FC Dallas Interested in Zé Roberto, Says Hyndman
October 8th, 2008 . By: Buzz CarrickIf you missed it this weekend, Zé Roberto, the 34 year old Brazilian superstar midfielder for Bayern Munich, says in the German press that he is leaving the club and wants to play two more years. He specifically mentioned FC Dallas and MLS as possible destination. FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman says there as been no official contact with the Brazilian, but the Red Stripes are certainly interested. “There’s nothing we are going to do now with just a few games left [in the regular season] but I think we need to explore it,” said Hyndman at training. “I think we will continue to stay close to it. If he’s good enough to play for them I think he’s good enough to play for us.” As for why a player the likes of Zé Roberto would be interested in coming to Dallas, the coach had a few theories. “One It may be how good our league is doing and two, maybe the recent player Denilson being here maybe just opened up opportunities for people to think Dallas. You know all the Brazilians, they follow each other and I imagine it’s a situation where it opened his eyes to the MLS and maybe out of all the teams David Beckham’s in LA and maybe he can be in Dallas.” While he says there has been no contract offer or official contact, Hyndman didn’t rule out something un-official he didn’t know about. But Zé Roberto’s apparent interest in coming here certainly has Dallas taking notice. “He’s a very good player, [but] there’s a lot of players we’d be interested in. The fact he’s verbally saying something about MLS and FCD, I think that’s important.” 20 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

wow…sounds good to me…but will he be worth a dp slot?
Hey Buzz, did you ask him about whether or not he thought Denilson showed up a year too soon (e.g., that he could have done better because of his knowing Portuguese)?
I think he would be - according to everything I’ve read, he’s still playing at a level high enough for the Bundesliga. My question is, where would he play? Sikora’s on the left, Rocha’s on the right, and Bruno (everyone’s favorite) has the attacking mid slot for now. Those positions seem set. Someone would have to move.
Would Schellas sit Bruno for Ze Roberto? My gut says yes, but it wouldn’t be an easy decision for him given how much he believes in Guarda.
Moose, no I didn’t cause IMO Denilson had nothing left. He had fallen out of top level soccer and was playing in the hinterlands and not scoring there.
ZeRo is still one of Bayern’s best players.
Eugene, Schellas will drop Bruno if he finds a better player. He’s already said so. Notice also Bruno getting pulled at the 60 minute mark the other day, that’s Schellas indicating he wasn’t doing what was asked. Yes, Schellas loves him some Bruno guarda, but he’s not married to him.
Buzz, I would have to disagree with you on that one, Denilson still has it on him. I was reading some news about the Brazilian League and he is playing for Palmeiras who is currently in 1st and last week he scored 1 goal and assisted on the other one. Their coach said Denilson is a big part of their team, his experiece and skills are able to change the tempo of the game…. SO, if he is playing there and making a difference he would for sure make a difference at Dallas if maybe we had a different coach…
For Ze, he still a top player, and SH would bench anyone for him, but I believe if he comes sikora wont be back
phil, I don’t believe Hyndman will let go of Sikora to play Ze Roberto. ZeRo also plays AM, just like Guarda, so I think we’ll see Bruno get subbed instead. Sikora just got signed and aside from the injury, he’s done no harm on the team, in fact I think he helps a lot more than lil’ Bruno. It would seem that Hyndman wishes for Sikora on the left, Rocha on the right, and ZeRo in the middle, in front of Pablo.
I wouldn’t worry about Sikora. It’s Bruno who should be worried, IMHO.
Over the last decade Denilson washed out of Real Betis, Flamengo, Bordeaux, Al-Nasr, and then FC Dallas as he got older and slwoer. He was never going to be able to handle the pace of MLS.
All you had to do was look on the field or any training session to see an old slow player who has lost it. Blake Wagner was taking the ball away from him in training at will. Denilson couldn’t beat a single player on the dribble. He remains one of the biggest busts in FCD and MLS history.
As for Brazil, in the League he has 3 goals in their 28 games, although I can’t tell how many he played.
All of which is a moot point since he’s gone and we’re talking about a new player in tip top form. He is highly unlikely to be in Dallas anyway.
I agree with Buzz - this could just be a negotiating ploy to get Bayern Munich to raise his salary in his next contract.
Also, even if Ze Roberto does want to go to Dallas, it’s tough to imagine FCD paying him somewhere between Beckham and Blanco money (which he’ll probably want). I know FCD is in the black, but are they willing to pay that much for a player who, in all honesty, wouldn’t increase attendance that much?
Buzz, you had me until “He is highly unlikely to be in Dallas anyway.” Huh? Why wouldn’t he want to come to Dallas? Columbus can find players WILLING to go there, surely we can too!
Eugene, I think if we put a winning team on the field the fans will come. Bring him in and pay him (along with KC) and see what happens. Can’t be any worse!
Cooper deserves our DP slot, especially since Roberto would only be interested in playing for two years
Denilson 7 goals in 9 games playiing midfield for the 1st place team. The right coach and team here could have had the best player in MLS. Look up Toja by comparison.
Denilson is on a play or don’t get paid deal, motivation enough for his fat ass I think. Ruiz should be on the same deal.
Agree with Eugene. The fact that Hyndman hasn’t heard anything sounds like the guy heard of a club that took a Brazilian in MLS, and he was name-dropping to get some extra cash from some team in a league that can pay him more.
Mike, Didn’t say he didn’t want to come here, just that the odds are long.
how much $$, HSG willingness to pay, is it just a ploy, will another MLS team make an offer, will Bayern, will some other club outside MLS see he is free and make an offer, does FCD have the cap room?
Long odds.
Ivan, not sure where you get 7 in 9. I can only find 3 in 28. No coach could have gotten Denilson to work IN MLS. This is not Brazil. Different league, different style. Just as he didn’t work in Spain or Qatar. He was so bad he ruined Toja last year.
besides who cares, the guy is long gone.
Denilson. Why are we talking about him. MOVE ON.
Sorry for starting up this monster of a thread guys. I just thought it might be interesting to ask the coach what he thought.
hey, I liked Denilson. He was a very nice guy. It was cool to have a Brazilian World Cup winner on our team. It’s just too bad that they had to, you know, actually play the guy on the field…. that kinda screwed things up.
My theory is that he just namedropped us because we and Bayern have nearly identical jerseys.
