2008 Season Grades

October 30th, 2008 . 9:41 am . By: Buzz Carrick

It’s time for the final report card on the 2008 season. As usual these grades are based on performance but also based on expectations. Otherwise every reserve would be an F, which would be silly. Sometimes things that are not the players fault will harm their grade, but adapting to the circumstances and overcoming adversity are part of what it takes to be great.

No. Player Grade Comment Homework
24 Eric Avila B+ It looked like he had won a starting spot and was well on his way to a high A grade until Bruno Guarda was signed. The coach thinks you have big upside.  Learn to play enough defense to get Guarda off the field.
30 Ray Burse Jr C The loan was a great idea to get PT, but after it ended Ray needed to challenge Sala and that didn’t happen. The time has come to beat out Dario Sala, or at the very least make it hard for him to keep his spot.  But it ain’t gonna be a gift, you gotta earn it.
33 Kenny Cooper A+ Tied for the franchise single season mark in goals scored.  What else can you ask of a forward.  Ok, maybe some assists, but that’s nit picking. Get paid, it ain’t going to be DP so you might have to live with something near $400.  Then work on decision making and passing, bring up those assists.
9 Jeff Cunningham A From non-playing malcontent in Toronto to key striker and partner to Cooper.  That’s some serious improvement. Relax and recharge, but stay fit and stay healthy.  It’s a long season when you’re 32.  Re-sign for something in the $100ks
27 Andrew Daniels C Zero minutes with the first team.  No visible progression nor challenge for PT. Work on defensive concentration and focus, see if that budget can handle developmental again and find a way to get better or the career will be over.
2 Michael Dello-Russo A Break through season, a year ago was a prime waiver candidate, now in the first 18. Work on crossing and passing to make a real charge at right back.  Get a step fast by training at the Michael Johnson Center.
4 Duilio Davino F Supposed to be the defensive keystone, instead looked way to slow for MLS.  Sometimes outplayed by a $30k backup. Take and massive pay cut or go home.
8 Burno Guarda C Quickly forced Avila out of lineup with defensive play, but is invisible in to many games. Figure out how to make an impact or the coach will replace you in the lineup this winter.  Yes, seriously.
22 Josh Lambo B Did what 3rd keepers do, played when he could and trained hard. One of the most intense and hard working keepers we’ve seen. Fast recovery from the horrific injury and no apparent mental set back. Keep doing what you’re doing and be patient.
13 Dax McCarty C Still struggling with the hernias but was sure starter and earned a Olympic spot under Morrow, then couldn’t get back on the field under Hyndman. Figure out what it is the new coach thinks is missing, otherwise pack bags for new MLS city.  And get that core strength up, that’s really slowing the development.
14 Drew Moor B- Got the new deal but just wasn’t quite as sharp this year, probably from having to play so many spots.  Too often having to cover for Davino makes Moor look out of position. Step up the leadership, take over as captain, and tell the coach what you think of the defensive partners on offer. Get meaner.
25 Dominic Oduro B Solid step forward by Oduro, but had a chance to lock down the starting spot with Cooper and couldn’t do it. Take another step in progress.  Dribble a ball at your feet 24/7 this winter. Study Cunningham and Watson, but not Cooper, for lessons on how to play high striker.
27 Aaron Pitchkolan A Proved that he could start in MLS and often outplayed a $400k defender. Sign a new contract, buy a Zagots’ guide for Seattle.  If by chance your stiff here, take Davino’s spot.
32 Jeff Rowland

