Another Reason to Be Jealous of Seattle

March 29th, 2009 . 8:11 am . By: Chamo Jones

Last night while scrolling through the satellite guide to figure out which channels where carrying the late MLS games, something caught my eye. The Seattle Sounders vs. Real Salt Lake was listed in two places. Not only was it was listed next to the San Jose vs. Houston game where it normally would be, it also was listed amongst the High Def alternate channels.

Could it be? A Direct Kick game in High Def? No way! A local broadcast being produced in High Def? No way! This has to be an error in the guide! I clicked over to the High Def channel with the lowest of expectations. I just knew that I would be greeted with the ole’ power point slide that tells you to tune in when they are broadcasting a game. To my surprise, the beautiful game came on in all of its high def glory.

Seattle keeps raising the bar. We can only hope that the local franchise and the rest of the league start catching up.

Not to burst a bubble here, but I believe the Direct Kick feed was from the RSL broadcast of the game. I believe most RSL games will be carried on a CBS-HD channel this year.

    TJ,

the Direct kick SD broadcast originated from Salt Lake City. The direct kick HD broadcast originated from Seattle. FSN was the network.

Seattle is indeed broadcasting games in HD.

FSN was not the network, they only ccarry a rebroadcast of the match KING/KONG (NB Affilatest) carry the live broadcast.

The rebroad is done because we have people outside the metro-area that still want to watch the game (places like Spokane, Yakima, etc) and for those of us at the match so we can just tune it back in when we get home.

    Dave,

welcome aboard to the league. Direct Kick always shows the live games even if they aren’t live in the local market(s). This past week the Direct Kick package customers with HD capable receivers were treated to the FSN broadcast live.

Over the years, I have watched many local broadcasts live on Direct Kick that were time-delayed in the local market.

It is great to hear that in Seattle they not only are broadcasting the game live on a local network in HD, but rebroadcasting the games on a second network also in HD.

Odd, but the announcement here was that FSN was rebroadcasting what BELO already recorded. Not tha there would be another film crew working.
