Off Season Calendar

November 16th, 2008 . 9:45 am . By: Buzz Carrick

It’s shaping up to be a winter of great change in Dallas, Coach Schellas Hyndman certainly has a level of discontent with the current team.    Our prediction of his plan and what Hyndman might do we aired a while back, but when it might happen could also be an important question.  So per request I’ve put together a little schedule of the winter activities and key dates.

Keep in mind MLS and FCD can and do change dates, which means this calendar is at best a guide line and is not written in stone.

2008 Off Season Calendar

November 12th - Final wrap up scrimmage.  Last chance for players to make an impression on Hyndman before he starts looking for new bodies.
- Exit interviews start for players leaving town when coaches will tell players where they are in the plan, if they will be waived, and/or if their contract will be picked up or renewed.

November 13-14 - Exit physicals for players

November 15-23 - US U20s go to Madrid Spain. Josh Lambo, Anthony Wallace (U20 Cptn.), and FCD Juniors’ midfielder Josh Hernandez are all in the team. The U.S. will play friendlies against reserve teams from Real Madrid (Nov. 19), Athletico Madrid (Nov. 20) and Rayo Vallecano (Nov 22).

November 17-18 - Exit interviews conclude.

November 17-23 - MLS Ownership, competition, and rules committees meet during MLS Cup week.  Generation adidas players graduated, dates for 2009 announced, rules changes announced, etc, etc.  Sometimes an expansion team even gets announced.

November 21st - MLS Waiver day (?), there is usually one the Friday before the expansion draft lists are submitted.  In the past, any player on your roster after this waiver that does not make your opening day ‘09 roster insures a salary cap penalty.  ($5000)

November 23rd, 3:30 PM ET - MLS Cup, Home Depot Center.
- MLS trade window usually opens after the game for moves before expansion lists are due (?).

November 24th, 3 PM - Deadline for expansion draft protected list.  Available list of players sent to media afterward.

November 26th - The 2008 MLS Expansion Draft to stock the roster of the Seattle Sounders, the 15th team in MLS.

November 27th - MLS trading re-opens.

November 29th to December 9th - Schellas Hyndman heads to River Plate and then CAP.  He says he wants to make calls on trialists he has now before he goes on this trip.

November 30th - Contract option day. The decision will be made before this point and the information submitted to the league office.

December 11-14 - NCAA College Cup at Pizza Hut Park.

December 12-14 - Generation adidas team goes to London for three games.  Josh Lambo, Eric Avila, Anthony Wallace, and Bruno Guarda will be going.

December 14 thru January 31st - Sometime in this time frame (probably January) Eric Avila, Bruno Guarda, Blake Wagner, and possibly Break Shea (depending on his health) will go to CAP to train.
- Dax McCarty and Aaron Pitchkolan will go to Europe to train (teams TBD).
- Schellas Hyndman goes to Ghana to look at some young players.

December 31st - The last day of employ for the 2008 season for front office types and players.  Contracts expire at midnight.

January 1st to January 31st - Mid-season transfer window for Denmark, England, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.  This is important because MLS can still sign players on a free transfer beyond the end of this window as long as the player was free by the end of this window.  This is also when high priced talent will leave MLS; see Donovan, Landon.

January 1st to March 31st - Pre-season transfer window for Norway and Sweden. Norway being a chief rival for MLS core talent.  See Goodson, Clarence.

January 9-12 - MLS Combine, Lockhart Stadium, Ft Lauderdale, Florida.  3rd Degree will be attending it’s 5th MLS Combine.

January 14-18 - NSCAA Convention, St Louis, Missouri.  Hyndman and Ellinger sure to be heavily involved, as will, one would think, most of the FCD coaching staff including FCD Juniors and FCD Youth.

January 15th, 1:00 PM to 5:30 PM - MLS SuperDraft, NSCAA Convention, St Louis, Missouri.
- 3rd Degree 8th Annual Draft Day Chat Room will be up and running from the SuperDraft floor.

January 15 - April 15 - Primary MLS Transfer Window.

February 2nd - FC Dallas reconvenes in Dallas.  Entrance physicals, baseline mental status and fitness tests take place.

February 3rd - Two a days likely begin.

Mid to Late February - FCD goes to Florida to train.  (exact dates TBD)

Late Feb to Early March - FCD goes to CAP to train and play high level games. (exact dates TBD)

February 27th - MLS Roster Cut Down Day.  Teams must be roster compliant for 2009 season.  Usually this date is March 1, but since that’s a Sunday it should be Friday Feb 27 rather than the Monday the 2nd.

March 14th - CAP final season warm up at PHP (?).

March 19th - MLS 2009 regular season begins.

June 15 - August 15 - Secondary MLS transfer window.

I think you messed up the GA team, and US U-20 team dates. It should be November not December.

I messed up the U20s, but I think I got that Dec date from Schellas. I’ll try and confirm it.

“December 14 thru January 31st - Sometime in this time frame (probably January) Eric Avila, Bruno Guarda, Blake Wagner, and possibly Break Shea (depending on his health) will go to CAP to train.”
This is easily the highlight of the partnership with CAP. With their record of youth development, I’ve been hoping for this sort of thing since the relationship was announced.
Don’t get me long, I love me some Rocha, but having young FCD players train in Brazil is a huge opportunity for them, and, by extension, FCD. I really hope this becomes an every-offseason occurrence.

RexKramer and I plan on going to the SuperDraft so we’ll see you there. Hopefully, some other FC Dallas fans will be there as well.
