Oduro to Red Bull for van den Bergh

January 12th, 2009 . 4:43 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

Oduro Scores (Rags Gardner, RII)

3rd Degree has been able to confirm with a MLS source that a trade for Dave van den Bergh of New York Red Bulls has indeed gone down.  Dominic Oduro will be going the other way.  We don’t have any details yet and don’t know if there are other pieces included in the move.  Van den Bergh will immediately fill the left midfield void FCD had with the non-renewal of Victor Sikora.

Edit: Details are beginning to emerge.  3rd Degree has learned FCD has sent two unknown picks to NY in the deal with one unknown pick coming back.  Dave van den Bergh will be signing a new deal with FC Dallas.

Edit 2:  It’s been annouced and FCD is sending the #18 pick to NY and then swapping the #11 pick for the #14 pick.

One has to think it likely that some other piece may be going with Oduro to the Red Bulls, whether it be picks or some allocation money.  Although Oduro is significantly cheaper and younger than van den Bergh and clearing cap room ay be a priority for Red Bull.  Last year Oduro made $33,000 playing for FC Dallas, van den Bergh had a base of $240,000 with incentives that could be much higher.  Red Bulls originally acquired van den Bergh from Kansas City in 2007 in exchange for third round pick in 2007 MLS Supplemental Draft

You may recall that when van den Bergh first came to MLS, FC Dallas had won the discovery claim on VDB but “traded” that discovery filing to Kansas City for a filing on Kenny Cooper.  FCD knew about van den Bergh to file on him because he wanted to come to Dallas and had contacted the team.  Cooper also wanted to come to Dallas, but KC on a tip had filed on him first.  Then FCD head coach Colin Clarke preferred Cooper and in exchange let the Wizards have van den Bergh in a “swap” of filings.  So why would van den Bergh want to come to FCD?  Turns out his wife is from Dallas.

And there goes one of my favorite sights as an FCD fan. I’ll miss your dead sprints, Dom.

I like this. I was impressed with van den Berg last season, and he seemed dangerous. And maybe Oduro will get more playing time, which he really needs.

    Good job, FCD!
    :)

*sigh* I’m beginning to believe I put some sort of jinx on my favorite Hoops: Morrow, Wags, Yi, Toja, now Oduro… Anybody want to nominate a player to be my new favorite? (No, I won’t root for Guarda/Saragosa/etc just to see them go…)

  4. Comment by emilio on January 12, 2009 5:30 PM

yOU GUYS GOT A GREAT PLAYER AND PRO IN VAN DEN BERGH.

  5. Comment by steponhens on January 12, 2009 6:10 PM

This is a great move by Dallas. Van den Bergh is one of the best midfielders in MLS and should allow Hyndman to play his preferred formation. I am not a fan of Hyndman but if he’s going to be here for awhile you might as well let him do his thing. DVB was one of my favorite players to watch the past few years and while Oduro was a nice piece I would prefer to have a 90 minute player over a super sub.

  6. Comment by Media Man on January 12, 2009 6:15 PM

My source speculates (does not know) the following…

    FCD: DvdB and #29 pick

RBNY: Oduro, #11 pick, #18 pick

Swap of players; Swap of second rounders; First round pick to NY.

  7. Comment by ric on January 12, 2009 6:35 PM

Basically a salary cap move , NY saves cap and FCD gets a real player.

  8. Comment by the other Eugene on January 12, 2009 6:45 PM

Wow, when one side likes the deal and the other does not …

  9. Comment by Chase on January 12, 2009 7:08 PM

I certainly hope we’re not giving them the 11th and 18th picks

  10. Comment by the other Eugene on January 12, 2009 7:26 PM

    @Media Man

Dallas has two second round picks, do you know if it was #18 or #27?

  11. Comment by RBNY fan on January 12, 2009 8:41 PM

I am a huge RBNY fan and have been for a few years, and I can tell you that you are getting a great player. If this deal is true, he is worth your first round picks. Van den Bergh will give 100% for 90 minutes every game and is tactically very sharp.

  12. Comment by Matt on January 12, 2009 9:04 PM

As a RBNY fan I’m sickened. Easily our most consistent player the past two seasons, even though he’s been played all over the field. Dallas got a steal here.

Dom was one of my favorite players for FCD, he had consistently great hustle, pace, effort, and even growth as a better smarter player. You’ll be missed Dom, sorry NY fans if you’re sickened but you won’t be disappointed – Doms a great player and he’ll hopefully get even better with the starting time in ny.

  15. Comment by Steve on January 13, 2009 5:47 AM

Sweet! I liked Oduro’s speed, but his finishing was horrid at times. Van Den Burgh has always impressed. If FCD ends up keeping the #5 pick, this is a huge win. The other picks were only useful as trade pieces anyway, because FCD already has lots of youngsters to build on.

