LA Galaxy Sign Berhalter
April 3rd, 2009 . 11:53 am . By: Buzz CarrickThe LA Galaxy have signed former US International Gregg Berhalter, most recently of 1860 Munich. Here’s why you should care… FC Dallas was #2 in the Allocation Hierarchy, with this signing FCD moves up to #1. That means the next high profile returning US international signing by MLS will go to FC Dallas. Dallas now has first choice dibs on signings. This is a big year to hold such a position because the World Cup is around the corner. It’s highly likely that one or more US players who are looking to cement or earn a spot in the US team for the World Cup will want to come home to MLS this summer (almost certainly when the Euro season ends) or even now (if said player gets out of their contract like Berhalter) as playing time will become key over the next year. If you are unaware of this rule, any US pool player can only be signed via Allocation using these rankings. (Or if everyone passes on allocation, via weighted lottery.) In Dallas’ own past you may recall Cory Gibbs coming back to get PT and land himself a spot on the US team. So peruse the list of names and see what strikes your fancy. Look for players who get call ups for the US that might not be playing all that much of late for their pro team. DeMarcus Beasley, does he want to play left back cause Dallas doesn’t need a left mid really? How about Steve Cherendulo, does he still start for Hannover 96? Jonathan Spector, how’s he doing at West Ham? Freddy Adu? Maurice Edu? Adin Brown? Charlie Davies? Frank Simik? Benny Feilhaber? Jay DeMerit? What about Jose Torres, think he might want to come home? Or perhaps someone else in MLS might want a name star and could be wiling to give up a lot to move to the top of the list. 14 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

So if Altidore just gets sick and tired of not playing in Spain….we could hit the jackpot!!!!
Well either way, I think FCD is in a great spot. Remember when Freddy Adu came into the league FCD had dibs and they were able to work a trade. I think FCD only uses their allocation on a defensive player though. Best bet is probably Cherendulo, and he would fill a stated need for SH on the right. I think our future left back is Anthony Wallace if the coach would ever play him. then you would have Wallace – Purdy/Pitch – Moor – Cherendulo…Thoughts gang?
I have a hard time believing Beasley would be ok playing left back at FCD.
IMHO, Beasley’s not coming back to MLS.
Pass on Beasley. He has not looked great in USA games.
On our current pace and form we will mathematically eliminated from the playoffs by June. I hope this Euro player shows up soon
i wish fcd the best but forget this…you have bigger problems to deal with. Dude this is a ship without a captain…and shellas has got to go…he just ain’t creating the chemistry. I hope i’m wrong but I don’t the the college coach is translating to the pro ranks…ie sven erickson to the mexican national team…if you know what I mean. You probably have the talent to perform but shellas ain’t able to tap into it and bring it out…
looks like we can have sven if we wanted him. heh. that would be funny slash awesome.
Jay…Jay Demerit! Jay Jay Jay from the USA!
Beerholder is slooooowwwwwww. Not exactly the big and athletic defender SH wanted to cover for other on D.
I like what I’ve seen from Spector AND he’s a defender, just what we need. If only he hadn’t signed a new contract last fall…
Michael Bradley. This guy is a game-changer.
DeMarcus would hate it here. Don’t even think it.
Feilhaber would be good, as would Specter and Cherundulo.
I think FCD should ante up and go for Bradley in a big way.
Paladius, why would Bradley come stateside? Clubs in England are talking about him, and he obviously doesn’t need to be close for national team attention (on multiple levels). I also seriously doubt Edu would come back this quickly.
Best realistic fits to my mind:
– Beasley (if coach Bradley wants him practicing LB on a club).
– Spector
– Cherundolo
– DeMerit
– Charlie Davies or Eddie Johnson (only if Cooper leaves midseason)
– Lee Nguyen (least important of these)
despite our record, i think we’re a very talented team that just needs a few more games to gel.
also, i think we’re one talented CB veteran away to really compete for the top spot in MLS.
