WOW
Not to be a d-bag because it is clear to me what the numbers above mean, but wouldn’t HSG just say…
Years of Profitability:
PreHSG: 0
HSG: 3
That’s a good point FCU. You could also point out the foreign partnerships.
Overall though, the point of this post is well-taken, Buzz.
From the way the they describe it, if they talked about profitability and partnerships, then it isn’t HSG, but one guy. So you could argue, toss out HSG and keep the one guy.
FCU, yes, excellent point. That is the reason there still is an FCD to talk about.
Profitability….an interesting angle.
It is the angle that the Cincinnati Bengals use in the NFL. The owner (Mike Brown) makes a lot of money off the franchise, so who really cares if a horrendous, losing product is on the field.
Owner’s performance goal = $$$
Fan’s performance goal = Wins
I already have sunk costs in season tickets, so I will continue to show up for the games, but unless I see some significant investments being made to turn the corner that is convincing, I may have to pass on next year. That would be very sad.
MLS does seem to be pushing for less multi-club ownership groups. Hopefully they sell FCD and not the Crew. They seem to be getting some things right up in Columbus. Actually, that is the strangest thing about this whole deal.
With the Southlake debacle alone, HSG has driven this club into the ground. Nice that the team is profitable now, but it’s off of concerts and other events at PHP, not the club itself.
The sooner MLS has a single owner for every club, the better off it will be. End single entity, it’s served its purpose and now needs to be done away with. If someone would lend me a billion, I’d buy the club today.
How does HSG profitability benefit the fan ?
The playoff appearances is a bit misleading. Back in the old days they let just about everybody into the playoffs. And that Open Cup championship from 97 has never been much comfort to me. For on the field performance I’d give pre-HSG a C+ and HSG a C-.
The attendance numbers are absolutely damning.
Profitability has existed for one year, and in that one year, they were barely profitable. I don’t see the trend continuing – low attendance, lack of sponsorships, lost revenue on the fields, lower concession revenue. All those revenue sources are going down. The only thing going strong I guess are concerts. So if concerts can still tip the scales, I guess the operation is still profitable.