Inc

Another season ending injury has probably killed the MLS career. Find a USL-1 team to play for.
19 Bobby Rhine B- The same leadership and locker room presence as always but contribution on the field fell to nothing under new coach. Enjoy retirement, hopefully doing TV work and coaching for FCD Jrs.  Or in the front office if that’s what you want.
6 Pablo Ricchetti B+ Impeccable second half showed what he is really capable of, to bad the first half was kinda blah.  If he had played like that all year would Morrow still be here? Decide if you want to stay here on current money, cause I doubt if FCD will give you the “promised” cash.  Think about playing center back at some point to lengthen career.
11 André Rocha A Impressive first season and persevered even when Hyndman was dropping the hammer.  Love the assists. Don’t pull a Toja.  Shoot more from range.  Maybe figure out how to play a diamond a-mid and work on that soccer brain.
44 Dario Sala B+ Really good year, top 1/3 of MLS keepers.  Hard to really complain about anything, it’s just not a superstar MVP year. Stay fit and healthy, Sala is much better when fit and healthy.  There is room in your game to even better. Sign a new deal, keep Burse on the bench.
5 Marcelo Saragosa B Went from a role player to a starter under Hyndman, although perhaps due to injury and suspension. Get that green card.  Work on the touch and playing with head up.
15 Adrian Serioux B Did quite well given how many position he had to play on defense.  Turned out to be the best option at right back. Better embrace right back cause Ricchetti is a lock.  You bring to much to the table at right back.
20 Brek Shea C Showed early promise under Morrow, got distracted by switching positions under Hyndman. Get healthy, embrace center back cause this coach isn’t going anywhere and he likes you there.
12 Victor Sikora Inc We hardly got to know him yet. Get healthy, get fit, show why you were signed.
29 Spencer Wadsworth C Midseason signing never really got to show much. Find a way to get some chances, and when the come do something with it.  If you’re spring is like this season your career will be over.
16 David Wagenfuhr D Is it his fault he’s hurt? No, but this is 3 years now he’s won the starting job and gotten hurt. Get well and move on with your life.  The brain is to important to risk.
23 Blake Wagner B- Finally locked down the starting left back job, even if it was by default. Work on that decision making, passing, and reduce the turnovers or the job will be gone faster than you can imagine.
26 Anthony Wallace C Never really took advantage of the times he got to play.  Captain of the U20s is nice, but it’s gotta show in the pro game. It’s time to do something, win a job or at least force some PT this spring or it will be time to move on to a new team.
31 Jamie Watson B Midseason pickup to play wide mid or even defense, instead played well enough to get back to the front line and move ahead of Oduro on charts by season end. Continue to outplay Oduro and work your tail off.  Keep head down and play hard.  Any chance you could grow 6 inches?
28 Chase Wileman B Had some nice performances in the reserves, but is there enough to translate it to the first team in the middle of the park? Think about playing pure wide midfield or fullback.  Consider the USL as a place to both play and get paid.

    way too many B’s.

Rocha, really? I saw the talent in the back half of the season which tells me the in the first half, he dogged it.

  2. Comment by seventhrowscreamer on October 30, 2008 10:17 AM

I was more impressed with Rocha’s first half of the season. He wasn’t playing like a Brazilian after SH got his hands on him.

  3. Comment by Rex Kramer on October 30, 2008 10:25 AM

pwip – what? Rocha finished as FCD’s assist leader with 8, 6 of those coming in the first 12 weeks. You appear to have a different definition of “dogging it’ to me.

“Josh Lambo – Fast recovery from the horrific injury and no apparent mental set back.”

This can’t be said enough. He’s still got work to do on his decision-making that can only come through gaining experience, but he’s clearly a mentally tough kid.

  5. Comment by pwip on October 30, 2008 10:36 AM

Rocha camped out in the 2nd 3rd of the field until SH arrived. Maybe you can correct me. Was he the AM/RM for most of his starts? He just sat back deep sending long balls into Coop. Not enough runs into the final 3rd. But ultimately, My memory of the 2009 FCD MF’s were they produced so many embarassing no pressure give-aways that got a coach fired.

Agree with you on Moor becoming meaner. Too many nice guys on the Dallas defense. I hate Houston’s defenders. Do they hate ours?

  7. Comment by peter on October 30, 2008 11:16 AM

Lots of high indiviual grade for a terrible team….where’s SH’s grade??? FFFFFFFFF

  8. Comment by peter on October 30, 2008 11:17 AM

Oh and the thought around the league on FCD is ‘they are soft’ and I can’t argue it ,can you?

  9. Comment by christian on October 30, 2008 11:20 AM

I think ‘get meaner’ can apply to our defensive side in general. Intimidation can be a major factor in the outcome of games. I wish more FCD players had Pablo’s mentality. He deserves to be captain next year…

you give sala too much praise, he needs to go gave up too many easy goals

  11. Comment by A Train on October 30, 2008 12:00 PM

Nice run down. May disagree here or there but genrally they seem good. Too many front ofice distractions this year – from contracts, to a losing streak, to Morrow tinkering with formations, to LA Beckham meltdowns, to Schellas coming….all too much.

