Van den Bergh to FCD?

January 12th, 2009 . 12:42 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

Ives says he thinks FCD is after Dave van den Bergh.

According to multiple sources, the Red Bulls could be set to deal both Dutch winger Dave Van Den Bergh and midfielder Mike Magee in separate trades. No official word has surfaced yet but signs point to Van Den Bergh potentially being involved in a deal to FC Dallas. The Hoops have reportedly been in search of a veteran left winger and Red Bulls director Jeff Agoos and FC Dallas general manager Michael Hitchcock were seen having discussions on Sunday night.

Turns out Ives is right.  3rd Degree has been able to confirm from a MLS source that FCD has indeed been in talks with New York Red Bull about van den Bergh but a final hurdle remains but made it clear no deal is in place at this time.

You may recall that when van den Bergh first came to MLS, FC Dallas had won the discovery claim on VDB but “traded” that discovery filing to Kansas City for a filing on Kenny Cooper.  FCD knew about van den Bergh to file on him because he wanted to come to Dallas and had contacted the team.  Cooper also wanted to come to Dallas, but KC on a tip had filed on him first.  Then FCD head coach Colin Clarke preferred Cooper and in exchange let the Wizards have van den Bergh in a “swap” of filings.

So why would van den Bergh want to come to FCD?  Turns out his wife is from Dallas.  Now it appears there is a chance he will get his original wish and land with the Red Stripes.  Stay tuned cause if this deal is going to go down one would think it will happen on draft day in St Louis.

Keep in mind that many deals reach this stage and never happen.

Edit: confirmed, see main story.

Nice move potentially, really dependent on what Dallas gives up for him and how much his new deal pays him. But he is a solid crosser, surprising speed and can play left back or mid, which would solve one problem spot for Dallas. Now if we can just get Cooper to stay central, they could be a nice lil tandem

    Heard the same thing…

I was told the final hurdle is the agreement on players/picks heading the other way.

RBNY want Oduro. Dallas counter-offered McCarty and the #11 pick.

BTW, have you ever seen a year where so many clubs foolishly tipped their hand in the market?

It’s been crazy. Looks like someone at NYRB leaked this one to Ives. Mo’s been talking like crazy. LA has made it clear they are shopping the third pick and FCD has made it obvious by actions that they are offering McCarty to everyone.

Even seattle now seems to be letting it be known they are willing to move the 1.

Lots of talking going on but so far not a ton of action.

    woohoo!

Obviously it depends on the price, but I would love to see Van Den Bergh for Dallas.

As much as I love McCarty, I don’t see him getting much playing time under Hyndman.

Slowly, every player I have loved to watch in Hoops has left the team.

If our Front Office is dumb enough to trade somebody like Avi for a 33-year old Left mid then somebody needs to tell Hitch that he looks like the pillsbury dough boy and needs to let somebody that knows about the game take over

  8. Comment by Wes on January 12, 2009 2:14 pm

That 33 year old left-mid was one of the best players in the league last year IMO

I’d hate to see Oduro go. You can’t train up that kind of speed. Oh, and if KC exits this summer and JC ever loses the keys to the rejuvenation machine… Yikes.

I’d also hate to see Oduro go, but IF we sign another speedy forward under age 28 or so, I’d be willing to part with him for VDB. Might also be nice if Zakuani fell to us, but really, I’d need at least one both to happen before I’d let our third forward leave, when I can’t even think of who our fourth would be. Watson?

VDB would certainly be a great acquisition for this team.

I think you guys would need to offer more than Oduro. Van den Bergh was the second best midfielder in the league on points last year behind Steve Ralston.

    Oduro isn’t nearly his class.

  13. Comment by Media Man on January 12, 2009 4:12 pm

    @Eugene:

Here’s the reason RBNY want Oduro - productive, speedy striker that only made $33k last year.

RBNY wouldn’t just be getting Oduro, they’d be getting a whole lot of cap space as well.

  14. Comment by the other Eugene on January 12, 2009 4:25 pm

Oduro doesn’t even start for you

  15. Comment by the other Eugene on January 12, 2009 4:30 pm

    @Media Man:

But what would they do for left wing? Rojas can’t play D like Van den Bergh does and NY has Kandji as a speedy striker — unless you’re going to say that Kandji is gone. Oduro would have to come in at left wing and he hasn’t even locked down that spot for you guys.

What does NY plan to do with that extra cap space?

  16. Comment by Eugene on January 12, 2009 4:33 pm

I agree with you, Media Man. Oduro’s been improving each year and still has a lot of upside. Plus, he’s crazy fast. Watching him break into a dead sprint is one of my favorite sights as an FCD fan. I can see why RBNY want him, because his skills complement Angel’s very well.

FCD could use a veteran like VDB, but I wonder how long he’ll be effective in MLS at his age.

  17. Comment by Haig on January 12, 2009 5:05 pm

Van Den Burgh’s game doesn’t depend on the kinds of things that age diminishes dramatically. His defensive play is based on positioning and anticipation, and he relies on smart, well timed passes more than speed. If he were to stay healthy, he has another two or three good years.

As important, he’s a true professional, a leader and a class act. I don’t think Dallas would be disappointed with him, even if they were to give up Oduro AND a draft pick.

Frankly I think it’s a stupid move by NY. That’s a big cap hit, but realistically, VDB was the best player on the team last year. We’ll see how badly Agoos plays this.

  18. Comment by Media Man on January 12, 2009 5:25 pm

    @eugene

First, I don’t support FC Dallas, just Buzz Carrick.

Oduro will provide RBNY a terrific option off the bench. Angel and a yet-to-be-acquired striker will start.

New York has a lot of cap space, so expect signings.

  19. Comment by tonytdc on January 12, 2009 8:45 pm

f’n ehh… as a rbny supporter, i feel like agoos is about to bend me over and, well, you know. enjoy the vdb to cooper connection. vdb is exactly the player that can/should truly be cheered for loudly in mls.

Wow another midfielder to FCD, what a great move (I hope you can sense the sarcasm)

  21. Comment by Easton FC on January 13, 2009 12:58 am

Uh, christian, there is no sarcasm to be had here. Left winger was a position we needed in the offseason and van den Bergh would be the best we’ve had in that position in a long time.

I think that leaves a star CAM, CB, and a potential back-up ST that FCD will need to complete SH’s vision.

Quite happy that Dave was signed. Welcome aboard, Flying Dutchman! And as for Oduro, I hope you break into RBNY’s starting line-up soon. (Probably already has, by default…)

  22. Comment by Kevin Z on January 13, 2009 9:42 am

YES! I can’t think of anyone in MLS, I’d rather have running that left side. And now KCJ can crack 20 goals and fetch a decent price when he leaves.

  23. Comment by skippy on January 15, 2009 10:21 pm

vdB’s age shouldnt factor into this, the comments from before that his game does not depend on youth is accurate. Rarely does he have a bad touch, can hit a cross from any angle, can score as well. Kenny Cooper shoudl be thanking someone from this. Remember, Angel scores a lot of goals on crosses…
