s out of contract at the end of the year. He looked good against FCD in the US Open Cup last year.
Maybe his name was Alex Afonso.
1. Davies is going to cross the Baltic; not the Atlantic.
2. It has been reported that after the Reina failure, MLS has an unofficial policy against allowing their teams to use a DP slot on an American.
3. I’ve been told that the MLS offices would really like to see FC Dallas use its DP on a Mexican. They are so lost, they are playing the race card.
WOW. Joe mentioned Alex Afonso, a brazilian good striker who played for Miami FC last year and was the top striker in USL. Right now he is playing in Paraná Clube, in Brazilian Second Division. FCD played against Paraná in a friendly this year during the pre-season. He isn’t a good player, but he definetly knows how to score goals.

Afonso Alves is a striker for Middlebrough in the EPL. He isnt a good player either, but he knows how to score goals. I think i remember him scoring 6 goals in a game in the Dutch league 2 seasons ago.
Reports are out there that Ligue 1 side F.C. Sochaux has shown in interest in Davies as far back as December.
I would be surprised if an MLS team could lure Davies stateside.
I wonder if the FCD brain trust stuffed the “Why you want to play for FC Dallas” marketing package in Cooper’s Gold Cup travel bag so that he could hand it over to Davies.
Who am I kidding? I bet they don’t even have such a package.
Somebody ought to tell Davies about our Corey Gibbs package where he can come over here for a year, mail it in and/or generally underperform, and then head on to a respectable Euro team in a respectable Euro league.
I doubt that he is coming to the MLS, but it is an interesting idea.
A young goal scoring forward with major euro options isn’t coming to MLS unlesss they want to pay Beckham money. MLS is a feeder league not a place promising players come to.
So just to get one thing straight…..two different guys (Alex Alfonso and Alfonso Alves) are labeled as being “not good players who definitely knows how to score goals.” Huh?
Also, the discussion is the use of our allocation slot. Alfonso is Brazilian, not American. The use of an American for DP money is probably not a good use of our precious allocation slot. Allow the use of DP to be DP; keep it separate from allocation of a US player.
