McCarty Home in Florida
January 21st, 2009 . 5:01 pm . By: Buzz CarrickYou may have noticed by now that Dax McCarty has not arrived in Dallas for spring training. After further investigation it turns out he’s down home in Florida. FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman says it’s the team’s decision that McCarty has not returned to Dallas. “Dax McCarty does have an excused absence,” said Hyndman. “It just wasn’t a great situation for me last year with Dax and it wasn’t a great situation for him with me. One of the things that Dax asked me is that he wanted to be traded. We are giving Dax the opportunity to be evaluated and be traded by someone. So he’s not here mostly because of my request.” With the SuperDraft having passed there may be less of a market than before for McCarty’s services. Teams tend to take a wait and see attitude on what they got from the draft and other transactions. Hyndman says McCarty still has value and a bright future. “He’s a young player. He’s a skillful player. I never want to say he’s not a good player. I don’t think we see things the same. I want the best for this young player because I think he does have a future in MLS soccer. I just don’t know if his future will be here.” Asking McCarty to stay in Florida is an interesting decision as it makes it clear the player isn’t part of the plans in Dallas. Will it effect the price FCD will get for the young midfielder and at what point will Hyndman cut bait and recall his want-away midfielder? 36 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

The real question is “who is doing spring training in Florida this year”? Do you think that loaning Dax out would be an option?
Personally, I’d love to see him with my Revs.
I really appreciate how open Schellas is with tough matters like this. Sometimes coach and player just don’t see eye to eye, through no fault of either party.
Hopefully Dax can find a team that better fits him soon.
The talent bleed continues….Ruiz, ROB, Goodson, Toja, Mulroony, Alvarez, Nunez, Gbandi, Johnson, Gibbs, and so on. We definitely have a negative talent flow regardless of why players have left Dallas. Doesn’t happen in NE or Houston and the results show it.
It would be good for SH to just cut him lose then for whatever value he could get. As I understand it, teams are interested in Dax but Dallas hasn’t liked the offers its received.
Its really not doing the right thing by the player to tell him to stay home while simultaneously not accepting offers on him.
I don’t see SH trading him just for allocation or any pick that is not a guaranted top 5,10! B4 I was expecting him to be traded for a defender but looks like SH not shopping that anymore and there is no “good” midfielders on the market that SH wants(maybe gomes but I don’t think SH is into him at all)
So I expect this dax thing to turn “ugly”
My bet is that a deal goes down in the next 72 hours or Dax would be in camp. Sitting at home makes no since for either party unless a deal was close at hand.
Good for Dax. If he wants to be an attacking midfielder then so be it. SH wanted him to be something that he isn’t…a CDM. I hope Dax talks some sense into Brek too. I love FCD but I’d also love to see those boys plying their trade with the Nats one day and SH doesn’t have the time to help his team and their Nat career right now.
well, there’s 2 things you can do if you’re in his position:
1. do what the coach asks you to do despite your opposition
2. don’t participate/ sit out
…i know SH mentioned for him to stay home, but i’m sure the feeling was mutual. what are the chances that he would’ve came? anyways, new year…new team…hopefully.
It is too bad that the Dax situation did not work out. Hopefully he will have success at the next team. Dax, you were money in the Olympic qualifiers in Tampa. Good luck
Dax is a ******. . . . . .

please try and refrain from cussing.
Every MLS team has the flexibility to have 18-20 players on the senior roster. Odds are that Dallas will be on the short end of that because of the 5 GA players who don’t count on the roster. I expect that most teams will keep an 18 or 19 player senior roster so that come mid-season they can add a player in the transfer window and not have to cut anybody.
So, even if a move can’t be made immediately, I would suspect that Dallas will have an open spot to carry Dax on the roster through the first half of the season.
i know there’s another thread of this, but what if colorado reduces it’s asking price for christian gomez? packaging dax, wally and SOME allocation money (which i’m sure we’ve got plenty to spare) might be enough. those guys, apparently, don’t seem to fit the plans. wally has been here for 3 years, and probably wouldn’t be able to beat out pablo, wally, VDB. of course, that is if gomez still has gas in the tank left. at least he was well rested for this upcoming year.
* i meant wally may not be able to beat out blake wagner
This is why we are seeing more young US players give europe a try. Dax, Wally, Shea…. MLS is a career ender for a vast majority of our young american players. Wally has been here 3yrs and played how many games? How many reserve games? Wait they don’t have a reserve league anymore..

