Saragosa Out 4 to 6 Weeks

Marcelo Saragosa (Jason Gulledge, 3rd Degree)

It was a bad sign when Saragosa left Brazil early as FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman said that would only happen if they thought he would need surgery.  That surgery on his meniscus happened yesterday and as you have read from the various rehashing of the FCD press release around the internet this morning, FCD’s starting right back if out four to six weeks.

Saragosa had previous injured the same meniscus and opted for the longer recovery option that repairs the damaged area.  After re-injuring the same location when a blow to the knee in the scrimmage against Florida International, Saragosa has opted for the faster recovery option that removes the damaged portion.  The longer recovery option is usually considered better for the long term health of the player and knee, but based on comments on the FCD blog that option may not have been possible this time.

Here’s the press release…

MARCELO SARAGOSA OUT 4-6 WEEKS

FRISCO, Texas (Friday, March 6, 2009) — FC Dallas defender Marcelo Saragosa has undergone successful surgery to remove a torn medial meniscus in his right knee and will be out of action for 4-6 weeks.

Saragosa has appeared in six of eight preseason games in 2009, making five starts on the right side of the defense. The six-year MLS veteran previously had surgery on the medial meniscus in the same knee in October of 2008.

    3nOut,
I’d love to see FCD tryout Burciaga, too.
    Buzz,
Are there rules built into the MLS roster limit to allow flexibility when players go on IR? Also, I’m looking forward to your impressions of Wednesday’s game, as I wasn’t able to watch the whole thing.

Yes, I think MLS has some sort of IR policy, but it’s for a set amount of time. Something like, if player is injured, can go on IR for first 6 weeks of season and not take up a roster spot. So team could put Saragosa on IR and sign someone else, then cut someone when MS is ready to come back.

Isn’t Burciaga a left-sided player? Maybe when A. Wallace gets back he can get a shot at RB. For now slide Moor over.

Steve, I’ll get some comments on the game up today I hope.

if you put a player on IR in order to replace him it has to be a min of 6 matches out.
