Three Down, Three to Go
June 1st, 2009 . 1:29 pm . By: Buzz CarrickTwo wins in three still needed. You may recall three games ago, I stated FCD needed 3+ wins, probably even 4 wins out of the next 6 games or the season was over. Having 5 of 6 at home set up the table for a possible run… or killed the season if not. FCD is 3 games into the 6 game stretch, with 3 more coming at home, and FCD has won 1 and tied 2. Meaning if FCD wins 2 of the next 3 they will have done what I said needed to be done. And that was win 3+ games. As I mentioned in the previous piece, teams need, give or take, 40 points to make the playoffs (i.e. finish top 8). Thanks to poster Steve for the following…
So if FCD pulls off the 6 points (2 wins) in the next 3 games, they will have gotten 3 wins + 2 ties from the 6 game stretch and be sitting at 15 points with 16 games to play. Meaning they would need 25 points out of their last 16. Or as Steve puts it, 1.353 PPG. That’s a realistic number if the resurgence continues. Which means the season could be salvaged. All of which makes San Jose next weekend a must win, leaving FCD needing to win 1 between Houston and Columbus. 2 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

Whoops, sorry Buzz, but I think I screwed up my math earlier. winning the next 2 would leave them needing 1.47 ppg over their last 17, If they only get 6 points over the next 3 games, they’ll need 1.565 ppg over the last 16.
For my fellow stat geeks, here are the current standings, presented as single table (more-or-less that’s what MLS has for determining playoffs), ranked by PPG (much more telling than points right now):
Chivas USA 12 7 2 3 24 2 ppg
Houston 10 5 2 3 18 1.8 ppg
Chicago 12 5 1 6 21 1.75 ppg
Seattle 11 4 2 5 17 1.55 ppg
Colorado 10 4 2 4 16 1.6 ppg
Kansas City 12 4 4 4 16 1.33 ppg
D.C. United 12 3 2 7 16 1.33 ppg
Toronto FC 12 4 4 4 16 1.33 ppg
New England 10 3 3 4 13 1.3 ppg
Columbus 11 2 2 7 13 1.18 ppg
Los Angeles 11 1 1 9 12 1.1 ppg
Real Salt Lake 11 3 6 2 11 1.0 ppg
FC Dallas 11 2 6 3 9 .82 ppg
