FCD, the New Barcelona

March 11th, 2009 . 9:41 am . By: Buzz Carrick

The race is on to be the last team in Major League Soccer without a jersey sponsor.  There are four teams left without one: Colorado, Kansas City, New England, and FC Dallas.  Here’s the list.

Chicago Fire
Chivas USA
Colorado Rapids
None
Columbus Crew
D.C. United
FC Dallas
None
Houston Dynamo
Kansas City Wizards
None
Los Angeles Galaxy
New England Revolution
None
New York Red Bulls
Real Salt Lake
Seattle Sounders
San Jose Earthquakes
Toronto FC

The most surprising of these, the Revs, are now being rumored as getting close to one.  Colorado dropped the team name from the front of the 09 kits, considered by most a sign a sponsor is coming.

That leaves just the Kansas City Wizards, the lowest revenue team in MLS, and your own FC Dallas, who’s front office is an complete mess right now, in the race for the last sponsorship.

But you know what?  At this point let’s embrace that last team thing.  But let’s turn it around and make it a point of pride rather than embarrassment.

Dallas can be like the Barcelona of MLS and never sell a jersey ad on the kit, although Barcelona did finally give their sponsorship to a charity.

FC Dallas will be the last team to sell out to the man and pimp out their jersey for cash. Yeah, all those other teams sold out.  What a bunch of losers.

Here’s the new rallying cry…

FC Dallas, the only team to never sell out.

Ok, wait that doesn’t sound right. I need to work on the slogan.

Better to not have a sponsor than to have one from a gambling website or MLM organization.

I’d be interested to know about the Revs rumors, as I have yet to hear anything. Do you have more specific information?

Phil, sorry no. Just rumors they may be close to one.

Actually, since we don’t have a shirt sponsor right now, maybe FCD SHOULD give the spot to a charity for this year. For example, the American Heart Association national HQ is here in Dallas, as is the Boy Scouts. Either one would provide a lot of good will to FCD.

It would be cool if we put a charity on there, but FCD certainly won’t make the kind of contribution that Barca did to their charity.

They’d probably spell the company name wrong anyway.

Maybe we can get DART to sponsor the team, keeping with the bus driver theme.

actually the fact you guys don’t have a sponsor is not a bad thing ata all. i just think mls jerseys w/ the name dallas across the shirt looks horrible, or kc. colorado did the best thing possible by just droping their name of the jersey.

How much do you have to pony up to be a shirt sponsor?

  13. Comment by Dan on March 11, 2009 7:46 PM

OnGoal from the Wizards are probably solidifying a sponsor that will also be part of the SSS in progress now

Both would seem appropriate if FCD had held onto Denilson, Davino, and/or signed that drunk forward from River Plate.

Buzz, I gotta say this is surprising as no one up here in New England has heard any of these rumors. Thanks for the info.

in this economy any team could use extra money to fund maybe a reserve league or a DP or larger rosters or a higher salary cap. I don’t think anything to help mls develop is selling out.

Hey this is Dallas folks….anyone ever open up a copy of the Dallas Observer? The clear answer for sponsorship is one of the 1,072 stripper joints in this Bible Beltway of a town. Much saucier than some gambling website, and more original too.

Even funny considering the team is in Frisco. : )

FCD should try Walmart. They have deep pockets and are thriving in the recession, plus we’re the closest pro team to their HQ.

What are you hearing about the Revolution? Any idea on the sponsor or amount of money?

” the Revs, are now being rumored as getting close to one.”

The FO took your slogan wrong and applied it to attendance (we never sell out).

    Sam, nothing specific.

    Buzz,

I dont think you have a clue whats going on in the office….to say its a mess tells me you dont really know much….i personally know and see that things are going well there….things have been reorganized to operate more efficiently….time will tell but all the player needs were met in the off season and it all cost us virtually nothing….try to stay positive, the team will finally play some attractive soccer as we have got rid of the antiquated Brit coaches.
