FC Dallas Signs Steve Purdy
January 14th, 2009 . 3:24 pm . By: Buzz CarrickFC Dallas has announced they have signed Ex-Cal center back Steve Purdy. The 6′4″ Purdy graduated from Cal in 2006 after starting four straight year for the Bears. Selected for the MLS Combine, Purdy never showed up, instead opting to sign with 1860 Munich in Germany’s Bundesliga 2. Purdy is big and fast and will in all likelihood fill Duilio Davino’s spot in the FCD back line. Purdy was drafted by the LA Galaxy despite his pending signing in the hope he might return to MLS. LA seems to have let their claim lapse and FCD has signed the 23 year old Purdy with a discovery. Purdy played at Cal for head coach Kevin Grimes. Grimes played for Schellas Hyndman at SMU. It’s fairly easy to see the connection that drew Purdy to Dallas. 22 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

good size. seems to be able to play if a team in germany was interested. is he the type to come in and start right away?
In theory yes.
Trying to find some stats on the guy… when did he last play for 1860?
I love a breaking news story with a scoop from Buzz – thanks!!!
Gotta give credit to FCD on this one Chaz, it was on their blog first. They kept it very quiet cause of the LA factor. I know about it but could never get it on the record. So on this one I’m just adding soe falvor.
Buzz,
I played against this kid at the national training center in SoCal my freshman year at Cal State Fullerton – He is the real deal, with the athleticism start and do well. Hopefully this means we can now trade some of our draft picks and get Zakuani to play with KCJ
Yes, this is a great under the radar sigining. FCD defense just got bigger, faster, and stronger. Some grit and toughness added too.
Indubitably. How do you think this affects our approach in the draft Buzz?? I still think we need a burner like Seabrook or White with our second first round pick
it wont change much cause FCD knew this was coming. They are looking for a least one striker. Maybe two. Perhaps wide mid or D backups.
I would think this would make FCD lean towand Rodney Wallace if they stay at #5 dont you Buzz? Unless Goff is on to something about C. Gomez?
This can’t be what it might at first appear to be. How many matches did Purdy play for 1860 first team? Probably very few if any. If he could really cut it in the Bundesliga and make the average of maybe $500-750K per season there’s no way he comes to Dallas. We are likely getting a big guy with some unrealized potential and that’s all. Tap the brakes on the immediate start and stuff.
I wonder if this means Dallas will loosen their grip on Serioux, i dont blame them if they dontm just hopefully is all
Here’s to hoping we don’t get Christian Gomez!
Does this affect Dallas’ interest in Gonzalez like Ives thinks? Or not?
OMY – why would signing a central defender make the team more willing to let Adrian go? If they signed a top-end right fullback, I could see your point…..
Uh Doug… I believe Gonzalez has already decided to go back to school, so we couldn’t have gotten him anyway…
Either that, or he’s FINISHING classes just in time for tomorrow. Man, I feel so lost when it comes to the draft…
Gonzalez is still entering the 2009 MLS draft.

So, now that we have that out of the way [;-)], back to the original question – does the move for Purdy lessen FCD’s interest in Gonzalez?
Moor, Purdy, Pitch, Shea and Gonzalez – probably one too many central defenders and outside Drew, while there is a lot of athleticism, there is very little experience.
I guess if he was picked in 2007 his college protected list rights expired on 12/31/08.
Nice pick up and addresses a key need for FCD>
Jon, no I do not. They have both Wagner and Wallace. Another kid at left back isn’t going to help.
ric, Purdy was captain of the 1860 reserves and made their bench. No he’s not a superstar, but the idea is that he should be a starting at some point this year.
OMY, why would this effect Serioux?
Doug, FCD likes Omar but they were never interested in drafting him. Signing a defender has been the plan all along. They weren’t trying to move up to get him.
Easton, Omar isn’t going back to school as in not going pro. He just went back to Maryland to go to class. He’s already signed a contract.
thanks for clearing that up, buzz…