  16. Comment by Mr. Baker on January 13, 2009 6:06 AM

This is a good trade for Dallas. Oduro has potential and is younger but vdB is a proven pro. Looks like a pretty obvious salary dump by RB…

  17. Comment by 3nOut on January 13, 2009 6:54 AM

wow…just wow! for once we were actually able to get a better player in return as opposed to getting fleeced. dave VDB was consistently one of the most dangerous NYRB. this will totally improve the team by a mile. we will finally be getting consistent crosses to the box. all of a sudden, things don’t look so gloomy around these parts.

You got a class player…on and off the field. Good Luck VDB!!! Hopefully Odura pan out….

  21. Comment by soccerroo on January 13, 2009 10:22 AM

Let’s hope VDB is able to continue at last years level. My question is who is now the player we use If Cooper leaves this winter or summer? right now that leaves us with Jamie Watson and Andrew Daniels as back up forwards.

  22. Comment by Liverpool_SC on January 13, 2009 10:43 AM

Cooper and Richetti could be pretty tickled if VDB comes in the same salary class as he has enjoyed the last few seasons and the front office runs out of scratch for new contracts.

Otherwise an excellent piece of business that should allow Hyndman to have a team with the width he clamors for.

  23. Comment by Chase on January 13, 2009 11:42 AM

According to Ives, we will send the 11 and 18th but we’ll be getting their first at #14

  24. Comment by Zipinparadise on January 13, 2009 1:31 PM

I think this is a major rip-off deal for Hyndman and the Hoops. DVB is an all-star mid. Was wondering, will this mean more PT for Sinisa Ubiparipovic?

  25. Comment by Toffee on January 13, 2009 1:49 PM

    Nice move FCD.

    I said something positive.

  26. Comment by Steve on January 13, 2009 1:53 PM

    Buzz,
You’ve stayed jouranlistically neutral on this one so far. What do you think? Or are you waiting for other trades to hit before or during the draft to analyze everything together?

Is DvB under contract for ‘09, yet? If not, what do you expect the cap hit to be?

I don’t think you guys will lack for forwards if you pick up Felix Garcia. Just keep in mind that he performed better with the U-20s than Peri Marosevic, who has been tearing up (RELATIVELY) the combine.

  29. Comment by kevin on January 13, 2009 2:15 PM

The only reason you trade a young and cheap player for an old and expensive one is that you think you can win now. That is stupid.

My kids wanted to go to the games before to see Dom (he is a huge fav with the kids…he comes to every camp and will play ball with them). If Cooper goes…then that is it…i have almost no reason left to go to the games.

Who thinks this team is now a winner? Did anyone think we were one player away? Dom was loved, cheap and fun to watch.

I am glad for him – he will finally get some play time – but Dallas is not better off for this trade. As LA about expensive old guys…

  30. Comment by Easton FC on January 13, 2009 3:21 PM

Ken, please calm down about this. Understand that youth and fun aren’t necessarily what make a winning team.

Sure, he was a fan favorite of sorts (I’ll miss Birdman a lot) but getting van den Bergh was a must, considering we need a starting left winger now. He has some value at that position and along with Rocha at the other wing spot, we could have a very balanced and lethal attack force with Cooper and Cunningham up front.

All that is left for the club to look for is a CB and a #10 playmaker. (Ze Roberto, Ze Roberto, Ze Ro- hey, I can dream, can I?)

  31. Comment by Easton FC on January 13, 2009 3:22 PM

I meant Kevin, not Ken. (don’t worry, it wasn’t an insult, anyway…)

  32. Comment by Chazsoccer on January 13, 2009 4:01 PM

    My little dream:
Serioux to TFC (good for him, good for TFC)

FCD gets #2 and some allocation $$

Trade #2 and ? to Chigoons for Conde

Everybody wins – Chi gets the pick they want, FCD gets a solid, experienced CB – who has played with some FCD players before (bonus: he is Colombian – they do well here)

Oscar Pareja used to play with Conde’s father (another tie that binds)

Conde would love to come to Dallas, as would his family.

*bursting bubble* oh well, it was fun to dream……

  33. Comment by phil on January 13, 2009 4:25 PM

Good deal… + he is tall and we need someone for our crosses and free kicks that can head the ball
But the best part is that he is a US Citizen…. so it means he wont count in the int slot…

  34. Comment by Big B on January 13, 2009 6:02 PM

I like the trade on a number of fronts. It was clear by the end of last season that Oduro would not get significant playing time under SH. So Oduro is probably in a better place. FCD gets a left sided player that will fit well in SH’s system and frees up an international spot. Assuming FCD doesn’t wreck the cap and didn’t give up all its picks, good move.

  35. Comment by Buzz Carrick on January 13, 2009 8:08 PM

I like the deal. Dom’s not exactly young anymore and while he’s a great bench threat, FCD basically swapped a back up for a starter. Left mids don’t grow on trees and while VDB isn’t a spring chicken he did play at a high level and he really wants to be in Dallas.

