Cooper Starts and Scores for US

November 20th, 2008 . By: Buzz Carrick

In a strong performance that has finally officially tied him to the United States, FC Dallas forward Kenny Cooper started and scored a goal for the US against Guatemala in the match in this Semifinal Round of CONCACAF qualifying.  The US easily won Group 1 and now advances to the Final Round.  This was Cooper’s third cap but his first in a officially sanctioned FIFA match.

Cooper started the match up top next to Jozy Altidore.  Cooper notched the first goal of the match in the 54th minute off a great pass from Altidore. The Altidore/Cooper combination looked a solid one with Altidore playing the high role and Cooper, as he is want to do, playing in the more second striker position.

Freddy Adu scored the US’s second goal off a free kick in the 69th minute.

Kenny looked dangerous throughout. He was unlucky to hit the bar on a header, too. Hopefully he’ll warrant a look in a meaningful game next round.

That play was called offsides anyway. But Freddy, Kenny and Jozy on the field at the same time = bliss. Against GUA at least.

I don’t know what game people were watching…I was there and cooper was always out of position and gave the ball away far too often for a nat..took his goal nicely but other than that was not a factor..Jozy and Freddy were the two who shined last night…although cooper was poor besides his goal he should stay in the picture. after all the job of a forward is to score and he has shown he can do that well

What were you watching? Cooper did turn the ball over some. But he put himself in so many dangerous positions that it’s ok if he flubs a few. You can’t judge his performances by percentages when his work rate and shot totals are so damn high. By contrast, how often does Ching do anything that scares the opposition?

Way too harsh Hoopfan. Reeks of trollism.

I agree that ching has produced little lately with the nats..look im not sayin cooper is a bad player but he did not put himself in dangerous positions except the goal..he drifted out to the sidelines far too often and was in fact out of position more than he was in position as a striker. no need to get on me..just saying it wasnt his best game and wasnt great compared to jozy and freddy

def not a fan of ching nor johnson ..cooper is better than both already with more upside

Thought Goodson & Parkhursat formed a good partnership. Also though Ching showed why BB likes him; he can hold the ball, make runs and plays in the box. Guzan was stuck on his line but didn’t have much to do based on the first two I mentioned. Sasha was the MOTM over 90 minutes.
