Season Saved? Nope.

June 17th, 2009 . 12:44 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

FCD had a window to save the season with 5 of 6 games at home. They didn’t get it done.

You may recall that five games ago I wrote a little bit about 5 of the next 6 games being at home and how FCD could save the season.  FCD even gave themselves a chance when they went 1-0-2 in the first three.

But FCD blew it.  First they didn’t win the game they should win, and had to win, and that was “zero points on the road” San Jose missing 5 (or was it 6) players.  Then FCD lost, not shockingly, to Houston.

So even if FCD beats Columbus, not likely on evidence and Crew form, FCD would have only gotten 2 wins and 3 ties out of 6.  That’s not good enough.  FCD needed 3 wins plus some other points.

Losing to San Jose, in effect, ended the season.

Even with a Crew win Saturday, FCD will only be at 13 points with 16 games to play (1 short of halfway).  That would leave them needing 27 points to get to the theoretical 40 point target.  27 points is 9 wins out of 16.  Anyone think FCD can win 9 of 16?  It would take a miracle 9-7-0 finish.  (Or 8-5-3, 7-3-6, or 6-1-9.)  That’s wins in over half the games from a team that has two wins as of now (2-7-4).

Those numbers are where Houston and Chivas are.  8-2-3 and 8-4-3.  So if this week in training, FCD can magically go from the third worst team to the third best team, they might make the playoffs.  It would take one of, if not the, greatest turn arounds in league history.

Don’t beat the Crew and it’s 30 points in 16 games.  That’s 10 wins in 16 games.  (10-6-0, 9-4-3, 8-2-6, or 7-0-9)

Impossible.

Not Impossible you might say?  Look at the top 5 unbeaten runs in MLS history.  Every single one of them won the Supporter Shield or tied for it.  That means they were good teams even before they went on their run.  Team’s don’t go from 2 wins to 10 wins overnight.

So season over.

Time to play the kids and start building for 2010.

Unless someone can get the Pope on the phone and miracle up FCD a winning season.

I’ve seen weirder things in sports, never ever count a team out of it (see Colorado Rockies)

The reason against a turnaround is that the players adding spark are the young/inexperienced ones. They should continue to play but they won’t be consistent enough to put together a playoff run.

If SH sticks with the older players, it doesn’t look even that good.

start brek…somewhere…i don’t care…that kid is good. the season is technically over, but i don’t see why SH can’t try and get some team chemistry…it hasn’t worked yet, but maybe sometime before next season we’ll see some gelling…

there is no leadership on the field or in the locker room. Until that gets corrected this team will be a loser.

If you’re talking about Eddie Pope, count me in.

Dallas, San Jose and New York are done.

If Colorado wins their games-in-hand, and other trends continue, you can add Los Angeles and Real Salt Lake to the list also.

This might be the first time that MLS has a pretty clear playoff picture by round 20.
