Practice Observations: Short Bit

Well that didn’t last so long. - Alexander the Great

It got warm eventually today but this morning it was nice.  Started in the 70s and stayed there, my car reporting 77 as I left training.  Mild wind helped keep the temps down, at least in Frisco.

The list of injured is getting long and it might be a problem this weekend.

News, Notes and Observations

- Anthony Wallace, Kyle Davies, and Peri Marosevic are with the U20s.

- Dario Sala is still out a couple more weeks away.

- Pablo Ricchetti is inside working today.  Calf problem.  He a should be back by the weekend says Hyndman.

- George John comes outside for the first time since his injury.  He jogs and does cones.  Usually that means a player is about a week out, but sometimes faster.

- Purdy, still a couple weeks from return.

- Bruno Guarda is also inside like Ricchetti.  Like Ricchetti he also should be back.

- Torres and van den Bergh have some minor dings but are fine to train.

- Kyle Davies returns from the U20s tonight.

- Joe Cooper is out training with FCD.   Cooper Sr. tells me Joe went to England and trained with Blackburn and Blackpool recently.  Instant Scouting Report (Just Add Water):  Nice first touch, better than Kenny’s.  His head isn’t up to the speed, but no college kid is.  Tall, quick enough, can move fairly well and dribble better than some.  Might make a better wide winger than striker.  Not intimidated at this level.

- Emerson Hyndman is around again today, but he doesn’t participate in training.

- Dax McCarty is the best player in training this morning.  Plays both ways, great possession, and as everyone else tires he maintains his level cause his fitness is superb.  Afterward he talks to Ellinger, my guess is Dax was asking what he has to do to get on the field. I wonder the same thing.

- Eric Avila also looks sharp as hell today.  Super smooth on the ball and killing defenders.  I get that he doesn’t start for the inconsistencies, but he’s the most dangerous player on the team right this minute.

- Tom Sanchez must be settling in finally, for the last week or so there is a greater intensity to his play.  He’s bringing it up a notch since he got here.

Catching Up with Schellas Hyndman

Did you think about keeping Anthony Wallace back from the U20s?

You know, I had committed to all those players going, then I had to pull back.  We need Lambo when we knew Dario wasn’t going to come back.  And then we need Brek cause he was playing.  Then we needed Kyle, but I’ll let you have Kyle for one game.  For me to go back to him and say, “Hey, I also need Wally.” I didn’t think that would go over real well.  But of course I put a lot of thought to it.

I agree with you, I thought Wally played well for us. I thought Tom played very well for us. And I thought Avi did very well.  The three subs that we made all contributed.  The interesting thing is the week before the three subs we made all contributed.  Now a lot of that was injuries and we had to put a lot guys in there, but I think we’re getting something off that bench.

Buzz’s Coach Speak Translator: wRongen scares me.

With eight guys injured or gone, will that effect the tactics?  Will you stay 3-5-2 or go back 4-4-2?

I don’t think we’re the team for a three back system.  We just say a team rip us a apart with a 3 back system and I think we were pretty healthy.  Now why did they rip us apart?  We had 11 players versus their 11.  If they had had any finishing ability, and if Ray wasn’t so hot it could have been three, four to zero at halftime.

The three back system is fine when you have wing back players that are really athletic. They can come back and now you’ve got five backs.  We had talked about this just before the game, if they are coming down your side you turn into a full back and the weak side guy is coming in.  But we didn’t see Andre or Dave doing that.  So what we’re doing is playing with three backs, end of story.  Just three backs, and so they really tore us apart.

Buzz’s Coach Speak Translator: I read what you wrote about why a 3-5-2 doesn’t work for us, and you were right.

Ray Burse had a great game, do you have a real battle at the keeper spot?

I think we have some time yet before we have to make that decision. I think what Ray can do to help himself is to continue to make those kind of performances.  My word to Ray before the game was, “Ray, make the saves you’re supposed to make, and don’t be a difference maker in the wrong way because you have been.  You’ve been costing us games and you’ve been costing us goals.  Through your enthusiasm, immaturity, and lack of experience.  That only lasts so long.”  What he did was take it to heart.  I don’t think he made any boo-boos.  His distribution could have been better, his goal kicks could have been better, those things we can live with.  But his decision making he didn’t cost us the game.

