Some Important Dates

January 23rd, 2009 . 12:51 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

Sometimes during the season we lose track of the important dates that apply to rules and regulation.  MLS has a page with most of them on there.  But I’ll reproduce the important ones here with some FCD dates mixed in.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s stupid that salaries become guaranteed prior to the roster freeze?

Important Dates

January 15 – Spring MLS Transfer Window opens.

January 31 – FCD intersquad scrimmage (10 AM PHP)

February 6 – FCD @ Houston preseason

February 9 - Houston @ FCD preseason

February 11 - World Cup Qualifier: USA vs Mexico

February 16 to 22nd - FCD training and playing games in Sunrise, Florida.

February 25 to March 6 – FCD in Brazil.  USA-Brail Challenge Game 1.  In previous season FCD has made roster cut downs prior to leaving for Brazil as the MLS roster compliance day come mid-trip.

March 2 – MLS roster and cap compliance day.  Will FCD make cuts prior to going to Brazil?

March 3 – MLS waiver draft.

March 6 to 15 - CONCACAF US U20 Championships in Trinidad and Tobago.

Mid March – Probable date for Pioneer Cup and Rio Grande Plate Game 1

March 19 – MLS First Kick, 2009 season starts.  Various report indicate this will be the expansion announcement date also.

March 21 – Most MLS teams open play.  Brimstone Cup Game 1

March 23 – Waiver cap charge date.  First day a senior player can be waived without taking a penalty.  Any player on a MLS roster past the end of 2008 waiver date that is released prior to this date incurs a salary cap penalty.  The idea is to prevent any MLS team from hording a player over the winter they know they won’t need for the next season.

March 28 - World Cup Qualifier: USA at El Salvador

April 1 - World Cup Qualifier: USA vs T&T

April 15 – Spring MLS Transfer Window closes.

April 21 to May 9 - CONCACAF U17 Championships in Tijana Mexico.

June 1 – College protected list finalized.  These are players picked by MLS teams that they don’t sign.  MLS teams holds MLS rights on said players for two seasons.

June 3 - World Cup Qualifier: USA at Costa Rica

June 6 - World Cup Qualifier: USA vs Honduras

June 15 to 21 – Confederations Cup for US National Team

June 24 – Rosters due to league office for roster guarantee date.

July 1 - Roster guarantee date, all MLS contracts are now guaranteed for the remainder of the year.  Any player waived after this date must be paid in full and their salary will remain on the cap.

Early July – Likely MLS All-Star Game window.

July 3 to 26 – CONCACAF Gold Cup

July 15 - Fall MLS Transfer Window opens.

August 12 - World Cup Qualifier: USA at Mexico

August 14 – Fall MLS Transfer Window closes.

September 5 - World Cup Qualifier: USA vs El Salvador

September 9 - World Cup Qualifier: USA at T&T

September 15 - Roster Freeze Date.  All MLS rosters are not frozen through the end of the regular season, playoffs, and MLS Cup.

October 10 - World Cup Qualifier: USA at Honduras

October 14 - World Cup Qualifier: USA vs Costa Rica

Late October - MLS Cup Playoffs.

November – MLS Cup

Hey Buzz – thanks for this. Since this provides a high level overview of impotant ’soccer dates’ for the entire year you should make it a menu item on the left hand side and keep it updated!

With the Houston home/away Feb 6 and 9, the USA game on the 11 looks to pull some guys from the preseason games. Hopefully Cooper is at the USA game and not the FCD game.
