Wagenfuhr Career Ended by Injury

Concussions end the Creighton grads playing days.

David Wagenfuhr (John Rivera, Captured View)FC Dallas has lost a valuable role player and journeyman defender as David Wagenfuhr has seen his career ended by the concussion symptoms he continues to suffer.  “It’s just to risky for me and my family,” Wagenfuhr said when reached by phone.  Wagenfuhr suffered four concussions in roughly a two year span and the last one left lingering problems for him.

It’s unfortunate that a player with a long MLS career ahead of him has had his playing days cut short by injury.  Wagenfuhr for the last three seasons has won the left back job coming out of spring training only to be injured each time.

Concussions continue to be a high profile problem in soccer and is of particular concern in many youth circles.  Ross Paule, Josh Gros, and Wagenfuhr have had their career ended via concussions in the last few years.  Taylor Twellman missed the last half of the Revolution season and could also be in danger.

Having studied to obtain his real-estate license while as a player to prepare for his next career, Wagenfuhr and his family have moved to Colorado to begin the next phase of their lives.

Wagenfuhr was the last remaining player from the Dallas Burn days having been drafted with the first pick in the fourth round by Colin Clarke back in 2004.  At Creighton, Wagenfuhr was a Semi-finalists for the Herman Trophy.

Sorry his career ended this way but glad he is hanging it up before it gets any worse.

God bless you Wag’s. You have bigger things to do in life than kick a silly ball. Good luck in all future endeavors.

Best of luck to the wagon leader. He was my favorite defender of the Clarke era.

Feel bad for him, because he’d really taken his game to another level right up until that injury… but I wish him and his family the very best.

Maybe a minor point, but only playing with one team for his entire career – even though shortened – excludes him from the “journeyman” category. Journeyman… think Andy Williams, who’s on his 6th MLS team.

All the best, Wags, for a happy, healthy future.