The swap down in picks isn’t a problem cause there are quite a few solid players in this one, none of whom will start in season one anyway. Also giving up the second rounder is no problem as roster room was short.

Overall a good bit of business. VDB is supposed to sign a new deal with FCD this week I hear. Hopefully with a home town discount.

Signs are pointing to 2 to 3 more players inbound this spring.

  36. Comment by Bubbles on January 13, 2009 8:26 PM

    Buzz,
Dom is not as old as you make him out to be he’s only 23, that’s still young.
But overall I am glad the trade took place SH didn’t want Dom anyway and NY has been fighting for him since last year.
I know Dom will do very well in NY, congrats!

  37. Comment by Buzz Carrick on January 13, 2009 8:31 PM

That’s exactly how old I think he is. He turns 24 this year. That’s not young in soccer terms.

  38. Comment by Bubbles on January 13, 2009 9:19 PM

Whatever Buzz. Great article but I think you need to get a clue seriously.
In all the articles you have published you have never said anything positive about Oduro.
Anyway I know after this comment you are going to post something else b/c ppl like you always have to get the last word.
    Have fun!

  39. Comment by SteveToro on January 13, 2009 9:46 PM

Oh, Bubbles… leave Buzz alone. Yes, trading a 23 (soon to be 24) year-old for a 32 (soon to be 33) year-old is trading potential for proven track-record. Yes, Oduro has tons of speed, potential, moxie, and a je ne sais quoi (that’s French for why can’t he finish?). Van den Bergh is tall, can cross, and is at the tail-end of what is considered by most to be a fab career. Oduro may or may not pan out. Van den Bergh may or may not have something left in him to contribute to FCD. That’s why we play the games.

  40. Comment by Eugene on January 13, 2009 9:53 PM

    @Bubbles:

Buzz has said plenty of good things about Oduro over the years, and the fact that you haven’t seen any of them makes you appear incompetent at best. It’s pretty easy to search 3rd Degree’s archive.

Your last post was obnoxious and rude, and completely unappreciative of the huge amount of work Buzz puts in for us FCD fans. Please leave.

  41. Comment by Buzz Carrick on January 13, 2009 9:54 PM

Bubbles, You called me out on a piece of information. I explained it. What did you expect me to do? Ignore you attempting to correct me when I knew what I said was right in the first place? Of course I was and am going to respond. I own the site.

And I frequently said nice things about Dom. Here’s one…
    http://www.3rddegree.net/2008/...hrenheit-expansion-draft-2008/
from my suggested expansion draft protected list just a couple months ago.

I’m sorry your favorite player got traded.

  42. Comment by Chase on January 13, 2009 10:05 PM

Haha Buzz – prime response. Especially the last sentence (”I own the site”).

On a different note, I think this team could be one of the best in the league, I just hope our ignorant GM doesn’t hold us back from fulfilling our potential. (I’m sorry, everytime I hear anything come out of Hitchcock’s mouth it confirms my suspicion that he does not know A THING about the sport. Maybe management, but not soccer.)

  43. Comment by Kevin Z on January 14, 2009 8:15 AM

Dallas has been one of the most talented teams in my mind for the last few years, but the pieces have to fit. I love this deal because FCD managed to likely upgrade the talent level while fulfilling a need. I don’t expect deals like this to keep falling in their laps, but at least they had the good sense to not mess it up. I hope FCD can find a good suitor for Dax that has an extra center back or some allocation they can use to go get a center back. He’s a class player and I wish him the best.

  44. Comment by Kevin Z on January 14, 2009 8:46 AM

I actually think McCarty would do well in Mexico. They covet clean passers and the tackling would not be as tough as MLS.

  45. Comment by Steve on January 14, 2009 10:48 AM

Ives just posted that FCD may trade Dax and a draft pick (maybe the #5) for the first pick. In the same article he also mentioned that Chivas are starting to unload Bornstein. Maybe Dax and Bornstein can switch the orientation of their red strip jerseys?

  46. Comment by Buzz Carrick on January 14, 2009 12:35 PM

Several teams have expressed interest in Dax. and Chivas is shopping Bornstein,

  47. Comment by Tinny on January 14, 2009 8:24 PM

    Buzz,
Do you happen to know if FCD is going to send another one of the players to NY with Dom? I heard a rumor about it but I don’t know if it’s true.

  48. Comment by marco4 on January 15, 2009 8:17 AM

To “kevin” re: “The only reason you trade a young and cheap player for an old and expensive one is that you think you can win now. That is stupid.”

No, kevin, what that is is a lousy comparison. It would be one thing if the two players you speak of played the exact same position and filled the exact same need. They do not. One is a backup forward. The other will be a starting wide midfielder. FCD should be very much better for this trade, for many reasons already noted here.

Good luck to Dom in the future, but this is a good deal for FCD now – and that is what matters to most of us here: the best interests of the team. If you’re only going to games because some of the guys play ball with your kids, then that’s too bad. Your prerogative, though. But count me as one who’s more concerned with the team than with individuals.