  12. Comment by Ariel on October 30, 2008 12:11 PM

I think Pablo play better the first half of the season. More assist, more tackles, no red cards.. and probably we loss him for ‘09 because SM and MH promises

    Saragosa – B?
Saragosa – D should be more like it. The guy plays so sloppy and slow. Terrible player.

    man, stop drinkin the hate-r-ade

  15. Comment by Rich on October 30, 2008 1:52 PM

My only main disagreement is Sala. It seemed to me that after he came from injury, he became very hesitant to go out for corners and other free kicks from the outside. He seemed overly relaxed when the ball was in the FCD defensive 3rd and it cost the team several goals allowed. However, the last few games he seemed to be more aggressive in the 6.

I think what made him “look good” is his height and large frame. But for me, he had a long stretch of allowing too many soft goals.

    I’d give him a C.

  16. Comment by Harlan on October 30, 2008 9:09 PM

Rich, Sala “looked” bad because our D was always parting the red sea. From what I remember about this season Dario had a few goals you could put on him. Most of his goals were because he was having to cover up other players mistakes or the player would make a mistake and Dario could do nothing about it.

  17. Comment by achin on October 31, 2008 7:51 AM

i dont care that there is a captain on the defense, the true captain is the goalie when the ball is on our defensive 3rd, now if those players left him out to dry because they werent listening to him then its not sala’s fault but if its because he didn’t put them in the position he wanted then its his fault which i think it was a combination of both. I dont know how many times we were ahead and gave up a silly goal for the other team to tie becasue the defense had a mishap. but doesnt really matter now.

  18. Comment by Rich on October 31, 2008 8:09 AM

Harlan, that the FCD defense was lacking this season is no secret. And I’m fully aware of the add’l pressure that puts on the GK. However, defensive lapses aside, Sala gave up several goals in 2008 that he most likely would have stopped last year. I’m not talking about the “breakaway goals”, or the 1-1 goals. Those I can accept as defensive errors.

I’m talking about goals allowed from set plays (corners, free kicks). My observations are in reference to a change in his “style” of goalkeeping.

Also, when a ‘keeper knows there are problems with his defense (as Sala most certainly should have known), that’s when he has to cover for those issues. One way to do that is to be a bigger “presence” in the 18, and definitely in the 6. That’s where Sala failed, in my opinion. He became less aggressive, less sharp, less “aware” of what was happening when his “turf” was flooded with players from both sides.

Please don’t misunderstand me. I believe he started to get back to his 2007 form there at the end of 2008. And I hope he will continue to improve. I just don’t think he had a very good season.

Good job Buzz. Can’t say I disagree with anything.. but man.. tell me how you really feel about Davino ;-)

  20. Comment by G.I. Joe on November 2, 2008 9:11 PM

If Sala had been born in this country, you guys would be hailing him as the best goalkeeper in the league. FYI…our back line is that bad. I would argue that no other goalkeeper had to deal with more 1 v 1 situations than Dario Sala. I would also say that Sala is one of the best in the league 1 v 1. For those of us who know a thing or two about goalkeeping, the only thing right about the defense is Sala. For most of the year Sala was in the top 5 in the league for gaa. The guy reads the game beautifully and has single-handedly kept us in many games with a key save at the right moment. That’s what you want in a goalkeeper, and he has more than delivered. My friends on the inside know that a lot of other teams in the league have requested the services of Sala, so don’t be surprised if Sala ends up in a NYRB uniform or L.A. Galaxy jersey, but then again Lambo needs more time to learn from Sala and Burse has shown he just doesn’t have what it takes to be a starter in this league.

    So, for next year:

    Sala [Lambo]

    Serioux-Moor-Pitch-Wagner
    [Dello-Russo, Shea, Wallace]

    Rocha-Richetti-Avila-Sikora
    [McCarty, Saragosa]

    Cooper-Cunningham
    [Watson, Oduro]

Where is a new player needed most?

  22. Comment by achin on November 4, 2008 9:21 AM

im not saying i want the other guys behind him and i would be bashing him if he was from the u.s.. he kept us in some games but he also hurt us in other situations too.