Buzz’s Coach Speak Translator: No.  But it’s closer.

Training

Out of warm ups the team does a possession drill.  It’s a typical 5v5 with 5 neutrals on the outside of the box.

Red: Avila, Moor, van den Bergh, Ferreira, Cooper
Green: Dello-Russo, Wagner, Saragosa, Joe C, Cunningham,
Grey: Shea, Rocha, Sanchez, Torres, McCarty

From there it’s a 40x 40 field with full goals.  The teams stay 5v5 but there are no neutrals.  Two touch in the offensive third, Hyndman talks to them about playing quicker and getting to goal faster.

Cunningham and the two Cooper do some finishing with crosses from Dello-Russo, Avila, and Wagner.  Cooper, as almost always, is the last player out.

Lineup Prediction

I would say Avila and McCarty being paired with the groups they were would me they might be starting, but it’s to early and there are two many injuries at this point.  Plus Hyndman talked about them as providing something off the bench, not they played so well this week they start.

From Hyndman’s quote I’ll bet on the 4-4-2 again and with the Davies recall plus the loss of Saragosa, Kyle may be going to with Ricchetti.  (Perhaps Wagner returns with Torres central, or Moor central and Dello out there?).  Too bad Wally was gone, he deserves the start and then it would be easy to put Torres in the middle.

Cooper and Shea seems to be on the cards, and we know Ferreira and VDB aren’t coming out.  Rocha hasn’t played well but he seems to be untouchable.  I would go with Avila, but I bet Hyndman won’t. If Guarda is healthy he will likely start, if not could it be McCarty?

Cooper Shea
Ferreira
van den Bergh Rocha
Guarda
Torres Ricchetti Davies Moor
Burse

Lots of questions marks this early in the week.  Later on we may have more ideas.

Thought of the Day

I would have recalled Wallace.  I still think he’s the player on this team most equipped to play that holding diamond role.  And after the two weeks he’s had and the play last week I would be giving him the start in the middle behind Ferreira.  Particularly since Guarda is injured.

It couldn’t be all that much worse.

“If they had had any finishing ability…”

That part made me laugh. If nothing else, I like Hyndman’s honesty, even if he really shouldn’t openly discuss criticisms of his players.

  2. Comment by texgator on May 26, 2009 9:06 PM

Eugene, he was talking about LA not finishing.

  3. Comment by cowtown on May 26, 2009 9:12 PM

The criticism of RayJ to the media is completely unwarranted, as well as not really delivering any new information. Whatever else, even if he wins us multiple MLS Cups, Schellas has pretty much zero class.

  4. Comment by KK on May 26, 2009 10:10 PM

Rongen scares me too, but probably for different reasons than translated above.

  5. Comment by Eugene on May 26, 2009 10:15 PM

Yeah tex, I got that. I was referring to his criticism of Burse later in the article. You know, “you’ve been costing us games and you’ve been costing us goals.”

cowtown knows what I’m talking about.

  6. Comment by John on May 26, 2009 10:16 PM

I just can’t figure out how Rocha stays on the field.. unreal

buzz, i was late on the last practice report, but i asked 2 questions. They still apply so I’ll ask again.

Do you think SH is regretting the trade of Pitch now?

Also, you’ve said for a long time that the 3-5-2 is the perfect formation for FCD as a club identity. i know this team isn’t equipped for it, but do you still believe its the right formation cuz it clogs the middle up & forces opponents to play thru so much traffic?

  8. Comment by 85 on May 26, 2009 11:03 PM

Maybe it’s something to do with him being a CAP player. Or maybe some of his dirty play is viewed as the oft-revered “bite”.

  9. Comment by Rex Kramer on May 27, 2009 7:06 AM

I’m not sure how Hyndman manages to talk so much to the media given that he seems to have a foot permanently wedged in his mouth. There’s absolutely no reason to criticize RayJ in public like that.

Keep that crap behind closed doors Schellas, putting it out there for everyone to see just makes you look unprofessional and disrespectful.

  10. Comment by Andrew Temple on May 27, 2009 7:32 AM

In my opinion, Hyndman wasn’t insulting Burse in front of the media. He was telling the media what he had told Ray about his recent play. Despite his brilliant showing against LA, he did have some blown saves that MAY have, indeed, cost FCD those matches.

