Philadelphia Union

Is that a win for Zolo?

This is all over various message boards but it appears the name, logo, and colors for this Monday’s announcement about the Philly MLS team have been leaked.  Something about some “official” t-shirts and scarves showing up on some site as being for sale.

Anyway I figured I would post it here for FCD fans to take a gander at.

The name is apparently Philadelphia Union.  (or Union Philadelphia? not sure which.)  Here’s the leaked logo and scarves.

Philidelphia Union

PU Scarves

The colors are navy blue and something someone called “vegas gold” with jerseys rumored to be the vertical bar of the Cbus road kits.  The quote on the scarf allegedily means “join or die” but since I don’t read latin I can’t confirm that.

The snake on the logo comes from the Marine “Don’t Tread on Me” Gadsden flag that was made by a bunch of Philly natives that appear to have started the Marines.  13 stars on the logo for the 13 colonies.

The Zolo thing came about when someone, I forget whom, saw a hand written 2010 (for Philly 2010) and asked who Zolo was.  That Zolo name became a rallying cry of sorts and is used by Sons of Ben.  I for one hope they put Zolo on the backs of their jerseys where Colorado has the 5280 thing.

Of course this all could be a big hoax.

So basically they ripped off Nike’s idea for the USMNT. That’s pretty lame.

It’s Notre Dame-ish. I like the colors….at least its different.

Join or Die? Sounds like an Al Qaeda marketing tactic.

the “join or die” tradition goes back to the American revolution when a number of the colonies didn’t want to join the rebellion against england
I believe franklin (though i could be wrong) drew up a cartoon of a snake in 13 pieces (each being a colony) and wrote “join or die” on it, as he believed the war would not succeed without the help of all of the 13 colonies
so really its more of an american thing than the nike thing, and for philly it makes sense as that was the HQ of the revolution and the first capital of america (though it quickly moved to washington)
I like the snake idea i think its pretty cool to tie in the history of the region with the team, something Dallas has obviously not figured out how to do (star? pegasus? HELLO)

all in all i like it a lot, its a bit notre-damey but other than that its classy and ive always loved circle crests. colors and design far better than seattle
i hate the “union” font, but thats my only gripe. good job

Kind of hard to steal something you started. I think it looks good. Hope FCD re-does their’s once they wise up and start targeting adults. Nike tried the Pegasus with the Burnie horse but something more in tune with what’s on the building downtown would be cool.

I bet they have a better record than us even if they haven’t played yet. We’re stuck in FCD HELL.
