Hyndman Calls Out Injured Players
June 11th, 2009 . 10:43 am . By: Buzz CarrickYou gotta give the guy one thing, he sure as heck will say what he thinks in the press. One can’t help but wonder if there is a point at which he will lose more than just a player of two doing it. Here’s the latest one, where he rips George John (who despite being injured has been a great draft pick), Steve Purdy, and Bruno Guarda (a perhaps shocking one given his love for the player). The quotes appeared in Steve Hunt’s preview of the Herediano game. Here’s what the gaffer said. On John and Purdy
On Guarda

I saw that. And I had to wonder just how much the players can “speed up their recovery”? Just a week ago, he was saying that they were taking it slow when John had more trouble with his hamstring . . .
And if there are sooo many hamstring problems (Purdy previously, John, Torres), is that a player issue, fitness issue, or training methods issue?
P.S. We saw Sanchez last night. He was on crutches, yet he said he would be put just two weeks. He did NOT look like someone who would be out just 2 weeks.
Sorry buzz, but I have to call you out for changing Hunt’s quote. By leaving out the translation of “Health Club”, you enforce a more negative connotation from Hyndman.
While I may not disagree with your perceived sentiment, you should copy the quote word for word, then go on to say that no one refers to the training room as a “Health Club” at FCD (if that’s true).
I should have capitalized your name. Sorry about that.
Screw that. I got pressured by my coaches to come back from an injury early and all it did was embitter me towards them. Players can’t speed up their recovery unless they’ve been lazy with their rehab. All you can do as a player is do what the doctor tells you and play when you’re ready. Also, all 3 of those players are U-23 I believe. Why risk your career with reinjury followed by the inevitable chronic problems when you’re that young. I understand Hyndman’s frustration, but completely disagree with his handling of the players in this situation.
Moose the translation wasn’t mine, that’s why I took it out. No one at FCD calls the training room the health club. Taking it out took out any positive connotations and put it back in just the speakers words.
What you are reading into the quote is what is there.
The man continually plumbs new depth in my esteem for him. What an asshole.
Thanks for the clarification. You linked to Hunt’s article for evidence so I felt I had to say something.
I think that if Hyndman is a straight shooter then he should have just come out and said that he thinks they aren’t as diligent in rehab as they could have been/should be.
“Two, they’ve got to get a little more enthusiasm and say that the team needs me out there.”
Hmmm, I seem to recall an emphatic F-bomb from John’s mouth while pounding the ground when he knew he tweaked something and had to come off. Don’t think there’s any question he wants to be out there for the team.
“They’re still in the health club (the training room),” Hyndman said.
Moose, Bus Coach didn’t include “the training room” in his quote. The fact that it’s in parentheses indicates that the author of the article put it there for clarification. So “The Health Club” is all SH’s.
And I’m trying to picture players like John or Purdy or Guarda, who KNOW they are fighting or playing time, being “lazy” in their rehab. The more I think about this, the more it ticks me off.
This guy continues to show what an idiot he is and how unqualified he is to be a professional coach. You would think none of us would be surprised by this yet he continues to amaze.
I wonder what the “non-armchair managers” have to say about this.
Hutch I don’t disagree with you in theory – the coach is certainly being inconsistent here (read: not straight shooting, just being a jackass). Aside from that, we’ll have to agree to disagree on the semantics.
SH didnt have anything else to say so he decided to pick on those players and being the reason why FCD is inconsistent…. Maybe they are hurt bc of his pre-season……
you dont blame player but blame the coaching staff and the trainers for players not recovering fast. thats why so many Internationals players do their rehab at some other country bc the “trainer” is the one who makes them recovery faster….
Steve is hurt and will be a while out bc of the coach/trainers who letted him play whenever he wasnt 100%.
Guarda has a ankle injury which usually takes 3-4 weeks to be 100% healed, just take Josh Howard… he came back b4 and was hurt all season long. So I would prefer the player and staff to take their time and heal it right at their 1st chance… Look at Kaka whenever he was at ac milan. He was given 2 weeks out, came back and had to wait 2 other weeks bc of his ankle….
Come on SH, it not because u can take a kick in the nuts and be brave that everybody else can…
Buzz, didn’t you mention back in preseason that this was the first time the team didn’t do fitness training separate from ball work? My memory fades me though so I may be confused.
Carl, that’s correct.
“They’ve got to get a little more enthusiasm and say that the team needs me out there.”
“…they need to be players we can count on.”
As far as things Hyndman says, this is pretty mild. When I read it the first time, I didn’t think anything of it. Heck, he even qualified his comments by clearly stating that he doesn’t want players coming out with injuries.
I’ll criticize Schellas for letting Saragosa see the field at all, but not for this.
Almost every good coach (not even great) shoulders more blame than he should for the sake of the team. Whether its immaturity, idiocy, or him being a complete douche, Hyndman not only doesn’t take the blame he actually deserves, he constantly points the finger. Unfortunately the only one he’s fooling is the front office
It seems Purdy and John have both already come back too soon from injury and were re-injured. Did SH rush them? If not he should be patient because rushing them seems to make them be out longer in the long term. The team has a unbeaten streak (mostly ties) so not sure what the problem is.
I wouldn’t worry about losing the dressing room, he did that last year. The guys can’t stand SH and are only trying to survive and then get out as quickly as possible. Most of them already had a college coach and don’t want another one who’s learning on the job. These are man and need to be treated that way. SH’s comments tell you just how hot it’s getting in Dallas, he’s desparate.
Edy,
Spot on, see Pitchkolan, see Dax (who’s manned up to push through it), see Rocha.
I don’t care if he loses the dressing room.
I am very concerned, though, that he has lost the locker room.
It’s about time to give this team to Oscar like they should have in the first place…
Damn, this is the kind of ranting you’d expect from a college coach.
Oh, wait…
pretty damn low SH