Hyndman made an observation (which is part of his job), told Ray what those observations were, and then told the media WHAT HE TOLD Burse.

Doesn’t say “insulting”, “criticizing”, or “zero class” to me, but again, that’s only my opinion…

  11. Comment by Paul Hanson on May 27, 2009 7:38 AM

pffft..I have no problem with criticizing Ray in public as long as you are correct. And honestly, Ray has given up due to bad positioning some soft goals which were the difference between getting points and not getting points.

I would rather have a coach do that than not tell me at all. I know where I stand with a coach.

This is professional soccer not high school ball. Ray knows he screwed up some games and has not been stellar. From the looks of it, maybe criticism is his motivator. Coach may be playing some games to get the best out of his players.

  12. Comment by John on May 27, 2009 7:42 AM

Public criticism is often used by coaches as motivation, but it is generally done with a certain amount of delibrateness… this guy just spouts off at the mouth with little thought… his comments make me cringe at their thoughtlessness. I’m not sure he ever has a clue where he is going with a comment when he starts

  13. Comment by cowtown on May 27, 2009 7:44 AM

“Ray’s been doing a great job, especially in this last game. Yes, we’re still working on things and Dario is still our #1, but we’re very glad to have Ray.”

I think in some ways we all appreciate that Schellas has diarrhea of the mouth, because we get an insight into the way his mind works, but too often, what we seem to be learning about the way his mind works is very troubling stuff, such as not having his players’ backs.

  14. Comment by Sam on May 27, 2009 8:39 AM

it must be a chore for players to be
criticised publicly. Professional players need able and constructive
leadership. What if SH were to be dealt the same treatment by the FO? I wonder how he would like that……..

  15. Comment by Rex Kramer on May 27, 2009 9:00 AM

Andrew, Paul – why does he need to tell the media exactly what he told Ray? Only the player needs to hear that, not everyone else.

  16. Comment by Buzz Carrick on May 27, 2009 9:33 AM

TT, no I don’t think SH regrets the Pitch trade cause 1. Pitch asked for it and 2. SH didn’t think Pitch was good enough.

I still think in the summer heat here a 3-5-2 is a good formation for Dallas in general terms, which I have said for some time, but not for this group of players as they are now. There are two many pieces missing.

  17. Comment by Andrew Temple on May 27, 2009 9:40 AM

Rex, let’s just agree to disagree.

  18. Comment by Jonathan on May 27, 2009 10:11 AM

Hey Buzz, what if any rumblings ar there about player movement out there when the window opens up? It seems Schellas might believe the 3-5-2 is better if he could get the wingers to play it?

  19. Comment by jamez on May 27, 2009 10:29 AM

3-5-2 is our only chance. we dont have enough defenders for a 4-4-2. heck we need a CDM to play central defense when we only have a 3-man backline.

    lets see something wild like:

    ——Shea——KCJ
    ———Ferreira
    Wagner—————Rocha
    —Wallace—-McCarty
    VDB——Richetti—–Moor

  20. Comment by Buzz Carrick on May 27, 2009 11:21 AM

Jon, SH is a 4-4-2 guy, he won’t make any moves that build toward a 3-5-2 only toward the diamond 4-4-2 he wants to play.

  21. Comment by historian on May 27, 2009 11:55 AM

The really good (ie effective) coaches/managers pick and choose when to publicly criticize a player. I don’t think SH has learned that yet.

  22. Comment by Paul Hanson on May 27, 2009 1:16 PM

Today is a sad day. Oduro to the enemy..

  23. Comment by twotone on May 27, 2009 4:40 PM

Thanks for the answer buzz. I agree with you on the 3-5-2 being a good formation for TX & FCD as an identity.

I think he be able to play the preferred formation with Pitch still here, but you’re probably right in that its ineffective no matter who is playing cuz he doesnt have the right personnel. Its gonna take another couple of transfers to get that.

  24. Comment by pitchcutter on May 27, 2009 9:16 PM

I have no problem with the comments SH made to Burse. The problem I have is he went public with what he said to Burse. Part of leadership is knowing when to talk and not to talk.

  25. Comment by historian on May 27, 2009 10:15 PM

    Isn’t that what I said?