This kid has been good in the MLS when given opportunities. I hope he goes somewhere where he gets a chance to play, even if that’s outside MLS.
I’d kind of like to see him give the MFL a try.
During one of the home games toward the end of the season, my wife nudged me to look at Schellas and Dax screaming at each other on the sideline. I knew at that point that he probably wouldn’t be back.
I know the guy is adored by people around here (including my wife, *shudder*), but I think I’d rather see us win with some sort of game plan in place. If Dax doesn’t fit, he has to go. Good luck to him in the future.
we just lost our #10. I dont know if you guys watched the olimpic qualifyign tournament. dax played his position which is a creative mid. and he was great i dont think that the us has another player that can play that position the way dax can. he knows when to hold and when to pass from the central mid. position. san jose just got their #10.
I just don’t think that SH quite knows what he is doing. I have questioned his judgment on some of his other player choices.
Dax could certainly help this team. Every time I saw him play the past year he was very consistent and just looks like a player who needs to be allowed more time to play. To me, he deserved the opportunity that was given to Bruno, but hey what do I know.
My guess is Dax will go somewhere else and it will end up biting us in the behind.
Now Ives is reporting that Dax has been dealt to San Jose for a conditional draft pick. Low value, but that’s pretty much what I expected at this point. Once again, good luck Dax.
Soccer by Ives just reported that Dax is on his way to rejoin Alvarez in San Jose:
http://www.soccerbyives.net/so...dallas-deals-mccarty.html#more
He says it’s for a conditional pick.
Buzz, have you heard any specifics on this?
Wow.. San Jose got a great deal if that is all we got out of it.
For me, it’s hard to see how Dax can fit any system. He’s too small and not physical enough to play Defensive mid. He’s too slow to play wing. His decision making on the field is good when he has time, but he takes too much time to do so. He gets knocked off the ball alot.
Morrow said he needed to improve his core strength. One reason Morrow might have went to the 3-5-2 was to allow Dax to play as a 2nd D-mid, a role he might have handled.
Personally, I think he was a star at lower levels of competition, but will not be successful as a full time starter in MLS.
I know that dax probably did not fit with SH system and that we are going to have to continue dealing with player loss but I almost think we should stop drafting players that are not Seniors. They do not work out here. We sent Ibrahim to TFC last year, Dax is gone this year, Brek is not likely to fit in as SH is moving him around to try and find a spot. Lambo is not likely to play for several more years. All of those are young players that we have picked and not gotten anything out of in time they are hear. Something has got to change. If SH leaves in a season or two will John or Peri get shipped out for nothing because they do not fit? Sorry just some frustrated ramblings.
Also, a “Conditional Draft Pick” could mean anything. We traded Nunez for a 3 that would turn into a 1 if he met certain playing time goals – he didn’t (although ric would have us believe he’s an all-star). We trade Ibrahim for a 2nd that could turn into a 1 in 2010 based on what happens his year. So, depending on the terms of the agrrement, if Dax pans out in SJ we might end up with good value. I doubt he’ll pan out.
Hopefully it’s a 2 that could turn into a 1. If that’s the case, depending on how things happen in ‘09, FCD could be sitting in a Toronto-esque situation in the 2010 SuperDraft.
makelele isnt the biggest, or toughest, or most physical……but he sure does handle opposing mids with ease. not that Dax is on his level, but thats the player that Dax reminds me of most in how they both kind of glide around the field unnoticed until the end of the game and he’s MotM.
At roughly noon today I had a talk with Schellas about how They hadn’t gotten the value they wanted for Dax and how he might or might not work his way back into good graces.
So while it’s possible this deal went down this morning, I doubt it did without Schellas knowing. Which also doesn’t mean it won’t go down later.

Schellas is so funny. Dax has been wanting to be traded since Schellas first stepped foot into FCD.
It kills how Shellas claims he made the decision for Dax to stay in FL. What a load of crap, Dax refused to come to preseason training b/c he wanted to be traded.
Shellas begged him to stay but he didn’t. Schellas just told you that Buzz to save face.
Tinny, It wasn’t just Schellas that told me he asked Dax to stay in Florida. I had that information from annother party before I got the Hyndman quotes.
what gets me trade requests were refused in the fall while McCarty was on the bench; we won’t trade you but we won’t play you is an interesting message to send to a player, especially of McCarty’s caliber
to be honest, this kinda makes dax look bad. look at avi…he’s in the same boat as dax, but he didn’t pout & b*tch up and down the sideline. both have talent…avi was slated to go #1 in the draft last year. plus, he was replaced by bruno who practically got off the coach to start over him. i’m sure he was upset at the lack of PT, but it seems to me avi has it in his mind to work hard and be what SH expects from him.
dax obviously has ruined the cardinal rule, the coach makes the decisions, no player is the coach. if the value is there someone will take him or not
